Here’s what’s coming in PlayStation 4 update 3.0

PS4

Neither of the new consoles has a particularly appealing, especially intuitive user interface – but each will continue to evolve and change as the platforms mature. The Xbox One is soon getting a new interface similar to the one seen in the Xbox App within Windows 10. The PlayStation 4, while not getting a complete UI overhaul just yet isn’t sitting stagnant either – with a new 3.0 update that’s currently in beta testing.

Those who’re in the beta program are busy playing with the new Firmware 3.0 right now. Here’s the official list of what changes its bringing (via Reddit):

Main features in version 3.00 beta update

  • (Events) has been added to the function items. All events associated with PlayStation are now brought together, enabling you to discover, participate in and watch these events in a centralised area.
  • (Communities) has been added to (Friends). (Communities) is a feature that enables you to find players who have similar tastes and interests. You can join an existing community or create your own community. You can also play games, join parties or talk about shared interests with members in the community.
  • You can now go to (Now Playing) to see what games or parties members of the community are enjoying right now. You can also easily start a game, join a party or send a request to watch a member’s gameplay in (Now Playing). You can access (Now Playing) from What’s New, (Friends), (Communities), the message screen in (Messages) or Profile.
  • The layout of the message screen in (Messages) has been improved. From the message screen, you can now select (Now Playing) or easily start a party. You can also add your favourite groups to [Favourite Groups] in (Friends).
  • You can now broadcast your gameplay on YouTube™.
  • You can now upload video clips to Twitter (10-second limitation).

Other features in version 3.00 beta

Share

  • The layout of (Live from PlayStation) has been improved. In addition to broadcasts, you can now view video clips and screenshots.

Settings

  • You can now change the speed for automatic text scrolling in (Settings) > [Accessibility] > [Auto-Scroll Speed].
  • [Community], [Requests to Watch Gameplay], [Events] and [Current Song] have been added to (Settings) > [Notifications] > [Display Pop-Up Notifications].

Other

  • You can now post your comments for activity feeds in What’s New.
  • You can now enjoy fun conversations with your Friends using (Stickers) in (Messages). (PlayStation®Plus) has been added to the function items. You can now see all of your PlayStation®Plus benefits, such as free monthly games, exclusive discounts, news and more, in one place.
  • Accessibility features are now available when playing content from Blu-ray Discs™ or DVDs. Application of these features has also been expanded. You can now restrict the use of games while looking at age level information and rating icons.
  • You can now create a sub account for a minor by selecting [New User] in the screen for selecting a user.
  • You can now adjust settings for Web filtering services from (Settings) > [Parental Controls]. You can use the service to block objectionable websites from being displayed in the Internet Browser. (Additional fees may apply for use of the service.)

The most interesting new feature, as far as I’m, concerned, is the Communities option, which allows you to categorise your friends into groups – like separating your list in to people who play Destiny, for example. Mostly so that you can avoid them. It’ll also be great for organising community play events, and finding people who play the same sorts of games you do. It seems it’s not too dissimilar from the “beacons” features that was made available late in the Xbox 360’s life – but frankly, the more features that the PSN nicks from Xbox Live the better.

The PlayStation4 will soon allow players to broadcast their gameplay directly to YouTube, instead of being bound to Twitch. That bodes better for local gamers who want to try their dab hands at broadcasting – which should work better on our low-upload connections than Twitch does. Users will also be able to upload 10-second long video clips to Twitter. There are also some welcome changes coming to the PS4’s frankly rubbish messaging system. Beyond that though, it doesn’t seem like it’s too drastic a change given its numbering.

Is there anything coming in Firmware 3.0 that has you excited?

I won’t lie, I’ve really enjoyed sharing screenshots on Twitter and I’m probably most excited for the 10 second clip upload. The Share feature really is one of the bigger features to emerge this generation.

It is, isn’t it? I just love being able to gross out my friends with all the MK X fatality screenshots I upload.

I would have loved to see a bit more of a link between my PS account and Facebook. I can upload all I want to Facebook, but would love to be able to tag friends.

Why? Because Facebook offers such a convenient platform for keeping in touch with family on the other side of the country?
Damn! Makes sense to hate it then!

Yeah, my facebook account does not exist. I do not like it.

BUT, I am becoming a bit estranged from my family. Maybe I should make one.

I reconnected with a cousin a few weeks ago. He is the most amazing down to earth person. So in that regard, I’ve been blessed.
But the other slightly insane cousin? No win there…

            Yeah, no good answer there.

My wife just ignores those that bother her. She is very active on mommy and cloth nappy groups (admin and stuff).. I think trouble will follow my getting a facebook thingy……

When did you get a PS4!? What’s your PSN ID? Try resetting your router or upgrade to at least a 2MB line and we can jam Rocket League together.

Absolutely nothing in this update has me excited. I barely have time for actually playing the games nevermind sharing what/how I’m playing and caring about other gamers out there.

But I’m an RPGer so loner by nature. The update is great for the gamers who do actually enjoy all this sharing stuff.

Wasn’t serious with the MP3s. But the fact that the PS3 and 360 COULD makes me irritated with the ‘newer, better console’. I mean come on, you can only play 1 format of movie and only from a USB stick? What year is this?!

I tried playing a standard AVI format the other day and it didn’t work. Have tried a few movies and none have worked (And yup, I have the update). These formats DO work on my 360 though…

Well apparently the PS4 only supports MP3 and M4A audio, and MP4 and 3GP. Who the fuck uses 3GP on anything these days I don’t know. It;s very strange that the 360, which is 8 year old tech CAN support more formats, which is why I get irritated.

            August 12, 2015 at 09:55

Share is great and everything but how come it uploads only to Facebook and YouTube and why is it so grainy after upload? It’s crystal clear while I’m editing it. Seems like a no-brainer that it should upload directly to playstation dash to be viewed by your playstation friends in the news feed in the same quality it was recorded. There the only ones who really care about some awesome thing I did in a game and I shouldn’t have to give them my Facebook or YouTube to view it. Just click and watch in the what’s new with your friends log
