The Division is (probably) getting a beta

The Division is quickly turning into Ubisoft’s second mythical unicorn. Despite the fact that we keep hearing about it, it’s been a long time since anyone outside the Private Alpha has actually seen the game running. Now that the game got pushed back to 2016, it could end up staying that way for a long time – unless Ubisoft follow through on their supposed beta plans.

Although not explicitly, formally announced, Ubisoft has alluded to a possible Division beta in the near future. That’s not all that surprising, considering nearly every single online title has a public beta at some point. When that beta might arrive, however, is a complete mystery.

Speaking during a Ubisoft earnings call earlier this week (the same one that announced the delay of the title), Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot allied to a public test being part of the game’s development roadmap.

“We want to make sure we have enough feedback from consumers from alpha and betas to polish it as much as possible before the launch. So that it comes to the market with the best experience possible.”

The game is currently in some form of a closed Alpha, and I suspect it’s going to stay that way for a while still. Public betas are used more for marketing than actual testing purposes most of the time – so don’t expect it months ahead of launch next year.

Unless Ubisoft pull an EA and announced one limited test straight after E3. One can hope, right?

  1. I’m getting the feeling that The Division is going to be Destiny in New York.

Look I’m all for the whole keeping it back to get the game better and more optimized but come on, surely they have some degree in time management to give a proper release date…… Also i found Hammersteyn while browsing the web…. He is the One.

I’ve heard the rumours of some games actually out of beta. Sounds crazy though.
