I’ve said this about a million times before, but why should that stop me from saying it again – I absolutely despise open combat in the Assassin’s Creed games. It’s boring and unsatisfying. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate claims to be changing that, but I wasn’t convinced when I played it at E3. Then again, I didn’t adopt a tantric approach, which might have brought me greater pleasure.
A new video has emerged showing that same E3 demo but deconstructed to show some new elements. Aside from violence against animals (who shoots a horse!?) there isn’t really too much that got my attention. However, there is a new approach to combat that’s a bit interesting.
That’s right, if you get close and then back off, you can do that a few times to create an incredible tantric combat flow. Okay, that might be overstating things a bit, but it does look cool to string together all those, ahem, finishers at once. Still, I’m just not convinced. I’m much more likely to use my daggers to lure people to their deaths under precarious loads – that sounds like some fun gameplay. Plus, I know the assassins in the game dress in the least stealthy way, but surely everyone prefers to just kill from the shadows and hide bodies in hay stacks (where they can now be removed if you so wish).
Okay, I know, not everyone likes to play the game the same way, but I’m going to continue to look forward to this game by totally ignoring the open combat. Even “incredible flows” can’t lure me out from the shadows.

So it’s all about getting in and getting out with quick thrusts of your sword? Seems you have limited ammo for your gun, so firing it early doesn’t seem like a good idea, lest you wanna wait an hour for it to reload.

In Black Flag you could equip up to 4 guns at a time; because reloading is too mainstream.

you could come back to kill guys in a cool combo later in the previous games aswell.
you could distract guys with tools and stones etc in previous games aswell.
you were rewarded for exploring, with beautifull views in previous games aswell.
why would you want to remove bodies from hiding places?
the only things relevant or new, in any way is shooting the horses and watching yourself die.
might buy the game, since unity eventually turned into something decent and playable.
but i will probably wait a bit. the delay on the PC release better be worth it.
and im not expecting anything revolutionary, or even to be any different to unity.
it will be the same game, with a few extra bells and whistles, in a different city.
and im ok with that.

You can’t leave bodies in hiding places dude. No one EVER looks in hiding places in those games. EVER. No matter HOW long you watch that hiding place for. And if you just leave the body there, it’ll decompose. Next thing you know, rats eating decomposing flesh. Then disease. Next thing you know you’re playing Dishonoured, not an AC game!

Are you telling me that when you killed a bandit on a horse in the Witcher 3 you didn’t secretly hope your attack would cleave the horse in twain as well?
I did. And it didn’t. And that just sort of.. made it feel a little less immersive.

Must say my biggest gripe with AC:Unity (apart from the plethora of bugs on hand!) was the combat – compared to previous iterations it, quite frankly, sucked! So bad I haven’t even finished it… Just can’t bring myself to complete the game. With AC:IV, when you were in a fight, if you got hit, it was because you messed up – you deserved to be hit. In Unity it felt more like a cr@p-shoot – press the button and see what happens (“place your bets!”). I truly hope they’ve fixed that aspect.
