Could Assassin’s Creed go steampunk?

Assassin’s Creed always puts a fun spin on particular periods in history. From Renaissance Italy to Revolutionary America and France, there’s plenty to work with in history. We already knew Assassin’s Creed Victory/Syndicate would be taking place in Victorian England. However, this announcement teaser could make the franchise even more awesome.

Here is the teaser for the new Assassin’s Creed that will be officially revealed 12 May:

Notice anything funny about the hidden blade? That valve and mixture of metal and leather looks distinctly steampunk to me. I doubt that they would put that big a twist on actual history, but we could see some cool devices at the new assassin’s disposal. Could we see Alexander Graham Bell or Michael Faraday as the companion inventor this time around? Perhaps some inventions that didn’t survive through history could give a slightly steampunk vibe to the game without drastically changing the reality of historical inventions of the period.

While Assassin’s Creed has traditionally exposed some cool interpretations of real historical events and characters, I think the franchise could do well with a bit more fiction mixed in, particularly when it comes to inventions. They managed it with Da Vinci and it was part of what made the second instalment in the franchise such fun. Perhaps they could do it again in a more modern context with fun results.

We will all know more in a few days. I know many have lost interest in Assassin’s Creed, especially after the failed launch of Unity. I wish I could say that I’m totally skeptical and disinterested, but I’m honestly excited to hear about this new title. It may be a flawed experience, but I still really do enjoy Assassin’s Creed games and look forward to the newest offering. The hype train hasn’t even left the station and I’m already resigned to buying my ticket.

Sure why not, it worked pretty well for Dishonored so lets try that. I’ll buy it as soon as they do a FC4 complete edition in a year or two.

While I would love steampunk added to the AC formula, it makes absolutely ZERO sense within the game’s established fiction.

True, but at this point no one cares or truly even understands what the established fiction is.

I’d buy that. Steampunk? Hell. Yes.

Steampunk is the reason I’m interested in Bloodborne and a PS4. Literally, the only reason. So AC with Steampunk is just pure win.

I’d love to see something like that, but I am afraid that the series is all too serious for a steampunk vibe, the realism factor has always been an AC tribute…

Omd it’d be soo cool, but i don’t think they’ll even do that cause the games are always based on real historic events. Ubisoft can do something on the same engine in steampunk setting, but once again, i don’t think it’ll happen anytime soon. Otherwise we’d know about it.

Computer games, teaching me history since Age of Empires.

I honestly learnt more history from playing the AoE series than I did through 12 years of school.

    loving the new colour scheme.
that black and gold is super edgy.

AC rogues outfit design felt too clunky, AC unities felt too sporty.
this one looks pretty badass sofar though.
