Emotionless

It’s so seldom that games are able to elicit any sort of emotional response from me at the moment Maybe I’m turning in to a soulless, miserable robot. Mayhaps that’s the fault of the AAA game space – which is, admittedly, where most of my gaming happens. But where games regularly used to make me cry, or smile, or revel in awe at some great big “holy hell” moment – I find it happening less frequently.

And I’ll be honest – I’m trying, but I’m struggling to remember the last game that left me with a giant goofy grin plastered all over my face, or the last game that had me wondering where the onion-cutting ninja was hiding. Was it perhaps the whimsical charm of Kirby Triple Deluxe that last left me giggling? Maybe Mario Kart 8? Perhaps it was Brothers: a Tale of Two Son – or my perennial favourite, a game I can’t stop loving, Fire Emblem: Awakening?

I don’t really know. Maybe I’m becoming cold and callous miserable old bastard, but those moments aren’t as prevalent, and that’s despite – or perhaps because of – me playing so many more games now. IS it just me, am I becoming an emotionless drone?

Tell us though! What were the last games you played that actually made you feel something? Y’know, other than rage and hatred because of uPlay or whatever.

I picked up the Deponia series over the Steam December Holiday special. The ending to that series…boom, right in the feels.

In general, it depends how attached and immersed I am in the game. Sometimes there is a connection to the character other times its just a collections of pixels I control.

I really enjoyed it. Its a good point and click adventure. Similar to Monkey Island with respect to the comedy and puzzles. I didn’t think I would get so into it but I did and it was awesome.

Well I played the demo and loved it, then bought the first one. I’ll wait until I’ve finished the first before I buy the other 2, but I am keen. Really really keen. My early gaming days had a lot of Monkey Island in them, and Deponia definitely felt like a lot of that.

Save at the start of every mission. Turn on Save Scum if you’re feeling up for a challenge. Worth diving back though, Enemy Within adds so much more to the base game.

I finished that mission thanks to 2 snipers with godly luck.
50% hit chance and they make 2 of the 3 shots.
I cried tears of happiness and then the game ended and my sniper gave her life to save humanity.
        I was saddened.
She had been one of my original squad members and had made it all the way through the game.

The last game to really bring me to tears was Ni No Kuni and Last of Us. As much as different opinions get thrown at TLOU, dat game brings out some raw emotions doe. I’ve never played a game that tugs at my heart in the first 15 minutes. In recent memory, Life is Strange has been a surreal experience, its a bit hard to describe though but it is a very REAL game at times that brings about a number of emotions.

First experience with night-time was awesome. I shat my pants and drooled all over my preppy tie, the adrenaline I fooled my brain in to producing was simply orgasmic.Haven’t felt anything like that in ages.

The balance between reward and risk/effort is definitely well-balanced (unlike DA:I). Successful immersive experiences will always have a “form follows function” design. When devs and pubs realize this my hobby can truly shine.

I’ve gotten more emotion out of indie & smaller publisher titles lately than the big AAAs.

Stanley Parable made me laugh my arse off, A Story About My Uncle had a serious onion-cutting ending for me that made the whole game worthwhile, Contrast had a really sweet story full of AWWWW moments, Mars: War Logs had really well-written companion chars I actually felt something for.

Never forget Spec Ops: The Line or The Walking Dead. Those are feels machines.

If you have a real story with real characters I’ll probably feel something. Seems sometimes like many AAAs are afraid to do that because emotion can admittedly be tricky and they want to cater to everyone, including people who just want to shoot people in the face, thus making them come across as bland.

I just need to stick to one character and not keep creating a new character to try out a different build.

I finished Shadowrun Returns and now I am wanting to play Dragonfall. I am trying to wait for a sale, but I can just see myself buying it full price cause I can’t wait anymore.

I am DAMN impressed by all the addon campaigns and I am thinking I will be busy with that for a while. The only reason Dragonfall might get me is, because a lot of the addons need it to run properly. My wallet is going to feel the hurt!

Boishock received a massive shit storm for its ending. It was the first game where the director Ken had to explain to the player that the last hour of gameplay was the ending.

It took us awhile to compute. But as for Infinite? that was fantastic.

Could it be that as we age and get used to how the media influences us, our own emotional reactions get used up. Your emotion reserve is finished.

At least that’s what is happening with me, I rarely really enjoy a game with a campaign any more. Only thing that still makes me react are multiplayer games like Insurgency, which makes me laugh and rage quite quite a bit.

ME1 when I became a Spectre for the first time hit a chord with me, since I actually always wanted to go to the army and become spec-ops. Then when I had to choose between Kaiden and Ashley…I had started “investing” in Ashley for the Romance, but I wanted to play my character as properly “authentic” soldier boy. I was a soldier, she was a soldier, Alenko was something else that was “more needed” by the team. I paused for 30 minutes while weighing all the options and then left “my love” to die “for the greater good”. Needless to say I killed Alenko in ME3 🙂

I must say, Saints Row IV: Re-elected left me with a huge grin on my face on more than 1 occasion! Between the super powers, the funny weapons and costumes, really diverse side-quests (I mean, 1 of them was an 8-bit side-scroller beat-em-up!! How awesome is that?!) and the humour thrown in for good measure, it was a really fun experience! It’s been a while since I’ve felt that much pure fun in a game…

On the ‘whose cutting onions’ front, I must say The Walking Dead… Played both Season 1 and 2 in December… And man, there were some strong onions in the air on those days!! That game is just so full of feels!!!

My holly shit moment that i could remember, Mass Effect 1, 1st time i saw Sovereign on Eden Prime, and the thresher maw that took down the reaper on Mass Effect 3, Dues Ex:HR was a game that had me grinning, DA:I gave me a good RPG fix and had me glued, Starpoint Gemini 2 was an amazing space sim that i just needed, got a little Freelancer nostalgia but i’m with Geoff, its less and less that i enjoy a game, i even find my self less interested to finish a title i started with, if i don’t enjoy the game i find it pointless to finish it.

When they first released Arena Commander for Star Citizen I took my 300i out for a spin just to see what it looked like. It was cool. Took a couple of minutes to figure out how it handled, then I was happily flying around dodging asteroids. Not actually doing anything, just flying around aimlessly. Which is something I hardly ever do because I prefer having some kind of goal to move towards when I play a game.

Getting back in the cockpit is something I’m really looking forward to.

Ending of Walking Dead Season 1. There was a bit in Walking Dead Season 2 that had me crying like a girl. The ending of that cell shaded Prince of Persia game. Shadow of the Colossus. Spec Ops: The Line(the last two really made me feel like a bad guy though). Bioshock: Infinite and the DLC pt 2(the lobotomy bit got me feeling so sick actually). For some reason Limbo was also really satisfying at the end.
