It’s Friday the 13th, and many – because of superstitious twaddle – find the day unlucky. While I don’t go in for that sort of nonsense, I do revel in people’s tales of bad luck.
I’ll tell you something that’s happened to me twice; updating a product’s firmware only to have the power cut out. The tech savvy amongst you will know that this can very much mean the death of a product, and for me, it did.
It was actually back in the before times, when manufacturers actually gimped their hardware to sell off for a cheaper price. I was modifying a standard Nvidia GTX 6800 – not exactly a cheap card – in to a 6800 Ultra. It would have increased the performance rather significantly; had the power not tripped mid-flash, rendering the card a very odd-looking doorstop. It’s something that happened again with my motherboard – but I was lucky enough to find a way to flash its bios anew.
I know even console users can have bad luck. Friends have gone through consoles like they’re expendable; with one already on his third Xbox One; the first two were faulty, right out of the box. There are even less extreme bits of bad luck, but bad luck nonetheless. Have you taken a day off work to play the latest game, only to find the servers down, you’re the delivery guy driving past your house? Did you buy a PSP Go?

Had a desktop power supply short and completely fry everything inside, but nothing beats my Xbox One woes.
Import the Xbox One (because I’m too damn impatient), only to completely destroy the power supply because I tossed two years of engineering out the window and forgot to properly step down the voltage from our power outlets. Burnt plastic and a few tears later, and I had no Xbox One for a few weeks.
I am an idiot on a good day.

That’s not not noob, I bought the FX card when it first came out……I had three red rings of death…I have had about 6 hard drive failures, Two motherboards go. I have a very expensive 8800 fry from overheating, I had another Nvidia card blow the day I bought it. Multiple PS3 controllers stop working and the week I got my Xbox one, I stopped working. That’s noob…. And to add to all that, I almost got struck by lightning….Luckily it only fried our tv and made the picture a wonderful green, This was long before flat-screen Tv’s. And now, My friggen rubber is persihed on my PS4.

I own a 2002 Hummer H1, and while it is not the best on gas mileage, it is great at reeling in the pussy. I mean, all I have to do is drive up onto someones front lawn, honk the horn, and pussy literally jumps into my passenger seat. I haven’t paid for sex since I bought my Hummer. Oh man. That graphics card feeling. I had the exact same issue thing happen to my gfx card.
I had a 4800Ti and in those days you could update firmware with Leadtech (Winfast) cards. There was an update that apparently helped fix one or two oddities with the card so I downloaded it and started the flash. It failed halfway through thanks to a power trip and well… I had the best gfx card on the market at the time sitting in my PC and it was completely bricked. To this day I still feel the pain of that loss.

PCIE controller died on my motherboard, I miss timed my buy I bought a socket 939 that was replaced less than a year later with Socket AM2.
With no 939 MB available it meant new CPU, new RAM and replaced the ATi Radeon (at that stage already replaced twice under warranty)as well since it was probably the cause of the pain.

I was happily cleaning out my PC, unclipped the CPU heatsink to get all the dust off it, and when I picked it up the CPU came with it without the locking bar released because the heat paste had set like concrete. Mobo fucked.
Otherwise recently I’ve had every man, dog and alien hunting me down in Warframe for the last two weeks, practically every damn day. To the point where when the screen flashes I just sigh & think “not again”.

hardware nightmare stories, got a few of those myself, i feel your pain.
with my first pc, i was cleaning it and when i was cleaning the graphics card a bit too thouroughly, i found this icky paste under the fan, decided to clean it all off.
when i turned my pc back on, i could smell the graphics card burning, because as it turns out, the icky paste between the fan and the chip actually serves a purpose.
also, with my second pc, again, cleaning etc, i managed to someone shove one of my RAM sticks into the slot upside down.
turned it on, saw a spark and a bit of smoke: motherboard, ram, cpu, psu and graphics card all dead.

I had a mobo with a dodgy BIOS chip that used to get corrupted every so often & cause my PC not to boot, & couldn’t afford to replace it. Luckily my mate had a PC with the same mobo at his work, so we used to go in there on the weekend, boot that PC up, then hot-swop the BIOS chip & reflash it. That was always nerve-wracking.

Finish a difficult battle in Prototype only for there to be a glitch in the game and I couldn’t move on to the next section, had to start the section over…

(actually i do, my first dragon kill in dragon age inquisition was nullified after a 30 minute fight, the dragon got to zero HP and didnt die, it just stood there without dying.)

This wasn’t my bad luck but a friends’. He JUST got a new pc the previous day and told me to come visit to check it out. We were like 10. All excited he turned the PC on and it made that “pzhhhhng” sound as it powers up and then “pwoosh!” gone. Everything dead! Was the most I laughed to this day.

I got a new external drive. Backed up my entire music, movies, anime and programs onto it. The next morning, my son knocks it over. Hard Drive gone. All that Data gone. Before you ask, THAT was my backup.

I remember playing Dark Souls (cannot remember if it was 1 or 2). Man I had over 200 hours on the game and my save file got corrupted… Damn, oh no wait, that was not me…. ;P

I remember playing Hearthstone, man I was doing an arena run, got Edwin van Cleef even. Played a shit load of cards and summoned him at 30/30. This was going to be hectic, O shot kill. Just for it to be destroyed by a 3 mana monster with the effect of kill a monster with atk of 7 or more… Oh shit, wait that was not me either…

I tried to log with offline mode and it told me that this mode is not available offline, but that’s about it.

Play it on one day, save games are six months old. So play a bit from there, but ok.
Day 2, save games from last week, middle of HOS, so played from there.
Day 3: old saves.
Day 4: delete all saves.

Also, JRPG (Names escapes me). Played till 2nd disk and then came to fight and could not win. Internet search reveals if main char not super specialised by then, this fight is hard as hell. Problem was all the fights leading up to that, including boss fights, I won on max two tries. Unlucky or bad game balance?

Last year I stayed in a house and befriended a new guy who moved in and wanted to go to the gym and I trained him and in turn he let me spend endless hours playing Dragon Age 2 (YES I ENJOYED IT) and some other games on his xbox 360. As the year came to a close he decided to get an Xbox ONE and told me to pre-order Dragon Age: Inquisition which I did. a week later both of us get job offers in different cities and my days of gaming came to another halt. Needless to say, that Friday the week before the launch and day I would pick my game up, I had to go and cancel the order.

So I have a nice ASUS Transformer Prime paperweight… All I wanted was a lollipop. (It needs a board replacement as far as I understand. All the flashes that I could find on forums that did work used Win7, I’m on 8. Will try a VM sometime)
On the other hand, lightning and insurance gave a cheap small upgrade a few years back 🙂

Played Lost Planet 1 on XB360 for 4 hours, saved and exited.
Put the game on 10min later…….no saved file.I stared at the TV….put the console off and walked away.
I haven’t touched the game since..sigh,I suppose I’ll have to someday.After I finish Red Dead Redemption (*^_^*)
