geeky

rAge is coming up next week, and it stands for the Really Awesome Gaming Expo, or Really Awesome Geeky Expo, depending on who you ask and which part of the country you’re from. And it makes a lot of sense, really.

Gaming is an inextricable part of Geek culture, along with a plethora of other cultures and subcultures that overlap, intertwine and converge, producing a venn diagram that looks like it was created using a spirograph.

That doesn’t, of course, mean that if you’re automatically in to gaming (as I assume most of you are, being here and reading this) that you’re in to other bits of geek culture. As many of you know, there’s a rather big bit of geek culture that I honestly struggle to identify with; Anime. I’ve tried to get in to it, and I just can’t, but I also just don’t really see the appeal of games like Warhammer, most boardgames, trading card games, cosplay and much of the other stuff people assume I like because I happen to enjoy video games.

I don’t really like comics, I don’t like super heroes very much – and I don’t really enjoy their associated movies. I don’t go in much for collectible figures, I think both Star Wars and Star Trek are rubbish and I think that Doctor Who is a load of guff. I’ve been known to enjoy a bit of reading and a spot of science, and I have unrivalled technolust for gadgetry, allowing me to retain some semblance of geek cred.

But that’s me! What bits of geek culture are you just unable to identify with? Do you even consider yourself a geek?

      Doctor Who is awesome.
And although I’ve only watched a few anime’s, I found them to be very homourus and serious at the same time. More so than many other series can manage.

For me….Give me a combustible, a beer and a good game or anime series and I’m sorted……..and Oh Larping can also take a hike.

If the books seem too big to get into, just try the games. It should get you the VERY broad idea of the scope and story. Which is still great.

The South African Anime fans are really a bit of a minority. Due to the fact that people who don’t know anime only focus on hentai/ecchi that they see the rest of society pointing at, and then brand that as “Anime”. When yo actually reach out and ask a proper anime fan for a recommendation, you will most likely always get an awesome series and not some “soft porn drawings” that most people tend to link Anime with.

I think Anime is an acquired taste if I may be so bold. People see cartoons and they think Disney fluff/happy thoughts / warms and fuzzies.
Then they watch it, and find there is more to it. What that something is I do not know yet. Maybe you should not watch it with a “Western Mindset” if you follow me?

The problem is that to most western people, anime is Dragonball Z and Pokemon. Which are terrible examples. There is anime for everyone, the type that you’de like is just harder to find.

    I must admit I do most geek/nerd things…

    Comics/graphic novels
    Anime
    Animated series
    Games
    Some more games
    Reading books
    Actively watch eSports
DC animated movies. Yes these get their own category, because of the pure awesome.
    Own a Nintendo console
Spend more money on my PC than on anything else.

I feel like there is more… xD

    Edit:

    I forgot about:
    Dungeons and Dragons
Magic the Gathering (although only on PC lately due to how insanely expensive it is)

Well, if you compare what he was doing in the 70s with everything else other people were doing I would say that the Millennium Falcon kind of betters a carboard box with tinfoil windows. Sure, he did have a lucky break, but the quality of the visuals speak for themselves.

I was exaggerating for effect, a bit. 😉 Before people get too upset, I do like Star Wars.

It’s more about his storytelling – as anyone who’s watched the original trilogy & the new trilogy should agree.

Most peeps forget the fact that the entire Star Wars universe was spawned from a bedtime story he made up for his kids. Personally I thought his creativity and vision was amazing.

As for me? Fuckin’ Dr Who. I have no issue with it, nor that people like it, but it’s bizarre to see it be dragged into meme status and inserted in various conversation orifices.

Also, large swathes of the anime community I simply don’t get, or just make me uncomfortable and/or irritable. And I say this as an anime fan, and someone who’s been sumberged in the culture at various levels for a looooong time. Guess I’m just grumpyfan.

I watched the really old Doctor Who when I was a kid. So if you’ve only watched the new ones it does seem very bizarre. I agree with you on that. I enjoy it for the nostalgia value it has for me, because it hasn’t changed much over the years (a good and a bad thing). The really old ones are still the best though.

torchwood, spin-off of Dr Who. Discussed with some friends on Wednesday night. Really simple. It is, in a lot of ways, bad. Bad scripts, clichéd characters, some really poor effects sometimes. But it is fun, just pure fun. Somehow.

I don’t identify with the fandom & obsession that seems to permeate so much of geek culture, which is why I don’t consider myself a geek because that seems like a prerequisite to me. Other people enjoy that, but not me.

I like a lot of geeky stuff. I’ve got a reasonably broad knowledge base that I’ve picked up over the years, but it’s also pretty shallow. I just don’t care enough to learn the details because… why? It’s fiction and basically just for my entertainment.

Comics – DC, Marvel, Image…everythign, but don’t read as much as i’d like because there’s just too much. I binge when i can.
    Fantasy novels
Guitar (does this count as a geek culture?)

    I’ve tried most other things.
    – MTG can GITFS – awesome game but too damn expensive and i simply don’t love it enough to spend that much money/time
    – Never tried Warhammer ( again, expensive and patience… i don’t see the point of spending R200 for a teeny little figuring, then still have to paint it)
    – I have a passing interest in Anime. Watched a few good ones, but found too many to be utterly boring or stupid to consider myself a fan.

I like anime. I like how they tell the stories in anime. I’m not such a fan that I know and watch every anime out there. Those types of people I like to “borrow” anime from or find out what’s good.

Collectibles. Mint condition dolls in boxes that’s never been opened. That’s not me. I have never been interested in that.

Fandom. Where you know all the stories and characters. I have watched Game of Thrones but the way you talking about Game of Thrones, I don’t know what I’ve been watching. So fandom, not my thing.

Cosplay. Play dress up. Ya, no.

I like video games because of how it’s evolved and still continuing to evolve since pong. Although video games has stagnated these last few years. Thank you 8 year console fucking cycle.

Strongly believe there’s always been a distinction between Nerd and Geek

Geek is basically what you’re describing yourself as above…
Nerd is the one that does enjoy anime, board games, general SCI-FI, cosplay, etc.

Nothing wrong with either of them, as they overlap and intertwine so much ( boils down to the same sub-culture, but the interests in both corners differ )

I describe a Nerd as someone who knows far more than they should on a ‘niche’ subject. More than the average person would ever know. Nerds can be found in every interest out there.

Great example of this is Trekkies. Those guys and girls go all out for Star Trek. They know far more than I ever could, and I’m a fan of Star Trek (I’ve watched all of it, multiple times). But I’m not interested in learning Klingon, or finding out the exact dimensions of the Enterprise.

That, is some nerdy shit right there.

I have almost no knowledge of DC or Marvel (Batman aside) and do not care. I have friends that know a lot and is fun to listen to them, but yeah, not for me.

Star Trek, Star Wars and various (read many) Sci-fi books, series and so forth, all me,me and me. Love it.

I am a bit of a left handed monkey wrench, I suppose, but I have many interests, Soccer, Tennis, community activities, making my parents in law happy, pissing off my parents in law, yeah all of that.

Comics and figurines mostly. Don’t get it. I mean, yeah they’re nice to look at, but why? Comics are just really, really, really bad literature. Picture books for kids are pretty much more entertaining. I like the live-action movies around comic-book heroes, but that’s because I get to sit back and enjoy an hour or 2 of visual porn. It’s certainly not because “OMG BATMAN”.

I don’t really enjoy Star Wars, although the games are usually fun to play. Board games tend to be too much of a chore and trading card games are too much strategy-involved for me. I’ve seen an episode or two from Doctor Who and thought it was very ‘meh’, but I will be willing to watch more to change my opinion. I love watching anime, and can recommend quite a few that will blow your mind and isn’t nsfw. But one thing I absolutely can’t stand is Big bang theory.

Some parts I have no opinion on, whereas others I have no love for – like My Little Pony, trading card games, board games and most comics. I guess, I’m just an average Joe really. Haha.
I don’t often drink beer, but when I do get it’s usually from CBC or Devil’s Peak Brewery, or one of those. The smaller craft beer companies make such tasty beers.

Devil’s Peak Brewery, a few people love them.

Enjoy. I drink, perhaps, 10 tots of Scotch a year. That is it. Nothing else.

Indeed. And I drink so little, I get a good one when I do drink.

If Beer o’clock wasn’t in an hour I’d hate you so much right now. Mostly from jealousy, and only a slight bit because FUUUUUUUUUUUUU.

This is what I look like when I’m out shopping with my wife and she gives me four hangers of clothing to hold.

If I had all the time in the world I’d probably like to be involved in most “geek” things. They’re generally way more interesting than the usual fluff on tv etc. Unfortunately, if I can’t invest enough time into something I get frustrated so I limit my geeky pursuits to video games, board games and the occasional anime series.

I got into comics for a bit but the sheer volume of content out there was overwhelming so I gave it up. I stick to reading sci-fi novels these days.

Anime, Nintendo, Phones, Mac computers and the hipster culture that comes with it, War hammer games. Season Passes. Some Japanese games. Especially Final Fantasy.

Most probably you’re watching the wrong anime. Many does suck. Try my favorites:

    1. Hikaru no go
    2. Initial D
    3. Hajime no ippo

If I define a geek, it will be:

    1. above average intelligence in math and science
    2. above average analytical skills
    3. interested in technical stuff
    4. likes high end devices and PCs
    5. likes gaming
    6. likes comics (japanese, korean, or western)
    7. likes anime
    8. a little bit shy but horny 🙂

I wouldnt say liking star wars or star trek since i personally know some geek guys who doesnt like them that much. I myself cant get over the fact that a jedi with lightsaber can block so many incoming lasers considering that it is travelling at the speed of light.

Superman was ruined by the first movie. Imagine having the power to turn back time? Every time superman makes a mistake then he should just turn back time.
