It’s not feasible, as far as money and time go, to love and play all games. There are also games and genres that, try as you might, you’re just unable to fathom, or become proficient at. I understand that. I, for example, just don’t get MOBAs. I try, but I just don’t see the appeal. I really wish I did though; looking through my steam lists, I see friends pouring hundreds of hours in to things like DOTA, and I really wish I could be part of that.
I just don’t get it though. When I’ve tried the genre, it just grates; I don’t enjoy the mechanics, I don’t enjoy the competitiveness of it all and I’d rather then run off and play something else. Or cry. It’s much the same with games like Total War. I love history, and I love the idea of controlling massive armies – but I just can’t bring myself to actually enjoying the games. Same goes for Monster Hunter. When it sells a bajillion copies in Japan, it has to be doing something right. Why can’t I find what that right is and enjoy the games myself?
I’m sure you all must have that genre or game that you sit watching from the other side of the window, wishing you could appreciate or enjoy as its fan base goes mental. Tell us: Which games or genres do you just wish you could love?

This topic is a bit irrelevant for me. I just love great games. Any genre, any age, any graphic style. I have fond memories from every genre (actually including racing games, which sadly falls under SPERTZZZZ).

Real Time Strategy (RTS) games. I mean, who does not want to play with Jenny McCarthy? Alas. My mind went “WHUUUTTT????” when I tried building a base and attacking a lone enemy soldier that came wandering up to my base’s gates at the same time…

RTS < TBS in most cases for me.
Captain JJ Saga
January 16, 2015 at 10:55
I’m a bit on the fence with that one tbh.
I love investing in building a nice big base in RTS games, setting up formations and defenses and attack strategies. And of course watching the chaos of a big battle.
But in TBS games I love micromanaging, proper planning and expansion. I also tend to spend approx 1-4 hours per RTS game and 8-10 hours per TBS game. So I guess it’s all about what I’m in the mood for at that moment.

No. The idea behind it is awesome: Mine ore to get funds. Build a base. Train troops. ATTACCKKKK!!!

You realise that baiting a response is about the same as talking to yourself.
Also, you, in co-op? OOOOH. You’re that guy who turns friendly fire ON. 😛

Pure FPS games for me. I just don’t enjoy them. I like the RPG FPS games, but games like COD. Not for me. Then again I enjoy Total War, Civilization and Paradox games.

I Love how Paradox Games are essentially they’re Own genre….

January 16, 2015 at 11:27
I have spent far too much time playing those grand strategy/paradox games. I don’t get as much time as I would like to play games that require my full time focus, but with grand strategy/4x games I can do other stuff/chores/work while playing it.

Reid
January 16, 2015 at 11:33
That’s the game I’m currently hooked on. The 1st time I tried it I got put off by the amount of stuff to learn and just uninstalled, but last month I gave it another try and now I can’t stop. During the steam sales I bought all the DLC, 1st time I actually did that.

I also have that game, but want to get further into Crusader Kings 2 1st. It has a save game exporter/importer for EU IV. So your progress in the one games gets transferred over to the next.

Nintendo has to be one of the most infuriating games companies around. They’re like your own child who you know has so much promise and potential but all they do is pick their nose, smear it on the wall and clap stupidly.

Generally there is very little I don’t like. I play everything and anything and am fortunate I am not too hemmed into a genre. I have yet to play a MOBA only because I don’t do PC gaming. But maybe something like Smite will be great as it is on console. So will give that a go.

Co-op game modes. So boring for me, where’s the fun in outsmarting the AI with humans? SP is fine, then I don’t see it as strategy really, more like just fucking around. Not all co-op is bad though, actually want to try FC4, that could be fun.

cant stand MOBA’s (dota, league of legends, etc) it seems to be a watered down version of Warcraft arena PVP or am I missing something?
Lardus-Resident Perve
January 16, 2015 at 12:24
I wish I liked MOBA more. My problem with it is the community – when my friends and I used to play together for fun over LAN (either 3v3 or 5vAI) it was quite fun. Online? Not a chance.
I can say one other thing though – I wish I didn’t like WoW at all. I enjoyed being able to do my own thing most of the time, but would love it more if I could play without certain morons standing in the damn flames, not protecting the healers, and then complaining about my DPS while I run around avoiding killy stuff and protecting the healer who was running out of Mana the whole time because he tried to keep the a-holes alive…that is the NR 1 reason I don’t play anymore. But darn it I am so tempted!

Skyrim, I play for about a week then get bored of it. Couple of weeks later I create a new character because I “can’t remember my old class so well” or “sword/shield is boring” then I play for a week or two and quit again QQ
