Sometimes, we end up doing things we don’t want to – like being nice to Darryn (it was an accident, and it only happened once). And sometimes, games make you do things that make you feel uneasy, or that you feel is morally questionable.

It’s not really been a problem for me. Whenever games offer some sort of clear moral choice, I’m inevitably on the side of lawful good – but it’s where the choices are a little greyer than black-and-white, or when they’re forced on you that things can take a turn for the uncomfortable.

An obvious one then, is that scene in Spec Ops: The Line, where you start to realise that you may, in fact, be a bit of a monster – but it’s something that also happened to me in GTA IV. That game was dark and gritty, and at the time, oddly realistic..and when I had to shoot an old lady in the head with a sniper rifle, I felt a little queasy. It’s something that oddly didn’t happen in GTA V much, thanks to its brighter colours and cartoonier (Totally a word!) violence, though that torture scene wasn’t pleasant.

I almost, almost felt bad with the wholesale slaughtering of wildlife in games like Far Cry and Read Dead Redemption too – but hey, poppa needed a new wallet, so skinning four highly endangered digital animals was a necessary evil.

It’s irrational, I suppose, because games are digital entertainment, and aren’t real – but as they inch ever towards realism, I’m finding that they make me feel all out-of-sorts and uncomfortable. But what about you folk? Have you ever played a game and encountered something that made you question you’re your moral fibre? Has a game made you introspective and think “Am I happy to be doing this?”

Or are you like Darryn? A digital monster, who’s happy to kick puppies, eat kittens and burn babies. In video games, of course.

The first thing I thought of was that Spec Ops scene. I literally sat back & thought.”…… oh fuck… what have I done?” It changed the whole game for me because it was a real kick to the balls.

Recently I felt bad about how the Bloody Baron quest line turned out in W3.

I usually tend to feel crappy about it when well-written characters die because of something I’ve done, because I’ve become invested in their story.

            I wanted something more like:

Haha. Blood Dragon has been lying on my nr1 game to play for a year now. The first time I installed it I got a Uplay error, so I got “de moer in” and left it for a year.
In my defense I play a LOT of co-op games, so that’s where most of my time goes in games.

I have a real personal moral issue with stuff like this. I always try to be good and when I get quests to do something bad I generally try to avoid them.
Except in PayDay2, there I have once robbed a jewelry store, some civ tried to call the cops, so I killer her and then proceeded to murder the rest of the people in the store because “they asked for it”. My excuse is that I wasn’t having a good day.

Even the one that looked good, all turned out to bad bastards.

Edit* It is the moral choices that get to me the most. I am a very morally driven person, but it is complex, as all things with people are.

Yes man. In Skyrim, I tried to join the Dark Brotherhood. Couldn’t get myself to do the quests. Then I tried thieves guild, that didn’t work for me either. :/

I see everyone saying they feel bad for the choices they make in games and how it plays out on their characters and other characters… I only feel bad when I choose the wrong weapon to use in the situation. I feel so like a bad person because of this!

Haha. That’s actually quite funny. But I sometimes have the same issue when you pick a “class” of warrior at the start of a game and two quests in you realise you made the wrong decision.

90% of the time I have no idea what I’m doing so I blame that for not feeling sorry for people in games.

Couldn’t bring myself to kill the Little Sisters in Bioshock. Shooting babies in Dead Space 2 was something that always made me feel uncomfortable. Basically everything one is forced to do in The Last of Us. As much as I love the Uncharted Games, Drake and Sully are nothing short of mass murderers and should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity and archaeology.

BTW we also have a Ark:SotF server up and running for a SotF event Saturday. 2 persons per tribe though if you are interested. Winning tribe gets a copy of Reign of Kings each. 🙂

GTA2, there was a mission where you had to drive a bus and pick up passengers, only to drop them off at a meat processing plant run by the Russian Mob, to be turned into sausages. You had to stand there and watch them walk, crying, into the meat grinder. After that mission I drove to the in-game church, and just sat there for a full 15minutes lamenting what I’d just done, and listening to the choir.

In guild wars 2 there are these creatures called oakhearts that lumber around the forest areas that are generally chilled unless you attack them. But you know shit happens and sometimes you have to put them down and I feel terrible, like im hurting the forest or something.

mass effect, the rachnii queen, i must have sat there for 30 minutes the first time, waiting to make a decision.
i wish that decision had a bigger impact on the game, was one of the toughest to make.
knowing now, i would really feel like a bad person, but befor, it felt like both options were viable.

If you kill the queen, they become nothing more than husks with no culture or intelligence left.
If you don’t they have a chance for integrating into society.

Yes, sort of. But I would have liked it more that no Rachni exist if you kill them. The whole cloning, borg implant them annoyed me a lot.

I got the best I could for the Rachni, true, cause I figured if the Korgan are around, so must the Rachni be.

yeah, but thats purely theoretical, we never get to see that. there were no tangible results from the decisions.
the only effect we feel in the game is that asari chick in ME2 on Ilium and a few battle points in ME3.

You can send Rachni workers to the crucible. Your decision about the queen determines whether they start helping or sabotage the project

i know that, i did that.
didnt know they could sabotage it though.
but thats still just a battle point thing,15-50 points has very little impact on the game, incomparable to how it felt to actually make the decision in ME1.

After hours and hours of looting -> getting killed, respawning, reiterating on DayZ back in the days when the mod was still brand new, coming across that first surviver that’s not aware of you behind him, aiming a gun straight at his head while he’s fixing a car…

As I was about to pull the trigger, I realised how long this guy must have grinded* to get to this point… so Moral-Dilemma kicks in 😐

Ended up wasting him as he turned around and kept yelling over the mic “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry…”

Wasn’t too chuffed with myself that night 🙁
    { After that, like with all serial killers… it got easier and more enjoyable }

( Though when the apocalypse hits, know that I’ll kill you for your beanz D: )

Fallout 3 for me. Even though I’m mostly good, I always manage to do something incredibly evil because it lets me.
First playthough I blew up Megaton then felt bad and killed Tenpenny, so megaton stayed a radioactive hole for the rest of the game. I also slaughtered everyone in Oasis (except the children) and took that place for myself.

I’ve been playing it again recently, this time I saved Megaton and killed Tenpenny. Then I tried to talk the ghouls out of attacking Tenpenny Tower, but they wouldn’t listen so I had to put them down, which I didn’t like doing. Then I went back to the tower and everyone was so grateful for what I did. It made me angry, so I murdered everyone.
I was ok killing the security guards, but when I found myself chasing down the screaming, cowering residents and shotgunnning them in the back of the head, I kinda felt bad.

Surprised no one mentioned the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Airport Massacre Scene, that caused such a furor in the media because players got to de-pixelate a whole bunch of NPC’s.

At the time, said it’s only a game and wasted the lot and moved onto the next chapter, does that make me bad?
