Injustice 2 set a new precedent for fighting game design when it released last year. Though it lacks much of the complexity attributed to tournament fighters like Street Fighter V or Tekken 7, NetherRealm Studio’s latest one-upped the competition in several departments. Its accessibility is a testament to its user-friendly design and it offers a level of polish in its presentation that is unparalleled in the genre. And it could mean great things for a new Mortal Kombat
Sometimes, you don’t need massive open-worlds or a heart-warming journey through artistic dreamscapes when you’re looking to play a game. Sometimes, you just want to punch someone really really hard. While I wouldn’t recommend doing that in real life, you can at least get away with that level of violence in video games. Especially if it’s inside of a fighting game. But which one to choose? You look back at the impact that Mortal Kombat has had over the years, and there’s so much to write about. The technical breakthroughs, pissing off overzealous parents and being the benchmark for reboots. More than that though, I’ll always remember Mortal Kombat for something else: It was the one game that helped the fighting genre find its spine. And then ripped it out.
You can’t spell Mortal Kombat without Raiden and a brain concussion, and it looks like the same might be true for Injustice 2 as EarthRealm’s protective deity is headed to this year’s best fighting game. Kind of disappointing not to have that option.
