The Xbox 360 – still the top selling HD console – has been plagued with hardware problems, largely a result of shoddy design and poor manufacturing. While the prevalence of the ominous “Red Ring of Death†has lessened (some say to make way for the now more common e74 error), Xbox 360’s do still die. Thankfully, after ... [»]
After the untimely demise of MI Digital, confusion reigned as to who would be handling the (very necessary) warranties – and just as importantly, who would be distributing the consoles, accessories and first-party software. Not too long after, we got our answer to the first question; Warranties would be handled by Powercare, a new entity that had previously split off from MI Digital.Today, we get our answer to the second – ... Thanks to my very own ninja spies, I found a copy of the latest MI Digital pricelist in my inbox this morning. In what can only be a testament to the power of consumer voice, I’m happy to confirm that recommended retail pricing of current Microsoft published AAA titles has been reduced to R699, putting 2008 fan favourites Gears of War 2 and Fable 2 back in to the reach of John Everyman. As yet unreleased titles - such as the highly anticipated Halo Wars – have an RRP of R799. While still not cheap, it’s certainly easier to stomach. There is one caveat though; Hardware and accessory pricing remains unchanged, with the Xbox 360 Pro console still retailing at R3799. The Elite, with a retail value of R4999, makes the PS3 seem an attractively priced option when comparing features. Let’s not even begin to discuss that ridiculously priced wireless networking adapter. It’s a victory, albeit a somewhat hollow one, for ... [»]
Late last year, a post on the PS3za forums alerted the general populace to some rather disconcerting price increases. Not only would the Xbox 360 be receiving particularly heavy hardware price increases, but Microsoft AAA titles would shoot up to the convulsion-inducing price of R999.Many, including LazyGamer, cried foul. After all, other prominent distributors – EA, SK and Megarom – have managed to keep their pricing within the realms of reality. The South African distributor, MI Digital, cited the usual reasons for the increases – a weakened Rand, increased operational costs, and a higher cost from suppliers. A reason they forgot to mention was greed. It’s come to light, through a post by “warrenfe†on popular consumer watchdog site HelloPeter, that MI may in fact be profiteering. When questioned about the elevated pricing, Microsoft’s Response Management stated that “Microsoft has confirmed that its titles will continue to launch at R699.†Excuse me? R699? That’s a ... [»]
