Games today, for the most part, are guided entertainment experiences. Perhaps because they attained such mass market appeal, games have become considerably easier over the years - mostly through all sorts of digital hand-holding. Games tell you what to do, where to go and how to play or exist as corridors, giving the pretence of freedom.
Here’s a fan’s look at what seminal shooter ... [»]
It’s time to enter yet another post-apocalyptic wasteland, teaming with antagonists that range from horribly mutated humans and creatures, to rifle-wielding bandits and oppressive, well-armed tyrants with an axe to grind against anyone who doesn’t see things their way.
But can id Software once again revolutionise the genre in which they made their name, or should Rage have had some counselling before release?Set at some undetermined point in the future, humanity ... [»]
Last week you told you of an insider who said that Doom 4 had been indefinitely postponed following the unexpectedly low critical acclaim of id’s long-in-development post-apocalyptic shooter Rage. According to said insider, the top brass at id Overlord Bethesda Softworks have developed "a serious lack of confidence in the project management at id," resulting in the project being shelved.
id says otherwise."Complete bollocks," says Bethesda’s Pete Hines.

There’s been much speculation that RAGE, the post apocalyptic shooter from the guys who brought you Doom and Quake would require a pretty large install on the PS3. Speculate no more, because id has confirmed that it’ll carry an 8Gb mandatory install. It’s not all bad though - because that install could make the PS3 version better than the Xbox 360’s.The reason for that is the data that’s ... [»]
Despite the fact that’s it’s gorgeous (well, as gorgeous as a bleak post-apocalyptic world can be) and that it runs at a buttery smooth 60 frames per second (on all platforms, I’ve found it very difficult to drum up much enthusiasm for id’s imminent id Tech 5 showcase RAGE. This TV advert for the game might’ve just changed that, thanks ... [»]
John Carmack, id’s knows his hardware. He knows how to optimize software to take advantage of whatever’s available to him. RAGE is evidence of this; it runs at 60 frames per second on all systems, with some of the most impressive graphical fidelity you’ll find in games today. If you follow him on Twitter, it becomes apparent that he’s some sort of sentient machine being jacked straight in to the matrix. He sees in code. For ... [»]
The release of id’s glorious 60 frames per second post-apocalyptic shooter might still be a few months away, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a taste of RAGE right now. For free too, if you’re sporting one of Apple’s shiny iDevices.Recently, id Software issued a challenge to fans; if they get to 100,000 “Likes†on the RAGE Facebook page, they would make Rage, and Rage ... Do you hate having to keep your PC constantly connected to the net in order to enjoy a few rounds of fragging or dungeon-questing, thinking that the practice is a draconian method of stopping video game pirates? That may be true, but the FPS studio that built Quake and Doom, id, thinks that a constant ... [»]
Rage is shaping up to be a great game so far, blending fantastic visuals with elements of first person shooting and wasteland racing thrown into the mix. But at its core, Rage still maintains a focus on eviscerating enemies with high powered assault rifles. And it wouldn’t be an Id game if we didn’t have some unique and incredible weapons at ... [»]
When interviewed by Eurogamer,Id CEO Todd Hollenshead gave his predictions for the upcoming first person shooter, going into detail about why he expects that two-thirds of Rage will be bought for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3,while the remainder of sales would be from the PC ... [»]
It has been a little over six years since id software touched the Doom franchise, and if we put aside 2010's Quake Arena for XBLA, they have also had little to no involvement in the Quake series with no sign of jumping back on the bandwagon. Until now that is.Jason Kim, senior producer at id Software, recently spoke to Shack news as they got the low down on what ... [»]
We say "finally" because this was actually announced three years ago at the 2007 QuakeCon. Bethesda Softworks (who bought id a while ago, remember?) have confirmed that Xbox 360 gamers will be able to get their nostalgic frag on come 15 December 2010.Quake Arena Arcade is the Xbox Live Arcade port ... 3D, like Hansel, is so hot right now. TV manufacturers are incredibly keen to shove the tech down consumer throats. Sony, likewise, is heavily advocating 3D gaming – a feature that’ll be present in its upcoming blockbusters, like Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 3 and Motorstorm Apocalypse. Crysis developers Crytek are also pretty keen on 3D gaming. Some people though, ... [»]
Haha ha, you hapless disc-changing fools! Because of your poor choice of console you’re going to have to get up in the middle of your games to change discs, COMPLETELY RUINING whatever immersion you had in whatever game you were playing on your inferior Xbox. It was recently confirmed that the 360 id’s RAGE will ship on two discs – And honestly, who would ... [»]
If you haven't heard of Id's (published by EA Games) latest FPS entitled Rage then take a look below at some of the latest screens and trailer. Built on the Tech5 (id Software's brand new game engine), the allegedly all-new-take on first person shooters looks like a world of awesomeness.CEO of id Software (Todd Hollenshead) ... [»]
