It's one thing to look into a game as an individual product, but human nature tends to have people throwing down comparisons left, right and centre. When there is no official yardstick to measure something, the next best thing is to look at is something similar. Gamers compare all sorts of things all the time. Boxers have their own unique attributes on paper, but it is their ability in the ring that determines who reigns supreme. It is with this thinking that I present to you today's two contestants in a gaming head to head battle.
It’s the beginning of the week and no one is more upset about that than I am, I didn’t get to play nearly enough games this weekend and now I’m stuck here working while my level 16 soldier is sitting in stasis waiting for me to take him back into Sledge's lair.
Yes I’m finally getting into Borderlands and am currently horribly hooked and completely overpowered… but that’s not what I want to speak about this morning. No I want to flash back to the big argument last year and now that the DLC has landed and many other games have appeared I wanted to know how many of you are still playing Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3?
We have a lot of conversations behind the scenes about certain franchises being milked and the first title that is always brought up is the FIFA series which has a yearly full release which is sometimes seen as a simple squad update that could have been accomplished via DLC.
So after ploughing hours of my life into FIFA 11 I was given the job of quickly finding out that’s changed in FIFA 12 and doing a quick review on it. That was over 50 hours of gameplay ago and I’m not closer to narrowing it down.
With the final release* in the trilogies out of the way for Resistance and Gears of War it’s come the time to look back and see which next-gen IP walked away with the prize and which has been shunted into the corner to lick it’s wounds.
Gears of War 1 was released exclusively to the Xbox 360 in November of 2006 while Resistance: Fall of Man was released exclusively to the PS3 just 4 days later on the 11th of November 2006.
It’s time for the first graphical head to head of 2010 and with the PS3 generally losing the cross platform comparisons it will be interesting to see if it can start 2010 off with a bang.
First up it is worth mentioning that the guys at Lens of Truth were hard pressed to find any graphical difference between the two games with one of them even going so far as to go back and confirm that he didn’t have two screenshots from the same game.
This isn’t going to come as a surprise to anyone who has followed the Bayonetta demo comparisons between the Xbox 360 and PS3.
During the demo comparisons it was proven that the Xbox 360 version was far superior to the PS3 one in virtually every way but that was only a demo and obviously SEGA had time to go back and polish the PS3 version somewhat.
Well unfortunately they decided to go to the pub instead and while they were away the intern gave it a crack and broke the game some more. That’s right the final version of Bayonetta on the PS3 is considerably worse than the 360 version, even more so than we saw in that demo.
In some ways it’s a pity this story has popped up while most people are taking a long weekend as it would have been enjoyable to be ignorantly abused just before my weekend. But then again maybe not.
Destructoid are at TGS right now and one of their guys has managed to have a go at both the Forza 3 and GT5 demo’s on display and has put together a comparison article about the two.
Some of the most notable comments about a single title are
I had a discussion with Nick this morning about whether or not we should be posting the results from Round 19 of the Eurogamer face off’s, basically the interest in the articles has been dropping over the months and now that there is no longer a completely dominant platform the surprise factor is gone.
That being said I still think it’s interesting to see how it’s going so here are the results from the latest round in a simplified format.
I have always enjoyed the Eurogamer console comparisons, they have the technical backing to avoid any false claims of favouritism and word the articles as politically correct as possible to avoid fanboy accusations…
However having said that it hasn’t made a difference but you have to admire the effort.
So in the time that Eurogamer have been running the comparisons what is the current score?
When you think about the Xbox 360, two major exclusive titles always spring to mind, Gears of War and Halo 3.
So what if you have just bought a console or have a friend who has just bought a console and you just cannot decided which one of the two is the must-have game that should grace the system.
IGN have put together a great head to head video, pitting Gears of War 2 against Halo 3 in duel to the death. Which one is the definitive Xbox 360 title and the one that shouldn't be missed.
With regards to multiplayer, from a local perspective I will say one thing. It is that here in South Africa, we need to stick together to play lag-free games. So out here it really is all about finding out what all your friends are playing and then getting that. It doesn't help if Gears is better or Halo is better because if you have no one to play with then it is no fun at all.
You won't believe who won this comparison and by how much. Check it out.
I am a huge Pro Evo fan however the poor showing of PES 2008 forced me to FIFA to get my online fill. I can't say I enjoyed very much of my experience but I still played 200+ games online and managed to get a view of the "other side".This has made me focus on this years face-off a lot more than usual. I, like most PES fans, are hoping that Konami have realised how bad 2008 was and come back with a game that will challenge FIFA and take back its crown. It seems Konami are making the right moves to doing just that, especially now that it appears PES 2009 will have a completely separate Champions League mode featuring not only Liverpool and Manchester United (as previously confirmed) but also Arsenal and Chelsea. However, licenses are still an area where FIFA wins hands down and Konami are going to have to do more than that to truly challenge FIFA again.
