I love Nintendo. I love them to the point that when I get accused of being an Xbox fanboy, I get sad because I’m secretly biased to the house of Mario and Luigi. Crap, shouldn’t have printed that. But I have to admit, Nintendo has made some baffling decisions in the last couple of years. Decisions which are backwards, and hinder the company going forward. And that’s due to the inner workings of the company, which just doesn’t get it. Man.
I seriously do not see the appeal of Let's Play videos. Okay, that's not a blanket statement - I like watching videos of games that I'm curious about to see if I'd actually like them, but once a decision is made I'd much rather play them than watch them. And don't get me started on watching people play Minecraft. But I seem to be part of a rapidly shrinking minority.
I thoroughly enjoyed GeekFest last year. It was worth the journey to the East for me, with tons of cool things on display, awesome shopping, cool cosplay and the chance to see the hoards of other geeks. It's coming back again this year, and it's closer to my home, and is promising to be even more awesome.
Gamers of all kinds exist in all walks of life. While some might talk about it as a life style or a sub-culture, the reality is that people of all professions and ages love their games. The latest cross over is this gaming inspired dance from Dancing with the Stars, and it will blow you away.
I bow before the gods of cosplay. Some people, including our resident cosplay genius Darryn, are able to craft some truly magnificent costumes to accurately replicate their favorite gaming, comic book, anime or movie characters. But this isn't a new thing, as vintage cosplay pictures prove.
Did you know that Ice-T is a huge gamer? Apparently he's even in a Call of Duty clan. However, when he went on Conan, the discussion turned to celebrations of a big win, and the way Ice-T celebrates can't be that unusual.
I had the opportunity to attend E3 for the first time this year. Before setting off, I was genuinely excited by all the cool stuff that I'd get to see. But I was also rather nervous - I'd heard so many negative things over the years about how sexist (and dangerous) these huge conventions could be. So, how much sexism did I actually experience?
We all get irritated by bureaucracy and red tape. Sure, we need it for a normal, functional society, but it's still just such a nuisance. Air travel in particular can be a nightmare, something I know Darryn is dreading when we go to E3. But just imagine if you were a street fighter.
Iron Man toys are a dime a dozen. I can’t even walk into a Pick n Pay these days without seeing a certain armoured avenger and his Movember face. But a toy based on the villainous Obadiah Stane and his armoured getup from the first film? That’s rarer than the word “compound” on a SABC news report. But finally, for anyone who has always wanted to own a big Lebowski action figure, that was bald and smothered in armour, here it is!
