Is Square Enix teasing a Final Fantasy VII HD remaster?

FF VII HD

I often think back to the glory days of Squaresoft. I used to buy so many of their RPGs. This was before I ever read game reviews, back in the before times when I trusted the guy in the game store and learned to trust certain publishers – trust which has been dashed over the years. Now Square Enix is hinting at a lot for 2015, and I’m hoping that they don’t disappoint me anymore.

Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda spoke to Nikkei Trendy, translated by Gematsu. He teased “a considerable amount of high-end games” for the fiscal 2015 year, including a JRPG surprise.

For fiscal 2015, I think we have a considerable amount of high-end games both inside and outside the country. Starting with Final Fantasy XV, we’ll be putting out news for Japanese RPGs.

He added that they’ll have a “little surprise, too”, going on to clarify that he’s referring to a JRPG for home game machines. But it’s this comment that makes me think that fans might finally get what they’ve been begging for:

With respect to HD titles for 2015, our Japanese and Western studios are both bolstering their lineups considerably, so it’d be wise to keep an eye on them.

Why specify that it’s an HD title if it’s not an HD remake? Surely a new game that’s built for the new consoles would be HD, so perhaps the reason to point to HD is that we’re getting some new remasters. Most of the major Final Fantasy titles have already gotten the HD treatment, so could this finally mean a Final Fantasy VII remaster? I’d actually be even more excited if we got a Chrono Trigger remaster, but that’s just me. Oh, and Squeenix, you’re welcome to revisit Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore if you’re looking to mine your old catalogue of games.

    1. It’s not going to be a FF7 HD remaster because the company is too busy with FF15 and KH3 to go into another huge production like that

    2. It’s going to be that RPG that was hinted at that would be made by Motomu Toriyama

    http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/12/26/final-fantasy-xiii-series-director-motomu-toriyama-will-announce-his-new-game-in-2015/

    3. It sounds like it’s a new thing that is unrelated to any existing franchises at the very least.

You really don’t look things up much, do you?

Ok, but why specifically mention “HD titles” if what you’re referring to seems to be a completely new game?

Surely an HD title would refer to a remaster and not something fresh (which wouldn’t carry an “HD” tagline)?

No, because PS4 and Xbone games are usually considered HD ever since the whole “1080 60 fps” craze started happening

It’s a picture of FF15 and below the picture it says

“Besides major titles like Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III, we don’t know much about what else Square Enix has in store as far as major console games go.”

But it’s clearly NOT a FF7 remake or remaster. You forget that those two games are huge right now and have top priority. If they tried to make FF7 remake or remaster, they would be overloaded. And that would be bad for business.

Well they clearly have something else “HD” planned besides KH3 and FF15. I’m not saying it’s FF7 and I’m not saying it isn’t but they clearly have something planned.

Could you read the last paragraph of that article and tell me what it says? It says exactly what it says above, and I concur with Zoe that there remains the possibility that they will bring out more HD remasters, and that FF7 HD is therefore a possibility.

Because SquareEnix also release a lot of tittles on the VIta and DS platforms which are not HD?

Fair point… but then those are still re-released onto HD capable hardware as XYZ HD. For example, FF Type-0 HD, which came out recently.

Hence, I think the HD Titles referred to are indeed remasters and thus it is entirely possible that FF7 could be remastered. Bottom line – Farron was saying that what I’ve stated is impossible and I’m trying to prove him wrong. Not by providing proof, but by pointing out the flaw in his logic and how it relates to the circumstances.

        A. She clearly jumped on the FF7 remake train when we all know in reality that’s not going to be it.

        B. The talked about this the other day and only refered to it as a “JRPG surprise”
        http://www.siliconera.com/2015/03/17/square-enix-will-reveal-jrpg-surprise-consoles-later-year/

        C. This coincides with the new RPG news Toriyama stated would be announced this year.

It’s not going to be a Final Fantasy VII remaster/remake.

I’m just sick and tired of hearing these F7 fanboys/fangirls say “IS IT A FF7 REMAKE!?!?!” Every single time Square announces something secretive. They know it’s not the FF7 remake, they know that Square has their hands full with FF15 and KH3, and yet they ignore it and blindly hope for FF7.

That grates on my nerves because of people like Zoe jumping on the FF7 train when realistically it’s not there.

Square Enix DOES have the resources to put together more than 2 teams. They could just as easily get one of them working on an HD remake of a game. (Here’s where I agree with you) The problem with FFVII-IX is that they’re so old that few if any of the resources are reusable in an HD remake. They’ve gone on record saying that they won’t touch FFVII with a 10′ pole because the development time it would take to modernize and do right is not in step with their business model. HD remakes for their PS2 titles are decidedly easier because the resources are easier to update and don’t require reworks as significant and just frankly aren’t as beloved as those titles, so the effort to appease fans is lower.

They know every Final Fantasy fan in the world wants an HD remake of Final Fantasy VII and they know they could sell it. They also know they could sell a Xenogears remake if they put in the effort, but it’s simply too much effort for the risk. If they screw those titles up by handing them off to a B-team they’ll lose a lot of fan trust and their A-teams are all working on their new stuff.

The good news is that since FFXV is most likely going to sell well they’ll start putting more effort into console RPGs again. That means they’ll think about investing more money into fan favorites like these. Unlikely we’ll see VII any time soon, but they’ll probably get around to it before we’re all too old.

All of those things were great, but I really just didn’t like the license board and the fact that most characters all felt the same in combat. I hope they remaster the International Zodiac Job System version which has actual character classes and unique license board which would in all honesty make it one of my fav FF titles.

If they had to do an HD version of FF7 or any of their past titles though I just hope for god’s sake the keep it 2.5D and just use visuals on par with Ori and the blind forest and don’t go all “OPEN WORLD! ENDLESS HOURS OF EMPTY FUCKING BARAN TERRAIN TO EXPLORE FOR AGES!”, just leave the game play as it is and redo the visuals & music.

Then I would probably stand up and applaud them.

Don’t you mean remake? Because technically what they already have is a FF7 remaster [It’s not as great as the X/X-2 remaster since it was just the PC version, but that was still a remaster]. What you’re hoping for is a remake.

And at this point, I doubt it. They’re just tormenting us. Did you see the FF7 announcement for PS4? They got everyone hyped and made it seem like they were finally doing it, but it turned out to be just the same old version.

So if they honestly are finally doing ti then they’re just being huge trolls while they still can.

Those of you ranting that FFVII would be extremely hard to remake because assets can’t be reused, etc, are obviously forgetting that there is a PC version that is, in fact, very easy to modernize as has been shown with the community behind the Bootleg mod. I’ve used it and the changes made to the game are pretty incredible and that’s just people doing it in their spare time. The fact is that with the consoles using x86 CPUs, it would be extremely easy to port FF VII and FF VIII to the PS4 with updated textures, character models, and FMVs and charge 160 dollars for a collectors edition that everyone and their mother would buy.

Square said that if they choose to release an FF VII remake, it will be the last of the Final Fantasy games. It seems to me that XV is probably a great stopping point where they can start a new series and start churning out remasters.

Before we get a Final Fantasy VII HD game, I want them to finish Kingdom Hearts 3, and Final Fantasy 15. A 7 remake would be wonderful, If I could have it my way, I’d have it remade with Crisis Core HD, and Dirge of Cerberus all in one, with enhanced game play. Crisis Core could use a little touching up, and Dirge of Ceberus was.. okay.

However, it seems that Square is teasing a Final Fantasy X-3, a VI remake, Kingdom Hearts 1.5/2.5 for PS4, and the Possibility of an XV-2. I’d like to see all of these in my lifetime, lets just be patient.

They are also working on a Kingdom Hearts: Chi for mobile, which leads me to believe that at some point they will want to do a new Kingdom Hearts on the side. Dream Drop was really successful. Then they have Final Fantasy 16 in the works as well…

Square is BUSY. There are a lot of requests, so be prepared to get your hopes up. My suggestion is that we take things as they come this gen, and try to enjoy it.
