Go full stealth in Rise of the Tomb Raider

I generally prefer taking a stealthy approach in games. Sometimes open combat is fun, but I often prefer to sneak around and kill everyone in the shadows so that I can happily traipse through the environment without anyone seeing me – because they’re all dead. However, some people like to be even stealthier and move through an entire area without ever killing anyone, which will be an option in the new Tomb Raider.

Speaking to Gamespot, senior designer Michael Brinker explained how Rise of the Tomb Raider features an expanded range of player choice. In the last game, while Lara could distract enemies, it usually ended up in a fight. This time, players can choose their approach; if they want to avoid a situation entirely, stealthily kill opponents or go in for a full-on fight, it’s up to the player. Skills, talents and gear will also play into this so that each person who plays the game can find the approach that works best for them. So, can you go through the entire game avoiding every single fight?

For the most part, yes. You saw that released version of the advancing the storm level that we have, where people get to play through it all in its action level. You can go through the whole thing stealthy without killing everyone. We do have a lot more of those options in the game. A lot of fans are like, “I don’t want to kill anyone” and well, you don’t have to in that section if you don’t want to.

That sounds like a “not totally”, but still, it’s nice to have the options to take a less deadly, more sneaky approach to the game. That might not be everyone’s preference, but it’s cool to see the option available for those who prefer to play that way.

I move quickly and quietly in any game that has that option. Until I get marked. Then I get loud till the next level/cutscene.

I dig stealth games… but it mustn’t be “you got seen, f*ck you, you fail”
