FF type-0

Final Fantasy Type-0, originally a PSP title, got some HD loving earlier this year for current gen consoles, namely the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Square’s JRPG will now be coming to the Master Race. It will launch on Steam in just under three weeks time – on August the 18th.

Here’s the official blurb and trailer (via PC Gamer):

Step into the fray as Class Zero, a group of students from an elite military academy whose country is attacked by an aggressive neighbouring Empire. In the brutal and harrowing struggle that follows, defeat the Empire and uncover the secrets behind the war using a range of powerful magical and combat abilities and an exciting new battle system.

There are also a bunch of new features coming with this version, including improved resolutions and various other bits and bobs:

  • Upgraded graphics resolution options for high end pc’s
  • Improved in-game battle camera
  • Full controller support
  • Full STEAM achievements and trading cards
  • Scalable motion blur settings
  • New Character speed boost
  • Increased blood levels from the original PSP version
  • Customizable dynamic screen shot mode

Type 0

Even though I’m a huge fan of the Final Fantasy franchise, Type-0 hasn’t really grabbed my interest, not in the slightest. Zoe said it was rather good in her review of the PS4 version, which she gave a 7.5, and even that hasn’t swayed me over.

I was going to give the PC version a miss for sure, and then I saw the pre-purchase bonuses…

Pre-purchase FINAL FANTASY TYPE-0 HD and receive the Master Chocobo as your courier and Moogle (Class Zero) as your ward in DOTA 2, plus an exclusive FINAL FANTASY TYPE-0 HD loading screen. Also, if you pre-purchase now you’ll receive a 10% discount!

Um… a Chocobo courier and Moogle wards? Square are toying with me here – they know Dota 2 suckers such as myself would fall for that sort of thing! I MUST have those bonuses… I MUST! They pulled the same shenanigans with the original HD release a few months ago, which granted access to the much wanted demo of Final Fantasy XV. Well played Square marketing team… well played!

Pre-purchasing Final Fantasy Type-0 will cost $26.99. I think I may just end up purchasing it (FOR REASONS THAT DON’T INVOLVE DOTA 2 COSMETICS). What about you?

  1. Anyone here who played the PS4 version that can recommend it? Square Enix is not a name I really trust anymore.

I am a huge Final Fantasy fan and buy anything they throw at us (just bought the re-released guides for FF7, 8 and 9 just because I know it exists) so this is going to be really hard for me to say but Type-0 hasn’t grabbed my attention either.

I read that it was amazing and a great spin-off for the franchise etc. but after playing it for a while I started to get just a little bored. It’s very much a rinse and repeat type game where you have a base (the academy) where you can interact with people and obtain new missions, you go out to do those missions, return to the academy and then do it all over again. The story itself is intriguing and I’m basically playing to see what happens next and not really for the pure enjoyment of the game. But there are way too many characters and I find myself not really caring about any of them.

The battles are fast-paced and a bit overwhelming at times due to the amount of actions going on in battles and there is constant progression in the characters abilities so it there is usually some new spell or ability to try out but the battle locations and types of enemies don’t vary that much either. The environments also get really bland and dull really quickly. It’s like they used a template for every location and just adjusted it here and there to make it look slightly different from another location.

It is a PSP title after all so all of the above is to be expected. If you’re looking for the next amazing RPG to get stuck into I don’t think you’ll find it here. It was probably amazing to experience on the PSP when it first came out but personally I don’t think it translated that well to a consol experience.

Also avoid if you’re in any way prone to dizziness as the camera is one of the worst I have ever experienced in a game.

To be honest, I don’t mind replaying 7,8,9,10 and 10-2 until another worthy title is released. My Ps1 and Ps2 are still working perfectly after all these years.

I’ve replayed those ones so many times as well. They were all literally perfect (even X-2 had its redeeming qualities). Also still have my PS1 and PS2 but I’ve preferred playing PS1 titles on the Vita.

I still have PS2 titles to complete but playing it on an HD TV is terrible : / how do you play yours?

I have the Ps1, Ps2, Sega Genesis, Nintendo N64 and SNES hooked up on an old Tv that I have had since 2001 (only way to get good quality when using analog based consoles)

For the PS3 and Xbox 360 I have then hooked up to a 40″ LED flatscreen. Still deciding if its even worth getting a PS4 since all I do on consoles these days is speed run practice.

Good thing I asked my mom to keep her old CRT TV as I figured I would have no choice but to play the older console games on that type of TV.

I only have a PS4 because it came ‘free’ with a phone contract. If there are any games that have jumped out at you I would say it is worth getting. I’m enjoying the added functionality of the console. Currently have Witcher 3, Bloodborne and Type-0 so it’s not sitting in a corner unplayed. Witcher 3 alone is a good reason to get a PS4. The game is beautiful.

This game will sell well only because of the Dota 2 courier you get when you pre-order it XD

I unfortunately have to agree with you, a company who used to be carried on the shoulders of there fans just by mentioning a Final Fantasy game, now have to resort to crap like this.
