Blink and the year just disappears. We are in December already! It’s the perfect time to wind down and take a break, and by break, I mean play games! It’s also the perfect opportunity to spend time with family and friends, without the pressure of work and hopefully life in general. Why not combine the best of both worlds and spend some holiday time getting lost in co-op gaming? The folks from King Price Insurance have asked us to round up some top co-op titles you can pick up this festive season.

LittleBigPlanet 3

Some of my best gaming memories spawn from the LittleBigPlanet series. Believe it or not, I bought the first one before I evened owned a PlayStation – that’s how badly I wanted it! Fast forward a few years, and the series is well established, with the third title only just recently being released.

Geoff rather enjoyed it, and I don’t see why anybody wouldn’t. The campaign is suitable for single-player, but infinitely more enjoyable when played with friends. In my experience with previous titles, the four-player co-op is amazing, entertaining, and filled with the stuff of memories. Even beyond the included narrative, there is a plethora of online levels to explore. It’s the perfect game for any group of people – parents and their kids, or a group of friends hanging out.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

The Super Smash Bros series is one that has been around for a lot longer, 15 years in fact. The beloved franchise takes characters from all of Nintendo’s titles, putting them to battle to determine who is the best. The latest title was released for the 3DS a little while ago, and it was fantastic. Now, it’s available for the Wii U too. Got an age old feud or argument with someone? Settle it in Smash!

I’ve only spent a handful of hours with the game, and I already enjoy it more than its little 3DS sibling – only because it takes what was already awesome and somehow makes it even better. There are loads of different game modes to get lost in. In fact, the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros includes a new mode that’s a first for the series… you can take part in eight-player smash!

SSBWIIU

It’s frantic action, but incredibly fun. One really underappreciated feature in the Wii U is the fact that it is compatible with so many controllers. Got some Wiimotes lying around? They’ll work perfectly. The 3DS? It connects easily and serves as a controller too. Own enough and you can have eight people shouting at each other, all in good spirit and the name of fun.

One final feature worth mentioning is Amiibo. This is Nintendo’s answer to the likes of Disney Infinity and Skylanders. Many of these figurines are compatible with current Nintendo games, and will be compatible with future titles too. Their integration into Super Smash Bros is rad. Place your purchased Amiibo on the gamepad and its digital persona appears in game. Through training and playing with it, your Amiibo will get stronger and level up. You can then take it to a friends place for example, scan it into their game of Super Smash Bros and use it to do battle!

Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham

If you’re gamer, you’ve more than likely encountered a Lego title at some point. Their latest game, Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham sticks to their addictive formula – Collect blocks, battle enemies, and locate secret areas.

The name is somewhat deceiving though, it’s not a game focused exclusively on the Dark Knight. Instead, you’ll find many familiar faces from the DC universe.Darryn reviewed it and gave it an eight out of ten. Being the Batman (and comic book) specialist of Lazygamer, I like to think his score is very accurate.

Lego Batman 3 comes with it’s own co-op. If you’re a fan of the DC universe, you’ll find lots of love here. It’s ideal family fun for everybody this holiday season!

Skylanders: Trap Team

Skylanders blew people away back in 2011 when it first came out. Why? It came with “a portal of power” which allowed users to scan their purchased models into the game world to play with. It was a neat idea, allowing people to not only collect awesome figurines, but also level them up and make use of them in a digital game. The best part? A figure wasn’t tied down to a specific console, it worked on all of them.

This year saw the release of a new installment in the franchise – new gameplay, and new figurines to collect with Skylanders: Trap Team. It’s available and compatible on everything, including iOS and Android, making it a viable purchase for anybody on the go (perfect for kids on a long road trip for example). It also has co-op, meaning the fun isn’t restricted to just one person. Team up with a buddy and take on Kaos!

You know – those people you always fight with and can never reason with. Oh and you also cannot pick them, unlike your friends (list).

Sore point? Hey I don’t really speak to my siblings at all. I get on better with the wife’s family than I do mine whom I rarely see. Parents cool – siblings hmmmmm…

As a lecturer I think it fitting to say “All work and no play makes Kensei a boring person” – chill now and then! Brain does wonders when its allowed to breath.

Since about grade 4 I figured out that if I didn’t spend ~50% of my time chilling I would over-panic and end up forgetting most of what I had studied.

Great idea! buy games for the whole family to play, then sit back and wonder why you never have any time to play the games you like/ really want to play cause bro/ sis/ mom/ pop’s etc. are playing the whole time. LOL
