MSSA vs SAESA website battle

One of the smaller complaints around the MSSA is that their website has been pretty woeful and they have been attempting to use Facebook and Wikipedia to spread the information on their goals.

In response to his woeful comment on his first interview, Simphiwe Maphumulo responded to Mweb on the 28th of February stating

“With regards to the MSSA website, this setup of a new website is a priority for me, and I have been assured by our developer that it will be up and running in two weeks.”

The 14th of March came and went and still no website and so on the 15th of March 2014 the MSSA held a pretty useless press conference and again Simphiwe promised that they would have a website up with the next 7 days. It’s 9 days on from that event and we have still no sign of an MSSA website. In fact it’s gotten worse and their ugly landing page has now been replaced with a blank screen.

MindSportWebsite

As you can see the above isn’t much of a website… not to mention that they registered the name wrong as it should be mindsportssa.co.za but hey they can’t get anything everything right. So we know the new president is ineffectual and makes promises he unable to keep.

But what about the competing players’ association, The South African eSports Association? Well they have also promised that they wiould have an awesome new website a few weeks back, however while their website is a lot prettier than the blank page that the MSSA has it’s not quite a website either.

saesa

So two organisations vying for eSports in South Africa and neither of them have been able to create one over a couple of weeks.

What’s worse in my opinion is that both the organisations are planning on using WordPress for their sites. Same as we do. So I can personally guarantee that you can get a WordPress website up and populated with content in under an hour.  It’s a poor attempt from both parties on what is probably the least important aspect of the organisations…but also probably the easiest.

I’d reach out for comment but the MSSA has banned me from contacting any of them,  and the SAESA already said last week they are working on getting their site up and running.

[Update] The official SAESA website is now live – 11:53am 24th March 2014

Good use of white space by MSSA.

He was so awesome in this (except that one shout). I hated him with a passion until this movie and he has only done awesome work since then. He’s also 100% correct in his statement.

Seriously, using WordPress and it takes them weeks to not create a website?

Is this going to be another typical SA thing where we get promised 100 things from each organisation, but both are too busy shifting blame to actually deliver on them? AKA Local politics…

Here’s the process in a nutshell:

        1. Upload wordpress base to your website. Some hosting companies already have this done for you in 1 click. 5 minutes.
        2. Create your passwords and database settings using the easy to use installer. 10 minutes.
        3. Upload a theme, you can buy one or use many of the free ones out there. 5 minutes.
        4. Log into the back end, and start adding your pages and menu items. 15 minutes (if you’ve got the content planned).
        5. Copy/paste or type out the content and add images to articles and so on. This part can take some time, but you can create a front page in an hour, ready to go. From nothing. While you’re doing the content. Assuming everything is already planned, content-wise, the text should take you no more than 45 minutes to copy/paste, and then its simply a matter of adding images, which usually can be added while you copy/paste.

Without much knowledge, pretty much anyone who can read can set up a wordpress website in an hour or two, depending on the amount of content. The only 2 things that take time, are designing a custom template and writing / creating the content itself.

There’s also Joomla you can look into as well – same process basically. Slightly different back-end but the end result is mostly the same. I prefer Joomla, but WordPress is just as good.

You can also look at Drupal, but I’ve not used it before. No reason, other than no need.

I hate it when websites say they’ll be up “soon”. Soon when? Should I check back every day for your convenience? Put a damn date there.

Sure, but if they’re trying to be better than the MSSA, then why are they basically doing the exact same BS with their website. ie: not actually putting one up, when promised.

An eSports Association not being able to set up a website is like a 7 year old not able to use a smartphone. It is impossible to even imagine.

I think that the MSSA have emphatically proven that 1. they only have one computer and 2. they are not really an eSport Association.
