MSSA holding online trials for Dota 2 next month

We received an email from the MSSA today that shocked us. firstly, it was pretty professionally done, without much in the way of poor formatting, typos or any of those editing flubs we’re largely guilty of ourselves. Secondly they’re being oddly forthcoming about upcoming online trials for Dota 2.

“We are proud to announce that the MSSA shall host the 2014 MWEB On-line Dota 2  Championship, which will offer local Dota 2 players the opportunity to qualify for the National Team Trials,” says the mail.

Less forthcoming is the fact that the trials are open to anybody registered with the MSSA or an affiliated club, so you’ll have to do that before signing up.

The email also mentions the “official test matches” against Romania and Mexico which we’ve established are about as official as me crowning myself the King of the Universe, but I digress. The mail suggests that the national team that qualifies will go up against Romania for a second time, and possibly go head to head with Russia..making it just like just about any online game of Dota 2.

Here’s how the tournament will work:

Tournament Structure:

As per the MSSA’s rules, being:

  • If less than six teams, the championship shall be a Round Robin Championship
  • · If 6 to 10 teams the championship shall be four rounds as played to the Swiss System
  • · If 11 to 30 teams the championship shall be five rounds as played to the Swiss System

Eligibility:

· Any player who is a Registered Player affiliated to a MSSA member club may enter.

Entry fee:

  • Entry is free to all full-paid-up Registered Players.
  • Only fully-paid-up Registered Players may participate in this event.

Entry date:

  • Entries need to be submitted to the MSSA by no later than Tuesday, 15 April 2014.

As the qualifiers will count as provincial matches, there’s the opportunity to be awarded provincial colours. As is usual with these things though, any teams that do qualify for test matches will have to reside within 50kms of each other. It’s one of the reasons that last year’s official national team was made up an assortment of Bravado and Energy eSports players.

The qualifiers will be held on April 19, on Mweb’s Dota 2 server – which makes sense as Mweb sponsors the whole affair. If you’re new to Dota 2, then obviously provincial and national matches are not for you. This then, might be more your speed.

You could take over the MSSA violently with 2 chickens, a pig, half an Ingwer and the collective sweat from Brenda watching a Batman episode

To everyone bitching about the registered players only. This is how the other bodies also work. You cannot trial for provincial cue sports if you are not a member of the NBF (National Blackball Federation) it makes sense because players and stats need to be tracked.

This however says nothing about limitations placed on members which the NBF is amazing on.

Yes, quite standard for almost all sports and hobbies regardless whether they are “official” national teams or not.

They don’t really get the online thing do they. I assume it is so that they can give out provincial colours to the team as a whole without actually having to rank/rate the individual player. Also I assume that the team that finishes in the highest position for that province gets colours regardless of how many participants.

And is possible to live 50km from each other and actually be in different provinces.

Make that if the whole team reside in a province that they qualify for provincial colours as well otherwise they can only qualify for national colours.

I hear you, the rule makes no sense but hey its due to the MSSA legislation that is written in stone.

When I did national and provincial trials for sailing, I didnt have to be a registered member of a club/organisation to participate.
was the same for sprinting, the only forms I had to fill in, were the ones that said I was participating/indemnity forms.

The only events Ive had to register a membership for, have been MSSA related ones.
not saying thats how its done for all sports, but just saiyan.

I think club and/or national registration and fees for national events are more the norm.

I know this the case for RC car racing, angling and sport shooting; all of which you need to be a paid-up member of an associated club AND pay a national or provincial registration fee and some you need to pay an event entrance fee as well.

In the breath I want to say that the above three normally keeps records and ranks and are more organised than the MSAA.

Never understood this rule. Pretty sure all the cricketers/football players/rugby players do not live within 50km of each other especially when they’re playing test matches…
