I'm cranky, arrogant and ever so amazingly annoying but when you get to know me you will also realise I'm honest and incredibly good at describing myself... now pass me that beer

  • Argentil

    Dat faux wood paneling.

  • TechniKyle

Pac man got me started, but it was the arcade machine, not the console versions. The console versions lacks the right kind of nostalgia.

    • Argentil

It’s quite a coincidence, I was just discussing what got us started in gaming with a friend of mine, last night. We were linking to youtube links of all of the NES games we played.

      • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

It’s great to reminisce about the gaming past. What’s funny I only look back at those times with great fondness, I wonder if I will look back on next gen when I’m older with the same sentiments.

        • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

You’ll look back and suffer PTSD from all the CoD games…

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Blegh!! …. indeed ….. Will look back at franchises and generic war shooters …. THIS AINT NAM!!!

          • Argentil

            Lol

    • Hammersteyn

The Atari 2600 version of Pacman wa a piece of crap unfortunately

  • Deano

Does it come with the HDMI leads :P

  • FoxOneZA – X-Therminator

My cuz has one just like that o_0

  • FoxOneZA – X-Therminator

Golden China because I wasn’t an elitist :P

  • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

I think many a current gen gamer could do with being strapped into a chair and made to spend a week playing some of these games. It may make them appreciate current generation games a hella lot more. Okay, I draw the line at Han Solo Dance off, but we have come a LONG way friends. I started off with battle tanks, man, I am old…

    • Hammersteyn

Mario Bros.2 was the first time I played NES. My first game was Adventure Island 2 with the four different dinos one could ride. No worries I am just as old.

      • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

Ah, but Mario Bros.2 STILL rocks the shizzle. I could sit and play that now, I don’t think could manage Gangster Alley though.

        • Hammersteyn

Another one I could play is Castlevania.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            Man, So could I!

What a horrible night to have a curse!!

          • Hammersteyn

Maybe not the second one :P

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Lol! Only reason I would play Simon’s Quest is for that freaking awesome Daytime music aka Bloody Tears

          • TiMsTeR1033

That game Owned! Different weapons i remember that like yday

    • brad coetzee

first video game I ever played was Pong, on this above advertised piece of shite. I became a gamer when we got the Commodore64. Loaded our games off a freakin tape deck! that tech is mental!

  • Skyblue

    Wow, Combat and Space Invaders!

  • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

I was a post Atari gamer child.

I have such fond memories of all the NES games I played. I remember the days of playing Battle Toads Double Dragon with my brother and the joys of Tiny Toons and Felix the Cat.

It wasn’t till I played Chrono Trigger that I really became heavily invested in gaming. Games were going to be much more than points and Hi-Scores. I can’t remember My life without games, jeez…

    • Argentil

Contra, The Flintstones, Nuts & Milk, Track & Field, Circus Charlie etc.

I was really young when I played these games.

      • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Me 2, Circus Charlie was awesome, jumping through hoops of fire like a BOASS .. I also remember playing Lode Runner and Chip n Dale to name a FEW

        • Argentil

As a dumb, uncoordinated child, I could not get past the level with the beach balls (level 4 I think).

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            Dem Balls lol….good times

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

I can actually hear the sound effects and music in my head while looking at that image :)

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            :)

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

That music makes me way happier than any music has any right to hahahahaha

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Haha I know right ….. Gaming Nostalgia is always a happy event

          • Argentil

I had an ROM on my android phone a while ago, just to give it another bash. I still kinda sucked at it.
I let my boss’ kid try it out, it was interesting. He’s a part of the current iPad generation, all about instant gratification, so he’d get irritated with hitting a game over and having to start over. That said, he kept going back to it just to try it again.

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

There’s a rom for android for this!? *runs of to play store*

          • Argentil

Ja, it was free too. I did eventually delete it, cause I felt guilty about pirating it, but you shouldn’t really. I would buy it if it were available on my platforms.

          • Argentil

I tried to find it, to redownload, but it’s not even on my list of apps in the store. It must have been pulled. I did find another site referencing it:

            http://www.appszoom.com/android_games/casual/charlie-circus-android-version_bamam.html

Really bummed they removed it, but I understand :(

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

            aw boo :(

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Surprised he went back to it, but funny enough you find a lot of games on mobile that are designed like older NES games

          • Argentil

Ja, but with nasty microtransactions to offset the difficulty. I would rather my future/imaginery child played the real thing.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

hahaha either or you say lol …… but Agreed, the MT is horrible. there are awesome games on PC too such as Super Meat Boy

          • Argentil

I think playing a game with difficulty and limitations is better than what kids have nowadays. It teaches temperance, and there’s always a greater sense of achievement.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Indeed, It sounds weird but those type of games has a helping hand in molding you into a fine human being lol

          • Hammersteyn

I currently have ALL the NES roms and when away on my Laptop I still fire a random one up from time to time.

          • Captain Minion TallTwit

Same. Vivid images and sounds of that game.

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

DUuuuuuuuuuude! Milk & Nuts was EPIC!

        • Argentil

I know, such a weird little awesome game.

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

And Mappy!? You must remember Mappy! And Elevator action!

That’s it… I need to find me one of those golden china consoles and a few old games!

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Who could forget that, and Dig-Dug!

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Hahahaha. Dig-dug! Pump pump pump POP!

            *Gasp* Such gratuitous violence! #trollol

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

LOOOL , I was thinking about that game a while back and it was really violent for it’s time …. being stalked by crocodiles too … As a kid you never realize how evil it really is lol

          • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

            Pomp pomp pop?

            Sounds like @rincethis:disqus ‘s lovelife

            XD

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Ag nee sies man Erwin! haha

          • Hammersteyn

Yeah dig dug should be glug-glug

          • Argentil

Oh jeez, completely forgot those two. Elevator Action really scared me as a child (no idea why).

          • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

            Mappy hahaha, elevator action ftw!!!

    • Hammersteyn

Ducktales and Megaman 3 while spending Decembers at my Grandparents FTW

      • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Ducktales FTMFW … good times hey, platformers were more than enough to keep your attention for the entire holidays

        • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

Agreed. Though I would venture that if you put that on, and had FFXV sitting next to you, DuckTales would do an exit through the window in your haste tou plug some Lightening on ;)

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

DuckTales would have to moon walk out of the door if XV was next to me.I would throw a pepper steak pie out of the window to play that game

          • TiMsTeR1033

*gives you a pepper steak pie*

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

*Looks to the side*……….*No Final Fantasy 15….* OM NOM NOM NOM NOM

          • TiMsTeR1033

Super mario bros 3 was a killer game back then too. raccoon tail flying and shit. ahhh found memories, and final fantasy 7 I miss that game

          • Argentil

Still got my FFVII, VIII, IX and Tactics. Best FF era imo. Sorry all you FFVI lovers.

          • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

            Tots with you on that!

          • Argentil

Of course you are. You can’t argue with that line-up.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

True that PS 1 FF RULED!!!

          • Argentil

It’s no small wonder the Playstation brand became a household name rivalling Nintendo.

          • Hammersteyn

Still have 7 and 8 on my PS3

          • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

Man I LOVED SM3! There is a special place in my heart for it, right next to the blacked part A:CM crated.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Ahh, Tanooki suits …. good ol times! and miss that game too man , a bloody lot!!

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Touched me in more ways than one.And I’m pretty sure I touched it too ……

          • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

Hahaha! ;) Ol Sepho boy, best frigging bad guy ever!

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Have you played Crisis Core by the way?

          • Argentil

Great game. Was a bizarre spinoff, storywise. Zack and Aerith were meant for each other.
On a less sappy note, the game played brilliantly.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Nice :) glad you played, Out of all the 7 spin-offs, CC was leaps beyond them all…I found Zack to be a much more likeable character and god damn…I knew how it would end but that song, The Price of Freedom and the ending….gosh it’s my favorite ending of any game. but indeed, the gameplay was super duper duper fun, I loved it and it was challenging as all hell

          • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

            No, I haven’t actually… Any good?

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Really good, would recommend a PSP just for that game man …. Brilliant battle system and amazing story telling

          • Argentil

Or a PSVita? I played so much FFTactics: WotL on my Vita. The playstation library really fleshes out the Vita’s appeal.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

True , for the Digital copy. and Damn, WotL was awesome, much better with all those cutscenes and better dialogue… It was so awesome to unlock Cloud lol

          • Argentil

I know. I’ve played it 3 times. Need to finish my current playthrough. I find it’s something I always return to, it just holds up so well, and there’s nothing at the same level as an SRPG. Fire Emblem looks like the closest, recent example, but it is different.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

You want close … and dare I say a bit better ….. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together is MIND BLOWING!!!!!!

          • Argentil

Ja, it’s older though, I rate FFTactics higher. SE are making a Tactics mobile game. It seems to be based more off the Advanced series than the original though.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Have you played the remake though? and bleh, Social game

          • Argentil

Nope, I really should. I just don’t get why SE will remake the NES FF’s, but not the PS ones. I mean, making a tactics sequel would not require a lot of people, let’s be honest. The hardest part would be characters and story.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

I think it’s because of Fan Expectation, FF fans hold those games on HIGH pedestal, anything short of godlike won’t do. I think it’s too big of a risk

          • Argentil

Tactics is a safe bet, imo. It doesn’t have the rabid following of VII, and they can easily carry over the art style from the first game and people would love it. I just think they don’t have a story that would do the game justice.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Indeed, I didn’t really like the Advance series. Ramza’s tale was just too great for anything to compare and the political treachery was just so mature and well thought out

          • Argentil

I was really disappointed with the Advanced games. It felt like it was adapted for kids. Why would kids want to play an in-depth SRPG? There were a couple of additions I enjoyed, but overall – the story and characters crippled the game. Hopefully the newly restructured SE will listen to their fans instead of following the Yen.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

LOL! my exact thoughts, why would kids play an SRPG…Starting off with a snow fight of all things..I hope so too, wouldn’t mind some more of tactics. But I must say , SE is doing great work on mobile, Chaos Rings and Drakerider are awesome!

        • Argentil

I really regret selling my NES, but 8 year olds are hardly the best decision-makers.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

At that age we could hardly see past the nest few hours lol all that is on our mind is just how to have fun and what to play next

  • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

    CHOPIFTER!!!

  • Hammersteyn

It’s been a while since I went to Bid or buy. Some idiot is bidding on AC Marines for the PS3. It’s up to R131.00 at the moment

    • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

Hahaha, needs to be put out of his misery it seems

      • TiMsTeR1033

Id buy it just to wipe my ass with then send back to Gearbox and say its a gift for such great work! lol

        • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

It not worth touching my worthy asscrack

          • TiMsTeR1033

*hangs head in shame* never thought about that! might give me a std that game box could.

        • Hammersteyn

Gearbox isn’t worthy of my feces

    • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

UP to? Hahahahaha! That is funny. What lunatic would buy that heap of trash?

      • Hammersteyn

        A lunatic? hehe

  • CaptainNemo42

Strangely enough. I started gaming on a little know (currently) operating system called DOS. Games that got me hooked was games like Space, King’s and Police Quest. That was back in about 1988/89. Man, I learned how to type because of those games. Only got a Nintendo knock-off console a few years after that.

    • Hammersteyn

Martian Memorandum,LHX and Space Quest was my first games on a 286 PC running Dos.

      • CaptainNemo42

DOS games was the best ever! One of my fondest memories was playing the original Lemmings with my dad. We sat way past my bed time on some Friday nights, playing that addictive game with the annoying tunes. Ah, the nostalgia.

        • Hammersteyn

Point and click games like Day of the Tentacle kept my up very late at nights. No walkthroughs and no internet back then.

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Point and click? Ha! Nothing beats Myst!

        • TiMsTeR1033

I remember lemmings too. and Doom and quake 1 damn im getting old!

          • CaptainNemo42

            Yeah. We’re showing our age.

      • Spathi

Wtf, Martian Memorandum!! Was the first game I finished (proper game, not Alley cat kak). Only thing I really remember about that game is that you had to buy some chick flowers to see her in her nightie! Was a big deal for me as a young boy :D

        • Hammersteyn

I was amazed at the video rendering and scoffed at my NES

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

My first DOS game that I really remember was Scorched Earth. That was an epic game on our 386!

      • Hammersteyn

        Deathheads, everyone dies!

      • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

Scorched Earth taught me a helluva lot at a young age man. Power, arc levels, strategy. Made me a young soldier/tactician

        • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Indeed! And if you got fed up you just bought a super nuke and killed the whole screen (and the PC trying to “render” the “effects”)

          • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

            HAHAHAHA, sweet memories

    • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

Police Quest is still one of my favourite games.. I loved that

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

        I don’t think I ever played that

        • Hammersteyn

          GOG.com if you want to.

      • Happy Hamster

        It Rocked Monkey Balls

  • ElimiNathan

    NES – Contra

  • DieJason

Combat is the best multiplayer game ever. EVER.

Tanks, jets, biplanes. People, this is where Battlefield started.

  • TiMsTeR1033

I wouldnt buy that if I had a never ending money pile. I am glad to be in the days of great graphics and physics in games thank you! and for R520 bucks seriously now….. seriously

    • Hammersteyn

Collectors item I would think. But it can be an investment to. May be worth a lot more in a couple of decades or so.

      • TiMsTeR1033

perhaps, rather keep a playstation 1 for that, looks a lil nicer

  • Hammersteyn

I cant see if ET is in the pile of games…

    • TiMsTeR1033

      dude they buried those games

      • Hammersteyn

        Allegedly ;)

  • TiMsTeR1033

I remember Broken sword and how hard that game was at the goat if any one know what i mean lol

  • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

I am salivating here haha. Nice haul that.

What got me in to gaming was those original TV Games (Those famcon systems) and SuperMario Bros.

Also Excite bike, Circus Charlie and Paperboy. I miss the good old days.

    • Argentil

Yes, Paperboy. Forgot about that one.

    • TiMsTeR1033

excite bike was the shit! making ramps and all that. Paperboy was fun too :) breaking windows hitting dogs cars ect.

  • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

For me personally, the best thing to come out of the Video Game Evolution is the music …. Hell even 8-bit Tracks were awesome back in the day

    • Argentil

The Zero wing music is a great example (All Your Base). Anamanaguchi haven’t quiiite achieved those levels of driving awesomeness. Their Scott Pilgrim OST was their best one, imo.

      • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

I like Anamanaguchi, they do some cool tracks for the style.

Zero wing was great yeah, But the moon theme of Duck Tales stand as the pinnacle of 8-bit music imo

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

8-bit tracks are the best dude! Nothing better :)

      • Hammersteyn

        Megamans soundtrack was awesome.

        • TiMsTeR1033

give that to extasty junkies! rolf blow their minds!

  • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

So, if I mentioned cutting my teeth on Battletoads, how many of you would throw something in my direction? I mean other than OVG 0-O

    • TiMsTeR1033

battletoads! I was gonna say that but forgot it was called battle toads lol

      • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

Man, the HARDEST game I have ever played. Those pesky bloody logs nailed me an OVG more than a construction site in Dubai!

        • TiMsTeR1033

I played battletoads and double dragon combo lol was on space ship and could change the guys up. never found the orignal lol

          • Hammersteyn

            Original is twenty times harder.

          • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

            Totally. Level trauma…

        • Hammersteyn

The Snake level was balls as well.

          • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

            Remembers snake level… WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! 0-O

    • Argentil

So why haven’t MS made a battletoads game? It doesn’t even need to be a big-budget title.

      • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

I think there was a law passed after the game came out. I believe it was called the ‘in order to help facilitate the rehabilitation of a generation of gamers who suffered severe emotional trauma caused by speeding logs’ Act. Since then no company dare make another…

        • Argentil

Let’s be real here, any modern Battletoads would be much easier than the NES version. Game difficulty is hampered by this silly little thing called “Accessibility.”

          • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

VERY true. They’d add a ‘turn logs into marshmellows option.

          • Argentil

Or, worse yet, a “purchase a log crusher for $0.99″ option.

          • RinceTheWhiskyWithIce

            Oh gods, yeah…

    • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

LOOOOOVE battle toads, freaking hard as ass!!

      • TiMsTeR1033

now why cant they make something like this? game devs have forgotten battletoads

        • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

It’s too hard for this generation of gamers :(

        • Hammersteyn

          Because it’s not like COD

          • TiMsTeR1033

            then give em guns lol

          • Argentil

I don’t know why MS don’t just ask Twisted Pixel to make a BattleToads game and assign a smallish budget to the team. It;s mind-boggling why they AREN’T capitalising on these great IP.

      • Hammersteyn

        That level on the bikes!

        • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Man!! and roping down while dodging all sorts of debris and transforming into musical instruments lol

Weirdly the first game that got me into gaming was on the NES. English name of the game was Fly Dragon Boxing 3. It was in japanese and couldnt make out any story to the game lol, but somehow i still enjoyed it loads. After that was Mario Bros and then Ninja Turtles.

Not sure which one it was but it was a side scrolling one where you can go into the sewers etc etc… Those days games was so fun. Maybe im just getting too old now that im not fully into loads of gaming as before or…. life got more serious and that needed more of my attention.

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

You are never too old to enjoy games man :)

    • Hammersteyn

I also feel old when surveying the gaming landscape with online play, DLC, eSports, Motion Controls, etc. But playing a decent game like Last of Us reminds me that I will always enjoy games as long as games like these continues to be made.

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Yeah, it’s the games like that and Infinite that make gaming worthwhile still. And with so many retro style games coming from indie devs at least we aren’t too old yet.

        • Hammersteyn

Still got Megaman 9 on my PS3. I need to check if there is some more to download from the store.

      • CypherGate

True that. There are those rare gems that boosts your gaming morale back up and reminds you why you play games. Lets hope we start getting more great games!

  • Sminty

Already own the original one I had as a kid, along with a pong game, a racer game and my original commodore 64….looks like I win the 80′s ;)

  • brad coetzee

I remember we had one of those in our house when I was young. Even then, I thought the graphics were so bad it depressed me. Only because it looked nothing like our cartoons on tv. Anyway, child logic hey?

  • Rags

I won’t bid. Because I already have exactly the same :D

  • fred

Can you lend it to family and friends?

  • loftie

Very nice, nostalgia for maybe….2min, then put in cupboard in for 10 years

  • Johann

Ah the good old Atari, the first console I ever played on. Used to play the crap out of games like asteroid, planet patrol, gangster alley and breakout. Still wonder what happened to my console and all the games/controllers.

Does it need a day one internet patch?
