Fallout4

Fallout 4 is officially coming, and yesterday’s trailer has sent the internet into a tumult. Fans are tripping over themselves in glee, while deterrents are tripping over their bottom lips because the graphics aren’t good enough, and that Bethesda’s models look waxy and un-lifelike just as they have in every other Bethesda Software game ever made. Fallout 4 is one of the worst kept secrets in videogaming, with rumours of the game’s setting popping up years ago. One old rumour though, which seems to be align quite a bit with what we now know of the game, is a little disturbing, especially given today’s gaming climate.

The thing with Bethesda’s RPGs, whether you love and live them or not, is that they’ve allowed you to play as your hero – to carve out an identity of your own. It’s always been about choice. That may not be the case with Fallout 4. According to that old rumour, the game gives you a premade character, who happens to be male.

“In Fallout 4, mixing things up, we are making the game more ‘Story Based’ and the player character will finally talk, and narrate his storyline. At the beginning of the game, you create your character (You can only be a male in the main story),” says the old leaker, claiming to be a disgruntled former employee , via Destructoid. The same source says you can change gender once you’ve finished the game. Odd.

If this is true, it would certainly be an unwelcome move, given the current climate and the fact that Fallout has always given you options. I’d be pretty down, as I tend to play games of this sort as a fiery, chaotic neutral red-headed woman. I’d be upset, though I’d even buy the whole “it’s all about the narrative,” angle if this wasn’t a world that already includes Mass Effect, a great big sprawling RPG that featured full voice and story for both sexes.

Hopefully, given the drive for more diversity in gaming this is just a rumour, or that if it was once true, Bethesda’s seen fit to change that.

According to DToid, here’s the rest of the pertinent info gleaned from the months-old leak:

  • The map of Fallout 4 is about three times the size of Skyrim
  • Set in the year 2287, exactly 10 years after Fallout 3
  • Takes place in Boston
  • Xbox 360 and PS3 version will release later and run on the Skyrim engine (the teaser website had CSS mentions of both consoles)
  • You can import your Fallout 3 data that could have an impact on the story depending on your previous choices
  • PC version includes a “Classic Mode” that will feature a bird’s-eye view like the original titles
  • You can only play as a male in the main story, but can change gender after completing the story
  • PC / PS4 / Xbox One release date: October 2015
  • PS3 / Xbox 360 release date: December 2015
  • Will have five DLCs released over the next year
  • An expansion will be revealed at E3 next year, and released in October

Here’s that trailer again, because why the hell not.

Can’t say enough bad things about MadMax remake movie. That Furiosa was the new heroine for the set was unexpected. But yeah, a game that gives less choices will be less liked, you get what you plan for.

Well.. I have honestly never played a female character in any of the games that have the option. So I don’t personally have a problem with this. Additionally, if the story they want to tell requires a male protaganist, so be it. That is a dev decision and I don’t think we can argue about it until we’ve played the game.

Fair enough. I understand that point. If the story did not require a male protagonist and didn’t give us a female option then I’d be on your side. But we don’t know enough about the game to be going to war just yet.

I would think females gamers might care if you can create a unique male character but no female version.
Unless, of course, if the protagonist is going to be a pre-made, pre-determined character. Which would suck.

If female gamers care more about gender choice than a good bloody story that requires a male lead (with some element of characterisation), then those gamers don’t understand artistic license. And they should just give up playing games for games sake.

          • RinceTheElfRoot

            June 4, 2015 at 11:42

If a female gamer only has a choice to be a male in 99% of games because of ‘artistic license’ that says something about the ‘art’ being created and for whom.

          • SargonTheBatpandaOfTI5

            June 4, 2015 at 11:44

Agreed. But that isn’t the case. If it were, I’d think you’d need to be more sensitive. But that also shouldn’t stop artistic license on the other hand. To force a female gender choice on a developer when the story they want to tell requires (for whatever reason) a male is just as wrong as denying the female gender choice when the story does not require a specific lead.

          • RinceTheElfRoot

            June 4, 2015 at 11:45

The point is they always allowed you to choose. What are they doing now? Going back to the 80s when the idea of a gamer was some spotty male geek? we’re supposed to have progressed, not digressed.

          • SargonTheBatpandaOfTI5

            June 4, 2015 at 11:50

Again, if that were the case I’d be on your side. But they could also be constructing a specific narrative. We just don’t have enough information to make that call yet. Progress is also where artists are allowed to make art and not be bound by narrow societal boundaries or perspectives. 😛

          • RinceTheElfRoot

            June 4, 2015 at 11:51

Then why are you defending the idea if you are saying ‘could, could, could’? Defend it if you know what the story is 😛

          • SargonTheBatpandaOfTI5

            June 4, 2015 at 11:57

Throughout this thread I’ve only been cautioning against taking a stance yet until we know. If the story is a narrative driven piece of art that requires a male lead, then so be it. Don’t get upset. BUT if the game is generic and there is no reason WHATSOEVER to have a specific gender lead, then give us some equality and choice.

How is this not the logical position when there is a clear absence of information on the story?

      • RinceTheElfRoot

        June 4, 2015 at 11:48

Females probably. Opps, my bad. Games are only for men because the stories are almost ALWAYS with men because of artistic licence, right?

Except it is only true pertaining to the story, as per the leak, and according to the leak you can also change gender after the story.

So (barring this is all true of course) I kinda feel like, they have a specific story to tell, but won’t prevent you from exploring and realising your own story afterwards though, where you can be your own gender, etc.

It feels to me as though this article wasn’t objectively assessed, and knee-jerked a little.

          • SargonTheBatpandaOfTI5

            June 4, 2015 at 11:53

No. No. That’s not what I’m saying. Missing the point. I’m saying that if there is a narrative or artistic reason for having a set male (or FEMALE) lead (and the story requires it) then so be it. We should respect that. But if the character is generic and the story does not require a specific gender, then of course choice should be necessary.

Besides, I doubt your 99% is anywhere near accurate for modern gaming RPG-esque franchises.

          • RinceTheElfRoot

            June 4, 2015 at 11:54

99% modern gaming lead character female story, not female looking. Even Dragon Age’s choice of using a women doesn’t change the actual story. Now something like Remember Me, different 🙂 PS. And agree if the story calls for a male to e in the lead (like Witcher III).

          • SargonTheBatpandaOfTI5

            June 4, 2015 at 11:56

And in DA I applued the choice of gender because that is EXACLY true. You’re 100% correct. If there was no choice for a female gender in the new DA, I’d be on your side. BUT there are games where the narrative is crafted for a specific character or gender and to DEMAND a female lead IGNORES the realities of the narrative that the developer is trying to construct.

Go demand a female Geralt. See where that gets you. It’s a story. It’s a narrative. It’s crafted for specific reasons. To ignore that is folly. And we don’t yet know what Bethesda is trying to do with Fallout 4 yet so we really can’t get on the high horse yet.

            June 4, 2015 at 11:58

No. No. No. Free market capitalism with no social enforcement whatsoever is a sure fire way to ensure our extinction. Anyone who thinks differently is a fool. If the goal of a company is only to maximise profit with no sense of sustainability or social consciousness then say cheers now and enjoy the few decades you have left to spend your billions. Goodbye Amazon rainforest. Goodbye polar ice caps. Hello highest concentration of carbon dioxide ever seen… oh… wait… that one is already here. Right.

Don’t. Be. Naive. Marx and Engels certainly raise enough points to warrant a closer inspection of the great advances of the modern capitalist agenda.

That being said I’m not against companies making money. Of course not. But to do so without any social consciousness is reprehensible. And needs to be stopped in it’s bloody path immediately.

You said “sustainability of the company”. Of the company. Of the capitalistic company, and its own agenda to literally “maximi[s]e profits” and survival above all else.

Now go reread my comment where sustainability is CLEARLY about society, morality, the environment, etc. I.e. NOT just the company. But the proletariat as well.

Fair enough. If the game releases and it is absolutely clear that they could have done that then it will make for a very interesting discussion.

Part of me hopes that this isn’t the case, but part me is also glad they want to focus more on story.

Actually would prefer them sticking to a single gender and do it properly, other Fallout and Elder Scrolls games you play generic character with or without boobs.

If you do not do it properly like Mass Effect I do not see why to do it at all and is why so many games fall fall in the story department these days because the main character must be bland, generic and unoffensive.

The language used in the game is better than The Game of Thrones.

Have you noticed how well they made the facial expressions go with the incredible writing, besides the amazing character models. They managed to stay clear of uncanny valley baby oil Inquisition look.

Even the children are borderline fantasy with big noses but still stay real.

Lots of talent at CD Projekt Red.

What I particularly appreciate (and I can’t stress this enough) is how they don’t unnecessarily shrug or move their arms during conversation like most characters in games do. They have proper life-like movements.

Okay, with regards to the children…here’s my big complaint.
You can hear which ones are adult women they got to make the voices for the children so clearly and it really bothers me.

Less is more as they say. They nailed the body gestures perfectly. Even when Gerald would be talking to a crazy person, the camera would pause on him and he would do a tiny little shrug to show OK carry on with your sentence you crazy lunatic. No mo cap either, just animation.

There’s precedent. Fallout/Elder Scrolls have always had you playing as your created character. Tomb Raider has always been Lara’s story. The Witcher is about Geralt. That’s fine. Taking the choice away would suck.

Dragon Age 2 had a fixed character (but with whatever gender). Dragon Age 1 was free. So what is precedent for DA: I? Precedent shouldn’t restrict artistic licence for Devs that have a track record of really good games with a great immersive story.

Fallout 4 may be (yet unnamed lead protagonist’s) story. And may lead to Fallout 5, Fallout 6, and Fallout 7. I hope. 😀

I don’t really gel with the artistic licence thing. Yes, for some stories it is necessary to tell a story in a particular way, with a particular character, of a particular persuasion, gender, sex, shape, size, whatever.

This is a brand new story in a familiar universe. Any story here, that would focus on a single gendered/aged/sized/shaped/coloured character would be driven by choice, not necessity.

So, you would complain if the choice was to immerse a character in an established universe, rather than to keep it feeling generic. So adding another layer of story and immersion is bad because in the past it wasn’t there?

            That’s really counter-intuitive.

No, it IS possible to give players choice, and immerse the player in an incredible world – with a layered story. Once again, see Mass Effect.

            June 4, 2015 at 12:30

It’s possible, but then again it may not be the right choice. What if being a male character is part of the story? What if it’s integral? As pointed out by Sargon, it’s way too early to be raging about it. If it is a generic male character, then the rage is justified. If it’s not, and its central to the story, then there’s nothing to rage about. From this rumour, it sounds like the latter is more likely, but we’ll see.

As I said on twitter, caring about a character (the main character) is one of the most immersive things possible. And keeping it generic stifles a lot of the ability to do so. In ME it worked because they made everything about Shephard, the surname. That was intentional. But in this case that might not be possible.

            Time will tell.

Yeah the artistic license thing is a medium that people use far too often. But it is really something that shouldn’t be thrown away. It’s the reason scientists and artists were brutally oppressed by the church (all too recently). There is a place for this perspective.

But we also shouldn’t let it be co-opted when it isn’t appropriate. And I agree with you that it certainly would be driven by choice. The developers choice. When did we stop trusting them to craft narratives in their own universe? I mean.. do we really know enough yet to say that this is the wrong call?

It’s an interesting debate to be had, for sure. But shouldn’t we have the debate after we play the game and have considerably more information? The option (alleged) to change gender after the story certainly highlights an awareness of this issue (as Bethesda are sure to have).

            June 4, 2015 at 12:18

Yeah for sure. This is all very crazy speculation and rumour right now – and it’s entirely likely that Bethesda won’t be doing this. But what the topic is doing right now is leading to some good discussion.

Yes, DA2 got rid of the character choice, and that ruined immersion in my opinion. And I do believe they got criticized heavily for it.

I know that games are never 100% comparable, but some companies could at least look at what happened to others regarding certain choices before making the same mistakes themselves.
I’m not necessarily saying this is one of those cases, but it’s an example.

In The Witcher Geralt is the main character, should we be asking CD Projekt to give us the option to play as a female variant of the character? How would that work with in the games story/narrative?

I want to play Tomb Raider as a boy! …See what I’m getting at here?

Yes, Fallout in the past has given you that option, but if the narrative of the story requires a male protagonist then I don’t see the issue. Besides the rumour is after the main story you can get a sex change.

I personally don’t care about the gender options. They gave a perfectly acceptable explanation for their choice. I find the idea of writing an entire article about it to be a little strange though.

I’ve (in the post – not recently – I promise!) read some other gaming sites and scroll down to their comments section. And often I find very little of substance there. So I do appreciate the very passionate individuals that frequent this site. It makes my gaming news consumption even more interesting (and engaging/immersive). 🙂
