The PSP Go is failing – should Sony even try save it? Popular

PSP Go

Sony invented and released the PSP Go to help revitalise it’s flagging portable gaming division. The PSP was tired of getting smashed month on month by all the Nintendo DS versions and the PSP Go was going to be it’s saviour.

However not even the most pessimistic analyst could have predicted how absolutely pitiful the sales of the PSP Go would be.

In the first week of March the standard PSP sold 68 808 units in Japan while it’s upgrade barely managed to get 1 275 units out the door. Which means it was even outsold by the much aligned Xbox 360 in Japan.

However that’s not the worst part, the worst part is that Sony may not even be able to save the device.

The PSP Go’s abysmal sales figures can be directly contributed to two things.

  1. An absolutely idiotic price tag making it more expensive than the Xbox 360 and Wii and only $50 cheaper than a PS3 itself.
  2. No disk drive so you can’t play your PSP games on it.

They can obviously fix the first issue but the second one is a true killer and while we all hate to accept that we failed; on this occasion I think it would be acceptable for Sony to simply throw the PSP Go out and start again.

  • RSA-Ace

I wonder if the release of the PSPGo actually created an increase in PSP-3000 sales?

Maybe that was the plan. Get money from the ‘stupid’ people that actually buy the PSPGo and then also get more money from increased sales of the previous PSPs.

  • riezo

If the Go and the 3000, sold at the same price I would opt for the Go.

Sony you cant remove a feature then expect to ask more for the device.

IMO the Go actually competes with the Ipod Touch/I Phone, and it loses hands down to these platforms.

  • Fox1

Why didn’t they add HD graphics into it? What about mini blu-ray disc?

    +1 for FOX1

it has absolutely NO competitive advantage over any other handheld.

      Good point – I want BLU-MD discs!

will there be any remake of the psp go, maybe another psp go 2010 with advanced features like a camera?

    • http://www.lazygamer.co.za Gavin Mannion

I doubt it, I think Sony’s idea of digital distribution only is a few years to early
