Are you keen as I am on the NGP, Sony’s successor to the PSP? You know what you won’t need to get one?

A second job. Sony hasn’t forgotten the ruckus caused when they announced a $599 PS3, proclaiming that if you wanted one, you’d work harder to get one. Thankfully, this means they won’t be making a similar mistake when they get around to announcing a price for their coveted next generation handheld.

“I can’t talk about a definitive price at this stage. But since the very beginning we had a target in mind. So, when considering various features, we always had our price range in mind,” Sony president Shuhei Yoshida told Edge.

“There were elements that we found pretty cool, but had to set aside to remain on target. It’s a big lesson we learnt from the PS3. There’s no point putting everything you want into a device and doing the math later. We always had the price and consumer in mind. We had to sell something that people could buy.”

That doesn’t mean the device will be nearly as affordable as the PSP though; Yoshida went on to say that they “can’t sell the NGP for the same price as a PSP.”

Any of you want to hedge some bets on price? When the PSP launched in 2005, it hit retail stores at $249.00. I think the lowest we’ll see the NGP going for is $299, although it might be as high as $349. how much would you be willing to pay for portable gaming goodness?
