Are Sony prepping another version of the PS Vita?

While I’m slightly addicted to my PlayStation 4 I have yet to see any reason to ever own a PS Vita, or any PlayStation mobile, again. I get more than enough of a gaming fix on the iPad and iPhone and if I’m home I’d rather just use on of the proper gaming machines.

I’m not alone in this feeling with the PS Vita struggling outside of its regular power bases and consistently falling way behind Nintendo’s family of 3DS products.

However it looks like Sony hasn’t given up on its mobile option yet with images of a new trademark filing hitting the Internet this morning.

There was no name linked to the device, other than “Mobile gaming device” but it’s quite obvious that it is another version of the PlayStation Vita.

With some nice possible improvements such as (* for the wild guesses)

  • HDMI Out
  • Secondary shoulder triggers
  • SD Card slots*
  • Sim Card*

I’ve not got much interest in getting it myself but would the inclusion of an SD Card slot and those triggers be enough to tempt you?

The reaction of Neogaf is all over the place, some people are extremely excited while others don’t see anything more than a slight upgrade.

While others such as Dualshockers are claiming that it’s all entirely fantasy as the trademark is simply to do with moving the buttons slightly and has absolutely nothing to do with adding any new ports or triggers.

While it looks like Dualshockers are likely the most accurate here it is interesting to take a look at the reactions of the community and see what people are hoping for.

Does anyone know where I can pick up a memory card for a PSP? My father in law gave my daughter an old PSP and I’d like to see if I can get the damn thing running

I would presume BT Games would be your best bet

*cray* ;-p Just for you Mnr Cruywagen. Your local Trader’s Square in Pretoria will have what you need (I think) at better prices. They’ll probably also offer a version full of game images as well but you can just buy the memory stick. Damn Sony not using industry standard hardware.

Indeed, I REFUSE to support Sony and the silly non standard hardware

(And I actually used the cruy intentionally)

Thanks for the traders tip, I agree, they might be the best bet. Although I don’t like that place at all

I know you used the cruy intentionally and I agree with you about that place, horrible but they’re often the only type of place that has what you need.

Nintendo “DS” all the way? You surely mean “3DS”?

oVg might have something to say about the value of handhelds. I do see more value now that cross-platform is so much more prevalent but I’m not rushing out to buy one.

Eh the vita has quite a couple of games I want to play on it, mainly the wealth of anime dungeon crawlers. Still not enough to make me buy one though. The mobile market sits mainly in Japan and Asia for handhelds, so honestly don’t think they are that interested in western markets but will release it for the fanboys who will buy it anyway lol.

What is the point of a refreshed PSVITA or even a new device when there isnt much support for the current one in the first place? It makes me angry cause ive ALWAYS wanted a PSVITA, but never truly found games that interest me cause the support for it is just purely terrible.

I have one of the gen 1 Vita’s with the proper OLED screen. Not some whack LCD screen that gives you grey instead of a white screen.

Not sure why the Vita doesn’t get more love. I spend more time gaming on my Vita than I do on my PS3. I love it, and have never regretted getting it.

If you ever want to revisit old school epic RPGs then the PS Vita is the console to do it on. The main reason I bought one. I have games like FF7, FF8, FF9, Grandia, Front Mission 3, Xenogears and Chrono Cross just waiting to be played and that thought excites me immensely.

With the PS3/360, the 360 did lower base price, but hidden markups in proprietary WiFi/HDD storage vs the PS3 had a higher base price but had completely standard hard drives, included WiFi and no hidden costs. The online crowd was deafening about preferring the lower base price and hidden mark ups. I don’t think that’s what they really wanted, I think it was just some runaway tech industry idiocy. But Sony followed suit with the Vita and offset a lower base price with markups on proprietary memory cards.
