Kaz Hirai Rubbishes 3DS Technology

Nintendo’s 3DS had a really good showing at E3. It caused stampedes of gamers trying to get in to the long queues to play the device. By all accounts it works – and it works really well.

Despite that, and despite not actually seeing or using the device himself, Sony’s Kaz Hirai has downplayed the technology, calling it imprecise.

Speaking in an interview with Sankei Biz, the Sony executive said "In in-house research, naked eye 3D for portable machines is not high and there are presently limits for it."

His comments seem to indicate that Sony won’t be following the same route – and the PSP2 won’t be a 3D enabled console. Naturally though, Hirai seemed a little more upbeat with regards to Sony’s own 3D technology. “With such things as a strengthened 3D-compatible software lineup, we aim to increase hardware sales,” said Hirai of the PS3.

As a side note, if you’re unaware – you can try Sony’s 3D gaming – as well as Playstation Move – at Sandton City. The 3D gaming is neat, but I’m not yet convinced it’s worth the financial outlay just yet. Move is cool too, but not as accurate as I’d imagined, although that may have a lot to do with the setup and calibration there.

My opinion of 3D gaming is much the same as with controller-free gaming, it is an unnecessary fad, that detracts from the simple pleasure of gaming. In addition, the real potential for epileptic seizures amongst kids are being practically ignored.

Just remember my words of caution when reports of kids with serious epileptic fits hit the news stands and the gaming industry is crippled by lawsuits. :face:

I thought the Move was pretty accurate with the Archery game

Is anyone else tired of Sony trying to bring down their competitors by hurling insults at them? PS3/ PSP commercials, E3 presentations, downplaying the kinect and the 3DS. I have little to no respect for Sony and their executives for this reason only. I believe Bob Dylan put these type of people into perspective best. “Cares not to come up any higher, but rather get you down in the hole that he’s in.” Please grow up Sony because I hate to hate you.

Nah most of us just laugh it off just like we laugh off Reggie and Greenburg taking the piss out of Sony just as much. Fanboys are usually just blind to the stupid things their own favourite console execs say. I hope your not one.

Sony should talk about the ps3/ move/ psp and their push on 3d gaming and the advantages to that and what their systems are capable of and the new things they can do instead of talking down on the compitition. Its just childish and seems a bit desperate to me. Of course the competing companys do this to a certain extent as well, it is a common sleazy business tactic after all. It is just completely unneeded, very off putting, and done in bad taste.
