Why does The Last of Us remastered exist?

I’ve come to realise that I’m a selfish jerk. Being a PlayStation 3 owner who’s already played The Last of Us, I’ve been one of the many moaning about the game being re-released as a remastered version. I want new games, not rehashes of stuff I’ve already played. But The Last of Us Remastered isn’t for me; it’s for the scores of brand new PlayStation owners and converted fans.

Sony had a look at PSN data, and found that the majority of PS4 owners hadn’t played the PlayStation 3’s swansong from Naughty Dog, which is why they Greenlit a remaster mere months after the game’s release. It had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that they had so few first party titles lined up for the PS4 or that they love the smell of money. Nothing at all.

“The Last of Us is considered one of the most significant titles of the last console generation, winning countless awards. It would be almost unfair for all our new fans to never play a game like this,” SCEE’s UK product manager Josh Walker told MCV.

“We’ve looked at PSN data and can see a huge proportion of PS4 players haven’t experienced The Last of Us yet.”

Many of that huge proportion are new to the PlayStation  side of life, having moved over from the Xbox 360 or the Wii. Many still are new to gaming as a whole, having plonked down a couple of hundred dollars in a product they weren’t even sure they’d like or use.

Those people will now have the opportunity to play one of the greatest games ever made, or one of the most overrated – depending on who you ask. It’s coming on July 29 for North Americans, and August 1 for everybody else. It’ll be 1080p, with suggestions that it’ll run at a glorious 60 frames per second too.

i agree, completely uninterested in the remasters like Tomb Raider and TLOU. Played ’em, loved ’em, not going to play again.

That said, I missed the Metro games on 360, so i’ll be quite happy to pick up the Metro Redux on next-gen instead of playing the older versions.

Also played a few of those HD Collections on PS3 because i never owned a PS2. (of course, backwards compatibility would have solved that problem anyway)

So it works both ways, I guess.

The Older versions are Hideous on the 360, The Engine and Games were built for PC, and Ported To Consoles, With the new Generation, you should get a decent Visual Experience with those… Of course, The Real Comparison will be between the New Gen versions and a PC built for the same price range….

I agree, I’ll probably do the same. I’ll get Metro Redux some time this year, but for now my focus is on Destiny!

    You’re a selfish shellfish :/

I don’t have a problem with them doing this, I just don’t understand the people who’ve already played it on PS3 also getting it for PS4.

Shudup your face. You shut up right now!

I’m one of those people who didn’t own a PS3. This is one of the games that would convince me to buy a console. The only reason I didn’t buy the console when it came out on PS3 was because I knew it was pretty much at the end of the console’s lifecycle.

People like new and better. If they can’t get the new then it has to be better at least. I still can’t explain Call of Duty which is never new nor better.

Anyway, The Last of Us was a good game from my understanding, never played it, and it’s getting a paint job. A lot of good games that come out at the end of a consoles life, you just wish it could have looked better.
So The Last of Us remastered is for all those wishing it looked better and to all the Xbox 360 users now on PS4.

I played GTA 5 and all I could think about is when is the PC version coming out. So just because I played GTA 5 on Xbox 360 doesn’t mean I’m not going to get it on PC when it comes out.

the only issue i have about the TLOU Remaster is that they want to show off how nice it looks, so the trailers have LOADS of spoilers for people like you.

they seem to be targeting people who’ve already played it, so if you haven’t, accept that the game is awesome, and don’t watch any trailers.

Yes for this reason I have been completely avoiding trailers and any/all discussion about the game.. so I’m going into it completely blind.

I got the PS4 Tomb Raider remastered version for my birthday, but that was (a) because the missus thought I needed a game and (b) because I hadn’t played the PS3 version yet. It’s an awesome title, and I’m glad I got to play it on the PS4.

I probably won’t get the Last of Us or GTA 5 HD versions because I already own them for PS3, and as much as I enjoyed them, R1200 is a hardsell to double-dip.

I bought the remastered versions of Shadow of the Colossus and ICO for PS3 because I didn’t play them on PS2. There is definitely a market for this type of thing.

Plus I think there is a market for people wanting to buy it for future nostalgic reasons. That is why I might fork out for the remastered version of the ME trilogy when it comes out.

I won’t have to worry about Origin pulling support or anything. It would work when I am 70 on a dusty old PS4 with an HDMI to FVCF (future video cable adaptor) connected to a 4 meter 3D TV. All this to show the grand kids the glory of hearing about the Commander’s favourite shop on the Citadel.

    It will be glorious…

Lack of backwards compatibility anyone? It all makes sense now. $$$

They are improving the visual effects and textures.

You won’t get that by running an old PC game on a better rig.

Yawn. It’s pretty simple actually. Setting aside how many people haven’t played it from last gen. There’s the small matter of the ICE team being located at Naughty Dog, and being responsible for SDK refinement. If I were Sony, I’d want ND working on the new hardware as soon as possible. What better way than a game that was critically and technically brilliant.

would probably get less criticism if they were remastering games from a few years past who really need the update rather than last year’s stuff.

im really dissapointed that nothing has been added to the game. add some new content and tweaks if you’re going to want to persuade ps3 players to pick it up, you’d sell more copies. They could make the changes and added content option too.
