Why are ModNation Racers sales in the toilet?

ModNationRacers

According to the first European sales numbers coming in ModNation Racers sales are worryingly low.

Low as in only 50 000 copies across Europe in its first week and the PSP version selling a mediocre 9 800 units.

The game has received a huge marketing budget and by all accounts the reviews have been positive about the game so why the low sales?

We will have our review up soon but already I have seen Nick complaining about the incredibly slow load screens, which is something that has already been widely reported.

A games first weeks sales don’t matter that much in the great scheme of things but it is obviously a little worrying, the game is being released in America this week and hopefully the sales will increase substantially after that.

With the game being heavily focussed on user created maps it is obviously hugely important that is has a large and loyal following.

Well I would love to buy Modnation but I will postpone the purchase due to the following:

    1. I dont have an access at home, so I would be missing out on a large part of the package and appeal.

    2. I dont believe games that are made on the “Play, Share, Create” theme should retail at the same price of other AAA single player games because you feel inclined to purchase more DLC, costing more.

    3. The price would prevent mom from buying little Timmy a cart racer with dolls on the cover for so much when she can purchase a realistic racer like NFS Shift for half the price.

Oh and the PSP game has received mediocre reveiws and apparently it lacks substance.

I will get the game, as soon as the price, or maybe a GoTY is released. As I did with Little Big Planet.

Forgot to mention that many people will opt for either Split/Second or Blur, more or less the same release window.

I can’t buy it because I am planning on buying a Logitech G25 or G27 wheel, maybe when it goes for R299 I will pay.

@Riezo you don’t need to buy any DLC, LBP is great and worth the price.

I’m not too clued up on this title, but by the sounds of it, it’s pretty much like Trackmania Nations… Which has been doing the community content gig for ages. You can make your own tracks, cars, paintjobs, etc.

Also Trackmania Forever is free (there are a few versions you can buy, with added features etc. aswell as there is a DS version). But i think that kinda nailed the community racing scene long before Modnation came around.

Played the demo and the racing is not that good actually , and i’m not in the mood for creating tracks. It should have been a R200(20 EURO) PSN download.

and not being the creative type, I would rather go for Split/Second or Blur

The load times really are atrocious and the game difficulty ramps up very quickly making it extremely difficult and frustrating to advance through the Challenge Races. The designers also chose to link the create track items to race victories so if you cannot advance you will never have full access to the full design pallet. I do not recommend this game for children – my son has already given up on it.

Loading times are pretty hectic – I’m still coping with it. Motorstorm 1 built up my resistance for long load times quite a bit… I’m just at the point where all of a sudden the racers are really fast and if you mess up you lose.

Linking of the track items to race victories and challenges is fine though. LittleBigPlanet did the same thing and it work really well. They need to give you an incentive to want to finish the game.

I agree about the kids thing – It’s just a little too hard with all the drift, tricks, weapon and boost – which is all fine for a ‘gamer’ but definitely not for a kid.

I’m capped at the moment but I really think the whole major thing about the game is the online portion. I’ve seen what happened to LBP with it’s online content and it was pretty amazing.

I bought the game and honestly, it isn’t short than awesome. The racing is pretty realistic and the controls are tight. My only problem here is the loading, but I was used to it from other games. The creativity is outrageous, even if you do not have the talent to create, you can download them. I believe this is one of those games that has been taken lightly. It is a shame when you compare some othe mediocre games geting over a million copies sold and triple AAA games staying on the shelf.
It is the gamer who decides what games will have success over others (not actually reffering to quality but sales)

I have ModNation Racers and much prefer it to Mario Kart Wii. Really, the loading times are only slow when you start the game up, after, the loads are about 20 secs. They have also just done server maintenance, making the online much faster. As for the difficulty, its a kart game! The controls are simple, and the only levels in career that caused me trouble were the last 2 tracks. I really dont know why this has got poor sales, its one of my favourite games ever.

I bought this game and its just amazing! Low sales bother me only because it might hinder futer developers to be sound “Ground Breaking” in there game making. I seriously get lost for hours in making new Karts, Guys, and levels. The possibilitys are sooooo endless. Hands down my favorite game to date. Load time is long at times and the cheaters pi$$ me off but I’m hearing Sony banning them left and right from PSN and I love it! You guys need to pick this up!

Gaming Consoles are for quick game play and nothing more. If you want to make a game where users can create 60% – 90% of it’s content then PUT IS ON THE PC!

LittleBigPlanet disagrees with you since it sold nearly 4 million copies and i dont even know how many millions of levels were created. You dont need to create any yourself it has a decent single player and you and your friends can just keep downloading new tracks every single day for free.

I don’t think this game is too hard for kids, I’m 11 and I’ve beaten the career 100% in about 2 weeks of playing
