Watch Kratos playing with his one-eyed monster

I’m probably in the minority here, but I wasn’t exactly enamoured with God of War III. Sure, it was goddamned beautiful to look at, but compared to its predecessor – one of the last great games for the PlayStation 2 as it neared the end of its life cycle – it just didn’t compare. Tired gameplay and a hokey story dragged the whole thing down, in my opinion.

In fact, the PSP-bound Ghost of Sparta released the same year was a better game. With that disappointment in mind, I really hope that Sony Santa Monica makes amends with the next God of War – though given the fact that it’s still Kratos and there’s some ham-fisted multiplayer, I’m not sure it’s happening.

Still, it does look damned pretty. In this developer diary for God of War : Ascension you’ll get to see everyone’s favourite Greek anti-hero slice the HECK out of a giant Cyclops’ (Or Megalops as the developers are insisting) face. Awesome.

Game’s out, exclusively for the PS3, in March.

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
