The PSN’s top games of 2011 Getting There

PSNtop10

Microsoft’s generally pretty forthcoming with list of how well digital titles perform on their Xbox Live service. Sony’s a little less so – so we rarely get to see how well games are doing on the PSN – but Sony has provided a list of the ten best-selling PSN games and downloadable content on the service. what’s come out on top? The answer might surprise you.

Here are the top 10 best-selling PSN Games of 2011 (digital games only, not full PS3 games):

  1. Tetris
  2. Resident Evil 4
  3. Infamous Festival of Blood
  4. Back to the Future: The Game – Full Series
  5. Dungeon Hunter: Alliance
  6. Castle Crashers
  7. Limbo
  8. Battlefield 1943
  9. Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection
  10. Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012

Tetris? TETRIS! Look, I know the game is an example of genius design, but why the heck is it still so damned popular? I thought people only still played it on mobile devices because it gave them something to do whilst on the toilet. I’m also not particularly happy about the re-release of Resident Evil 4 being there. Sure, it’s a great game (one of my favourites from the last gen) but it’s a horrible, scaled up, piss-poor port that Capcom’s trying to peg as an “HD” remake. I’d also hoped Limbo would have featured higher, but at least it’s in the top ten. I haven’t actually had a chance to try out Festival of Blood…but I like vampires (real vampires – not that sparkly nonsense) so I’m keen to give it a go. What PSN games did you play last year that seem to be missing?

Below are the top 10 Paid Downloads:

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops First Strike
  2. Call of Duty: Black Ops Escalation: Content Pack 2
  3. Call of Duty: Black Ops Annihilation: Content Pack 3
  4. MLB 11 The Show Road to the Show Training Points
  5. FIFA Soccer 12 Premium Gold Pack
  6. Call of Duty: Black Ops Rezurrection: Content Pack 4
  7. Angry Birds (PlayStation Mini)
  8. FUT – Premium Gold Pack
  9. MLB 10 The Show Road to the Show Training Points
  10. FIFA Soccer 12 Premium Gold Jumbo

Weird that angry birds is considered DLC and not a “game,” but no real surprises otherwise; Call of Duty reigns supreme.

Have Sony released the breakdown of purchases and PS Plus free downloads?  I know that we pay for PS Plus, thus the free games are paid for, but many of us, and I am often one, basically DL the games to ensure that we get our free stuff.  That may skew the results some as I remember BTTF, was one of the free DLs a couple of months back.

No; this include PS+ downloads – so you’re right the stats are skewed and a little fishy.

Whoa, that was a suprise. I think that a lot of these results have someting to do with the avg age of gamers. So 35, there or there abouts, most of them folk know tertis, so its some kind of nostalgic purchase, might also be for their kids to play. RE 4, well I can understand that one being a RE fan. This is also one of the few or only PS2 ports. The rest seem a bit dodge to me, except for 1943 which was a freebee after EA / Dice cocked up their apparent Buy B3 and get 1943 for free, so this one is also suspect. Where are the “we’re sorry for f….ing up the PSN” free games like Ratchet and Clank, Infamous etc. You all remember Feb To April Last year, don’t you. LOL. Now if you really want a winner, port the old classics across, stuff like the Doom series, Fear Effect, Champions of Norath, Descent, Original “Inbred and Undead, hail to the King Baby” and so on. Them old classics with their pixels are still worth a go even with today’s gazillion meg processors and GU.
