Not-bad

It’s out globally next week Friday; one of the current generation of console gaming’s great swansongs – Naughty Dog’s apocalyptic The Last of Us. It’s been getting glowing praise from just about everywhere. Just about. Here’s how its being viewed by critics.

OPM – 10/10: As a showcase for what Sony’s seven-year-old machine is capable of, there’s really nothing else to touch Naughty Dog’s latest. When such a talented developer hits these creative, narrative and technical heights, the result is a game that wouldn’t look out of place smuggled into PS4’s launch lineup. The acting is more believable than LA Noire’s hi-tech gurning. There are sneaky set-piece excursions that outdo even Metal Gear Solid 4 at its best. And tying it all together is an utterly mesmerising world instilled with a seamless sense of time and place. This is a work of art in which amazing sights and sounds fuel an emotionally draining, constantly compelling end of days adventure.

CVG – 10/10: The Last of Us is a remarkable achievement, and one of those rare games that you never want to end as you approach the finale. It tells a moving story that will linger in your mind long after the credits have rolled, but never loses sight of the fact that it’s a video game, not a film. It’s a masterful marriage of storytelling and game design, and easily Naughty Dog’s finest moment.

Destructoid – 10/10: The Last of Us‘ cold open, easily among the most gripping introductory sequences a videogame has offered, lets us know exactly what we’re in for. In just the opening minutes of Naughty Dog’s genuinely emotional adventure, I was amused, excited, scared, and saddened. The Last of Us is possessed of a certain magnetic power, able to make one laugh, to shake, and to cry, all the while aware that one state will transition to another with pitch perfect subtlety.

Edge – 10/10: Naughty Dog has delivered the most riveting, emotionally resonant story-driven epic of this console generation. At times it’s easy to feel like big-budget development has too much on the line to allow stubbornly artful ideas to flourish, but then a game like The Last Of Us emerges through the crumbled blacktop like a climbing vine, green as a burnished emerald.

Eurogamer – 10/10: At a time when blockbuster action games are sinking into a mire of desperate overproduction, shallow gameplay and broken narrative logic, The Last of Us is a deeply impressive demonstration of how it can and should be done. It starts out safe but ends brave; it has heart and grit, and it hangs together beautifully. And it’s a real video game, too. An elegy for a dying world, The Last of Us is also a beacon of hope for its genre.

Gamespot – 8/10:The Last of Us is a singular adventure that looks the downfall of humanity in the eyes and doesn’t blink

GiantBomb – 5/5: The Last of Us is not simply Uncharted with zombies, but it couldn’t exist without Naughty Dog having made Uncharted first, either. It’s a dark adventure, one rarely filled with laughs or joy. There are bitter pills to swallow along the way, and nothing is taken for granted, not even characters. People live, people die. Sometimes it’s fair, sometimes it’s not. It’s still a zombie game, but a sobering one. Take a deep breath.

IGN – 10/10: Its unrivaled presentation in particular sets the bar even higher than the Uncharted trilogy already did, and its writing, voice acting and layered gameplay combine to create what is very easily the game to beat for Game of the Year 2013.

NowGamer – 8.5/10: The Last Of Us is special. Not in an arty-farty ‘oh-the-story-is-so-deep’ kind of way, but in that it doesn’t cater to common tropes, it simply does what it wants to do – popular consensus be-damned. For that alone it deserves your attention.

Polygon – 7.5/10: There are hints of a nuanced message in The Last of Us, but convention wins out too often to easily find them. Naughty Dog commits to a sombre tone that affects every piece of the game for better and worse. It achieves incredible emotional high points about as often as it bumps up against tired scenario design that doesn’t fit its world. Survival in the post-apocalypse requires compromise, but The Last of Us has given up something vital.

Videogamer – 10/10: he Last of Us succeeds in the same way as the best movies do, challenging you more than you’ll ever expect, demanding that you think and discuss it weeks after it resolves. The fact I had the urge to pick it up again almost instantly is just added acclaim it has more than earned.

That’s an unprecedented number of perfect scores – barring the quite jarring 7.5 from Polygon, and Gamespot’s 8. I’ve come to learn to not trust waves of perfect scores; reviewers seem to be caught in the hype themselves – and the real critical consensus tends to come later.  Nor do I believe a perfect score means a perfect game  – but that’s a different discussion completely. However, the verdict is almost unanimous; The Last of Us is something special – and something you very probably want to play.

The Last of Us will infect your PlayStation 3 on June 14.

I don’t trust perfect scores either, but I don’t know , this game is something else and seems to possess something I can’t quite put my finger on. Whatever flaws this game has I strongly believe it won’t detract from the experience in any way …. Can’t wait till next week anymore…..The excitement keeps building up

Hype will never save a bad game. With so many “perfect” scores, Last of Us will be, at worst, a amazing game.

I’m ready to ramp up the difficulty, turn up the volume, turn off the lights and immerse myself in this beautiful world full of shit.

Well, im also not one to trust perfect scores..the hype gets the better of common sense. Although, as everyone says the worst that could happen is instead of it being the game of all games it will just be an amazing game.

Lets hope it is for the R600 + price tag on it.

It sounds like a great game but I find it hard to get excited about a zombie games. Might get it when it’s cheaper.

But I must say if a game is 10/10 that means it has no flaws or bugs.

But glad to see Naughty Dog turning out another game even if it’s not quite to my taste.

They are part of the game, and not the exclusive enemy you face. Unless when you define “zombie” game as a game with zombies in it at some stage, then a lot of games have that same status.

I’m epically against kids… damn they grate my nipples. Xmen 3 – ruined, Ultraviolet – ruined, Underworld 4 – ruined, etc etc etc… Why do people insist on having child heroes? My favourite is hunger games… a 16 yr old squirrel hunting WINNER? Sure… I grew up when Jean Claude Van Damme/Sly Stallone etc were running through cities/jungles evading being hunted by people and having to defend the fact that it was possible. But in 2013 it’s possible for a 16yr old girl to do it… *sigh* rant over.

Nothing wrong with Cabin in the woods. It is a light comedy with a huge budget for the pop corn munchers.

The Road is not a political film. It is a very simple film that taps into your deep dark reptilian brain. You will be saying to yourself “I would do that, I would say that, I would do the same” Once Humans are sent back to the dark ages of pure primal survival.

EXACTLY, why do we always have to place fucking zombies into these things, or turn it into an action film.

No Zombies, no outbreak, no zombie dogs, no no no no. Tired of that shit. No crazy Fuel guzzling Australians, no Water World with Disney Undertones.

It is what would happen in the REAL world. That is why it is depressing.

I read a lot of Sci-fi and I must agree with you. The best books, the most reaching stories, the ones that touch the most are the most realistic ones.

Movies are main stream, for people not like me. And I suspect you.

I do not think you can get 10/10

Name one, that two weeks after you got it and gave it 10/10 you still think it is 10/10

Master of Orion 2, the game I have played the most by far (Civ1,2,3 as well) is perhaps a 7 or 8. It has flaws. It has character.

You have a point, but I think its about how you feel after completion, not after two weeks (unless completion takes you two weeks, but you get what I’m saying)

Yeah, which I still do not get “Skyrim Hatred” that I have seen. People spent 100 hours playing a game they then raged about? Crap.

And yes, I have seen the arguments on this and other websites.

I have yet to complete a game of Enemy unknown. I get bored. But I wait a few weeks and start again. I am having fun. That counts.

My XCOM is currently at 45 hrs after 2.5 weeks, still loving it!

Never played it or in fact any platformer beyond Moon Patrol.

I will take your word on it, especially if the impact is that far reaching.

Do you think the time in your life when you first played made a difference in that determination? I mean, as a 13 year old (for example) or a 23 year old you would view the game differently.

Also, 23 years later, the game gives you great memories. WIN

Original, two floppy pirates. From 1988. I would give that 10/10.

Getting Duke rank with all four nations on Swashbuckler? Now that was in game satisfaction.

This might be a little random, but talking about exclusives… why is it that the PS get’s locked exclusives and the XBox gets temporary exclusives… couple examples, God of War, Infamous vs Xbox Ninja Gaiden which was even made BETTER for the PS… Or do Xbox’ers just have crapper exclusives like Gears of Bore? I think I might turn on Xbox, after being an avid supporter and stick with PC and try out the new PS4…

You forgot Bioshock and Mass Effect. The only two titles that made me spend my PS3 savings on an XBOX.

Well they got their early install base. Fool me once…

Played the first one (Bioshock), wasn’t terribly impressed 😛 As for Mass Effect, I played the first one on the Xbox (hated it, on the xbox I mean, think I’m too old to play “Shooters” on the xbox, need my mouse and keyboard) and then got the second one on the PC (DREAM!), still struggling to finish the 3rd. The second one was just toooooo epic! 🙂 mmmmmmiranda 😉 hehe I was going to say, they are across platforms aren’t they? That’s my point, exclusives STAY exclusive on PS, not so for the Xbox?!

Half of God of War 3 is repeated when…Uncharted 1 is mediocre with most horrible shooting mechanics ever seen in a third person shooter. GT5 has no culture compared to Forza. Each side has their own share of good exclusives but don’t fall for the hype. On the same token, I despise Fable on Xbox 360. And then there’s the massive updates that PS3 exclusives require. GoW Ascension, and Uncharterd 3 have updates of a 1gig. GT5 has updates of 5gigs, whereas when I popped Forza Horizon into my Xbox the other day, it only required a 15mb update.

PS: I found DmC and Tomb Raider to be experiences just as enjoyable as Unchaterd and GoW3.

Interesting summary 🙂 I must say, I watched a friend play God of War 2 and it looked truly epic, maybe they overdid it? I’ve never been a fan of racing games to be honest. I play action games on the ‘sole and FPS, Strategy and RPG on the PC. Assassin’s Creed I loved until this AC3 debacle, totally killed it for me. Can’t really comment on the updates but that is a shocker… BF3 on PC can be a killer for that too. HAs anyone ever noticed how whenever you REALLY want to have a quick game of something on PC, either Steam, Uplay, or what have you needs to do a 10-20 minute update? 🙁 Bleakness.

If action games are your thing then you should look at a PS3. They are going for cheap now. Trade-in some Xbox games and get the Uncharted collection. Hopefully there’ll be a price drop at E3.

I’ll check it out, I was quite keen on a PS3 for the God of War series anyway, perhaps Infamous and Uncharted too. Perhaps I’ll wait out the Ps4 though, heck, I’ve waited this long 😛

Primarily PC, but yes, I do own a PS3, PS2, PS, PSP, Vita, Gamecube. Does the fact that I have played the games he’s talking about discredit me?

Uncharted 1 was very good, excellent as an early gen title. Uncharted 2 was the best of the series.
GT5 has no culture compared to Forza? Wow, that’s a terribly one-sided statement. GT5’s community is wonderful, and I think the use of the word ‘culture’ is a huge mistake here because this is one area GT is better at compared to Forza. GT-Academy anyone? Nearly 2 decades of lineage? Forza is better in certain areas, and GT is better in others.
God of War 3 was my favourite of the series. Personally I didn’t think DMC was great, I preferred the older Devil May Cry games. It’s a good game, lots of style, and the gameplay captures the essence of the original series.

Sony have more actual exclusives because they own the studios making the games. The Xbox games you’re referring to are third-party, MS cut a deal with the publishers to secure timed exclusivity.

Ja, the internet are really questioning that one, but you know, maybe the game’s pacing and mechanics didn’t agree with his personal tastes. I found the review vague in every aspect aside from the part about falling into cliches. Even when referring to the gunplay being a stressful last resort (paraphrasing), I believe it was a design choice to increase tension at those points. I think the author just didn’t know what he didn’t enjoy the game that much and couldn’t put it into words. I doubt he was bribed, very unlikely. He’s either biased, or just not sure about why he didn’t like it, in my opinion.
