Sony’s “Yay Buttons” Web Page Takes Massive Stab At Kinect’s Lack Of Buttons

We already posted a little earlier about the fantastic “sensitive fireman” campaign that Sony is running for the Playstation Move, but after further inspection, Reece, the reader who sent us the links found an interesting page called “Yay Buttons”.

The page is an interactive flash animation that shows only a Move controller and instructions to press a button, what happens after that is a long bout of hilarious fun-poking at Microsoft’s new button-free, controller-free motion sensing device.

As more and more button presses are done, little bubbles pop up on the screen to tell you all the benefits of having buttons. These range from entering cheat codes to basic requirements of gaming like multitasking, platforming, zooming and so on.

The gloves really come off a little while in though, when bubbles start popping up explaining how important the pause button is. “What if I could just shout ‘pause’?” it asks, taking a stab at Kinect, only to explain a likely scenario where a friend would constantly screw around with you by shouting “pause” every time he walks past the room.

They also go back to the old KB joke of using your fingers as a gun, and even make sure to chuck in a few “pews!” as well.

Kinect is pushing for something new, while the Move really is just a blatant (but improved) version of what the Wii was doing to begin with, so while it is funny to watch them poke fun at Microsoft by sticking to true and tested techniques that work, they didn’t exactly think of it first now did they.

If only Nintendo came up with a response… but we know they are too busy pouring rainbows and making kittens out of candy to do something like that.

A man can only dream. Go and play with it yourself, link right here.

Thanks again to Reece for the awesome heads-up.

Europe gets the demo disc and America gets the Sports Champions game.

The Europe one is only EUR 60 – I think and the America one is $100 (which is ~EUR 80 with a direct conversion). So Europe is EUR 20 cheaper than USA at the sacrifice of a game. Which I think is fair because it’s better to save the money and spend it on a game you want.

thanks RSA-ACE i kinda understand your point maybe i’m living in a dream world as for once i thought there was a product launching in SA at a reasonable price point with a game to boot to drive the market as that would be the perfect starter kit but alas i have to come back to reality. R680 for the starter kit and full game i would think that’s reasonable price point when you looking for penetration

@al360: Yeah R700 with a game I would’ve been happy with (especially since I’m getting Sports Champions). But it terms of Move doing well they did the best thing. Consumers will be confused and think it’s really cheap (which it is) so they will buy it. I thought it was very smart.

Not entirely true, they just didn’t implement theirs early enough.

It was funny man you seem so butthurt. I mean its funny that you seem to hit on move being an improve version of wii. But you completely ignore the fact that for Kinect can be considered a improved version of the EyeToy. If you see sony’s vision and commercials for eyetoy at the time you would see that it that it was a lot similar to kinect. Now sony probably did not follow through with it because the they figured out a person needs “BUTTONS” to really experience a game with any depth.

You do make a good point about the Kinect being an improved eyetoy, although MS are trying to implement it quite different, but still very fair point.

At the same time though Im not wrong about the Move, we all knew it the moment we saw it, its basic layout is pretty much exactly the same as the Wii-Mote and Nunchuck, especially with the Motion Plus, its not all that different at all. After using the Motion Plus and using the Move, I can tell you though that the Move is perfectly precise, which is what I really expected the Motion Plus to be, but was disappointed.

Oy Nick!! It is an eyetoy! That’s what’s so ridiculous about Kinect, it’s not able to offer anything new, because we’ve been down that road before before. I think Chamber is correct, maybe you are a little butthurt 😛

Me butthurt? Why? If I had the choice right now I would probably get the Move, and then maybe think about getting Kinect later down the line if it gives a few more reasons to be worth its money (especially the price its going for here).

As for the Kinect, I mean they are trying to use it for things like interface interaction and so on, its a little different, but yeah I get your point.

Very butthurt Nick. You seem to be taking many potshots at Sony or their games lately. Posting GT5 damage bullshots, posting GT5 fake long load times vids, trying to convince us Enslaved is sub HD on PS3 and native on 360 when they look exactly the same in the screens bar the lighting. Now you cant take a marketing joke about Kinect. Playstation am Evil Nick 😆

Oh and since when could the Wii do augmented reality coupled with the PS3’s 3D? Very buthurt my friend. Enjoy Kinect because you definitely have a massive hardon for Eyetoy 1.1 and MS.

Then again you just copied and pasted the exact same comment from someone in the N4G article didnt you? 😉

If i were you i would be complaining about the yet again V sync issues in another big game on both version causing tearing and lack of AA but as usual you just come off sounding like PR mouthpiece to purchase MS products or multi plat versions of their games.

Talk about a downgrade from Heavenly sword to Enslaved by the way and 3 years later on Unreal Engine  Compare thos pics to these Heavenly Sword pics.

Then again why im surprised all this is coming from someone who takes pot shots at Uncharted, Move, GT5. You missed out on LittlerBigPlanet. Dont forget to take shots at that also.

The biggest detractors of the Kinect is fortunately for MS from a commercial aspect not the target audience. The average hardcore gamer (who divides his time equally between playing on the best console ever (make.b3li3ve) surfing porn and masturbating) who jizzed his pants just a little bit the first time he saw Killzone is clearly not going to give a sh!t about stroking a virtual tiger (Although as I write this the potential for his third favourite activity and Kinect has become startlingly obvious. Kinect MoneyShot FTW!)
