Sony settles hacking class-action suit

Sony

If you’re like me, you’re unable to remember what happened yesterday. Some of you may have better memories that stretch back as far as 2011. If you possess that sort of retention, you may recall that Sony’s PlayStation Network was hacked and Sony lost up to 77 million people’s sensitive information. They eventually offered affected customers a free game or two – but for many that wasn’t enough. Those people initiated a class action law suit, which has now very nearly settled

A settlement has been proposed and approved by Sony. Now it just needs approval by a judge and it could see the company pay out $15 million to the many users affected by the PSN hack and resulting outage. No real money though, instead affected users will be offered content. that content includes PlayStation 3 and PSP games, PS Plus and Music Unlimited subscriptions, PS3 themes and something called SOE Station credit.

You can grab a slice of that settlement if you didn’t partake in the company’s original “welcome back” offer which handed out free games as an olive branch. Once the deal is approved in May 2015, you can claim your bit by filling out the form here…if you’re in the US.  Content will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Honestly though, $15 million is a bit of a slap on the wrist considering how egregious the breach was. 77 million accounts were compromised and it took Sony ten days before they even admitted it. It then took a further month before the PSN came back online.

“If you are responsible for so many payment card details and log-in details, then keeping that personal data secure has to be your priority,” the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office’s deputy commissioner David Smith said of the case when Sony was fined by the UK government for the data breach. “In this case that just didn’t happen, and when the database was targeted — albeit in a determined criminal attack — the security measures in place were simply not good enough.”

PS+ is so cheap $15 000 000.00 may actually be enough to give everyone one free month.

It’s less than a slap on the wrist – it’s virtual items.

Those virtual items are items people may have bought, like the Sims 2….. oh I see your point.

I bet Sony CEOs take another pay cut to cover the $15 000 000.00

This is an absolute joke of a settlement. As an online retailer for so many customers you would have expected them to have been much more secure and forthcoming when they discovered the breach.
As far as the class action lawsuit, I can’t imagine all the billing hours generated by law firms on both sides for such a small settlement. ‘Merica is fucked.
