Sony has sold 80 million PlayStation 3’s

THAT'S A LOT OF PS3's

Remember back when the PlayStation 3 launched? Microsoft’s console had already been out for a year, and was a pretty damned good value proposition compared to the ludicrously expensive console from Sony. The PlayStation Network sucked and Multiplatform PS3 games were comparatively terrible and Sony’s future seemed pretty bleak. How far we’ve come.

According to Sony, they’ve reached a pretty nice milestone and have sold their 80 millionth PlayStation 3. Microsoft, funny enough, announced the same milestone just last month. Factor in the fact that the PlayStation 3 was released a year later and a quite plain to see that Sony’s console is outselling Microsoft’s quite significantly.

It;s something I think will continue to happen. The Xbox 360 has been my primary console this generation, but in the last few years, the PlayStation has not only caught up in games and features, but has actually exceeded the 360. It really all started to go in Sony’s favour with the release of the slimmer, and rather importantly, cheaper PlayStation 3. PlayStation Plus, as just a further example, offers so much more value than Xbox Live and there are of course, the myriad exclusives you’ll find only on PlayStation; games like the Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls. Pity it has such a terrible controller.

The Xbox 360, with its lack of killer exclusives seems to have petered out in the final stretch, while the PlayStation 3 still has one huge heavy hitter in the tank; Gran Turismo 6. I think when the current generation is done and dusted Sony could well be the winner, ahead even of Nintendo and its Wii, which has very nearly stopped selling at all.

I have something to say and I’m going to say it!

    //Rant on!

All of you that moan about cramps while using the DS3 are doing it wrong. Maybe I should post a video of how to hold the controller or something. You don’t grip it like the Xbox controller because yes, your hands will go into spasm. I suspect most of you look like the people in Verimark commercials while trying to use a non-Ginso knife or something.

Even worse, some people prefer the PS controller to the Xbox controller, me included. So no, it isn’t a terrible controller. Most people don’t like it, and that I can accept, but it remains a purely subjective opinion. People says it feels cheap because of it’s weight. Well, you are probably the same people that buys iPhones because it is heavier. Daar is geen salf te smeer. I have never had a DS controller die on me (neither a Xbox controller). If it is too light for you, glue weights on it or something.

    //Rant off!

MS really let the generation slip. They developed the exact same arrogance that almost led to Sony’s demise. But I suspect they are going to be stronger than ever (MS) about a year from now. The whole DRM thing with the XB1 gave them a wake-up call.

I love my PS3, but the DS controller does not handle as well as the Xbox 360 controller. The raised trigger buttons on the XB360 works like a charm. I tend to get confused which shoulder button (Top Vs Bottom) is which on the DS…

The triggers on the DS are shit for most games, no doubt about it. Especially racing games which use R2 for accelerate and L2 for braking.

I’m not saying the controller is perfect, but don’t get the intense hate for it either.

I like my PS3 but my hands are just too big for the DS3 and I prefer the analog positions of the Xbox controller. But it’s just preference in the end. As you say.

I forgot to mention the position of the analogues. It feels much more natural on Xbox

I don’t hate you, I just have a different opinion. Yours is fine, and its good that you stated it. Its nice to know not everyone has the same problems. I personally cannot use the DS controller for extended times, but hey. Not everyone has tiny hands. 😉

I got cramps with the DS3, bought a couple of concave covers for the sticks and trigger clip ons, then I experimented ways of holding the controller differently (gripping from the sides towards the top) and now find it more comfortable than the xbox controller.

I don’t hate the DS3, it’s just an outdated (from launch) controller and I don’t bitch about cramped hands. Extended playtime on TLOU and Demon’s Souls have proven to me that the controller is decent enough but the moment you begin comparing it to the X360 controller its kak again. Having to buy concave thumbsticks and triggers for a +/- R800 controller to “fix” it is bs in my book but was necessary in order for me to be comfortable with it. The DS4 controller is better by some margin but the triggers feel paper thin and are still too small imo.

I like the PS4 controller’s triggers. The shape is better obviously, and I like the fact that they aren’t as “spongy”. Not sure about the size of the triggers, only played about 10 minutes with it, but it felt better than the DS3!

I spent years on a PS2, and that controller, no matter how I held it, killed my hands after 2 hours of play. I tried every way imaginable, and the same result every time. I eventually gave up and just limited my play sessions to 2 hours. I don’t have that problem with my xbox 360. a few weeks ago, I literally spent the entire waking weekend playing Xbox, and the only thing that started hurting was my neck from the weird positions I sat in. That was my fault.

I loved my Xbox for years, but never realized what a money grabbing bunch of people MS was till I unpacked my PS3 a few months ago.
With my PS 3 I could plug in an HD cable and the standard AV cable (My monitor has no sound, so I had to reroute it to PC Speakers) without having to buy a silly adapter for it. (I just took a hacksaw to my Xbox. Problem sorted. But it is the principle of the matter)
It had this nice little cable I could charge the controller with, and best of all, no batteries.
But the bestest of all, no red ring of death (Struck me twice on the Xbox)
That is helping a bit in my decision regarding my next gen purchase…

Money well spent. Never regretted it for a second. My first FPS on the PS3 Resistance: Fall of Man blew my mind completely. God of War 3 finally finished the epic tale of Kratos that started on the PS2. The Uncharted series was an awesome experience. Then PS+ rocked my world even further.

    Thank you Sony.

I must say, I was surprised when I saw for how little you could pick up an Xbox 360 including a few games these days.

I remember however, when the 360 came out in SA compared to when the PS came out and the Xbox wasn’t something you found everywhere though the PS was for sale in just about every shop this side of a liquor store.

Not a bad list but here is some input from me, bitch!

          First off, the unlisted list:
Demon’s Souls – an absolute must play!
Ratchet & Clank – 3 to choose from and all great fun (Tools of Destruction is the best one imo)
Motorstorm Apocalypse – the best 3D game to show off your hardware and fun as fuck, BONUS!
Resistance Series – enjoyed this way more than Killzone even if it was brown… all the time… like DOOM brown, serious

Uncharted 2 – this was the pinnacle of the series, much better than 1 and 3 and I doubt it will get better but they are all worth playing

Killzone 2 & 3 – waste of time (honestly) and I’ve played every one (incl PSP version which was ridiculously fun)

GT5 – Forza 3 was already better and released years earlier and the menu music alone in GT5 will cause bleeding of the brain

inFamous 1 and 2 – both enjoyable and worth the time investment

God of War 3 and MGS4 were both MEH! imo. Sequelitus probably as I loved GoW 1 & 2 but 3 felt bloated and more of the same but prettier. MGS3 was the start of the decline in the MGS series imo and tbh I never finished MGS4 because I got bored

Little Big Planet – you won’t play for more than hour or two (probably)

Heavy Rain – was actually enjoyable but I’ll never pick it up again, ever

Definitely worth the investment though dude. I would wait until the PS4 is released when everyone is trying to get rid of the PS3’s for shelf space and you’ll get it much cheaper.

Just look out for a few specials (got mine in June for R3200 with 2 controllers and GoW: Ascension).

The ultra slim feels very cheap with the plastic springloaded drive sliding hatch etc but I haven’t had any issues and with it.

And with PSN+ you can get a whole stack of those games for free.

My experience with current gen started with a mates 360, was cool but then I saw other buddies playing ps3 online way back early 2007 and thats when I bought my ps3, never had an issue with the DS3 have played for hours without cramps and I don’t have small hands, tge online experience wasn’t crap either, back then you couldn’t even play xbox online (here in SA) and on ps3 it was free, that was when gaming kicked up a gear for me andit was awesome jamming with mates all over the world!

Microsoft cant really compare their sales with Sony untill they come clean about how may people repurchased their xbox 360 because of the RROD. One of my friends are on his 4th xbox 360 because of malfunctions. The only reason he sticked with Microsoft is because of his game collection. I feel that a lot of people has the same story. I am not saying that the xbox 360 is bad of the ps3 is better. I also had a xbox 360 until it RROD on me. Thankfully my game collection was not that big and I could switch over to the PS3.
