Sony Defends 3D Glasses – Wants Nintendo to Stop Picking on Them Popular
   July 1st, 2010 clock image 2:30 pm

3dglasses

Sony has insisted that wearing glasses to view 3D content is a minor quibble – and wants Nintendo to stop harping on about the magical, glasses-free nature of their Nintendo 3DS.

"If you really want a big theatre experience, of course you have to wear glasses," president of Sony’s Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida said to IGN. "With the latest technology, the glasses are light and you kind of forget you’re wearing them after a while."

At E3 this year Sony, understandably, tried to push 3D, demonstrating the beautiful Killzone 3 in 3D – after handing out glasses to attendees.

Nintendo also pushed 3D with its 3DS, but was regularly pointed out that their ensorcelled handheld’s 3D visuals require but functional eyes- and it’s seemd to have made Sony a little butthurt.

"I have hope that they have a broader perspective with 3D," Yoshida said. "When you listen to what they are saying about the effect of 3D perspective to the games, they are saying the same message we are, but they don’t have to bash some small part of what the other company is doing.

"I think as an industry we should preach this new perspective, from a very large cinema screen to a small portable, because that helps advancing the games and the game industry," he said. "We’d like to work together to promote 3D."

Which pretty much translates to – PLEASE STOP PICKING ON US! Me? I’ll only really be interested in Home TV 3D technology when it’s completely glasses-free, so I think Nintendo can bang on about their enchanted technology as much as they like.

Pfffft…Sony wants people to think of them instantly when the word 3D is mentioned. This reminds me of how people still associate walkman with an audio cassette player instead of Sony’s line of walkman mp3 players.

R1000 for a pair of 3D glasses is by no means a MINOR quibble.

  • purpledragon

I find 3D glasses annoying and headache inducing. Also, whats wrong with a standard HD game?

Anyone remember those virtual reality experiment that never took off? Ok, yes the graphics were shit, blocks and lines. But it makes me wonder.

  • http://www.ayumi-hamasaki.net Luna

Sony will change their tune when 3D TVs can be done without glasses. Nintendo hit the holy grail of 3D to do it without glasses.

Those of us who need glasses regularly praise Nintendo. ^_^

  • Parker

Well until the technology is available might as well support Sony. Actually I’ve read a while back some guys have done glassless 3D, wonder what came of it.

  • BigBird

Glasses-less 3D is old news. Nintendo haven’t done anything original in that sense. The thing is that a hand-held gaming device is made to be looked at by one person from one perspective, which makes the implementation of glasses-less 3D ideal. You cannot do this with a TV as a TV is designed with the requirement to be viewed by more than one person and for the most part glasses-less 3D only works for one person from one perspective. Even if there’s only one person watching, they still have to sit in a particular spot to view 3D, although there are newer technologies where either several viewpoints exist from which one person at each point can view 3D without glasses or where the TV has a camera that tracks the head of a single viewer and adjusts the point from which 3D can be viewed accordingly, neither of which solve the problem entirely. So for Sony’s purposes, glasses-less 3D is not an option. Although in the end the console provides the signal required for 3D and the type of 3DTV one uses decides in what way the 3D visuals are displayed. So it’s not up to the PS3 whether we need glasses or not, it’s comes down to what type of 3DTVs are availible. So in the next few years we may have glasses-less 3DTVs that solve the current problems with the technology and enable many people to view 3D from all perspectives without glasses from one screen, but until then, there’s nothing more Sony can do except develop the TVs required.

LOL. And you….yeah you!!!! idiot… Stop Bashing sony.. It is none of your business, whatever hwat they want to promote or what they want to do to their product.. So if you don’t have decent words to address better Fvck off!!

And lastly.. Your assumptions are false, sony don’t give a damn if you wear 3d glasses while watching 3d to pay tribute to them.. Bastard!

  • Ndibu

Two words for you lil rant there…wow and LOL

  • Rez

This article is really ironic when you consider:

    1) The amount of time Sony has trashing Kinect lately especially since they say “they are saying the same message we are, but they don’t have to bash some small part of what the other company is doing.”

2)The amount of noise that was made by Sony fanboys when FFXIII was announced to come on multiple discs on xbox 360 and 1 for PS3.Sure wearing glasses for them is a small inconvenience but changing a disc once every 20hours *&#$^@ mission impossible.
