Cybersecurity

Sony has not had a good time as far as security is concerned. George “Geohot” Hotz publically cracked the PlayStation open by releasing its root keys. As a result of the litigation that followed, Geohot supporters bandied up and brought down Sony’s PlayStation network, along with a handful of other Sony-owned sites – exposing 77 million users’ private information in the process. It was all rather embarrassing for Sony – and though the company’s said it’s PSN woes are in the past you can bet online security is now pretty important to them.

How much so? Well they’ve hired a rather impressive security expert, and given him the longest job title in the world.

Philip R. Reitinger is Sony’s new  “Senior Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer, Corporate Executive in charge of global information security and privacy, Sony Corporation” – and it’s not just his lengthy honorific that’s impressive. He’s previously worked online security for Microsoft, the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the U.S. Department of Justice.

His tasks will include :

-Information security
-Privacy and Internet safety company-wide
-Coordinating with key Sony headquarters groups
-Networking with the larger infosec community to generate innovative security ideas
-Tracking down Anonymous and Lulzsec members and killing them in their sleep

That last one may or may not be true.
