Resistance servers shutting down tomorrow

Resistance

I hope you’re not a fan of the multiplayer components of Insomniac Games’ series of alternate history shooters, Resistance. Sony’s shutting down the servers of all three games this week.

Last week, Insomniac Games confirmed that the servers for all three of the games would be shutting down tomorrow.

While you’ve missed your window to play with Insomniac staff, you’ve still got tonight to get your very last multiplayer Resistance games done – especially if you’re hunting for those last few multiplayer trophies. after tomorrow, they’ll be impossible to achieve.  As for the reasoning? It’s up to Sony, says Insomniac.

The servers were actually announced to be closing on March 28, but it looks like Resistance fans have been granted slight reprieve.

I wonder if this affects the game’s pretty damned decent online co-op; it would be a pity to lose arguably the best thing about Resistance as a whole. Either way, the servers being shutdown does make you wonder about  the transience of this multiplayer gaming stuff – specially for games where multiplayer makes up the bulk of the experience.

Imagine, let’s say that Titanfall’s servers were shut down. How would you feel about spending $60 on something that could become useless at the flick of a switch? I think the least companies could do is patch in support for private servers once they shut ‘em down.

Insomniac Games has shifted from being a Sony-exclusive studio to making more multiplatform titles. their last game, Fuse, was frankly a bit rubbish. Their next game is the Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive.

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

    Ouch!

    • Hammersteyn

Yeah it sucks for those who still played the online portion. At least the still have single player so the disc is not totally worthless. Unlike other FPS games.

      • Jonah Cash

You sly dog you, saying other FPS games meaning Titanfall……

        • Hammersteyn

Oh yeah, Titanfall. Never thought of that but good example ;)

  • Sir Rants A Lot Llew. Jelly!!!

  • Half-Minute Hero [Umar]

Add Multiplayer ‘DLC’ to that pls

      • HvR

If LG post a DLC related article today; if I extend this list to reasons in articles posted over the last month Gavin will have to pay me a salary.

  • MakeItLegal

Eish …. Does make u wonder about other games …. Mmm single player AC 3 here I come …. After that mirrors edge finally been so keen

  • Hammersteyn

I’m scared for the day they shutdown Planetside 2

    • Kensei Seraph

They’d stop making money if that happened so it’s unlikely to happen until after Planteside 3 is released.

      • Hammersteyn

True, but still to restart on a new character

  • Matthew Holliday

Borderlands 1 is getting its server shut down aswell.
seems to be happening alot recently.

    • John Smirnov

Am, what? What are you talking about. Borderlands servers are still on.

    • John Smirnov

Am, what? What are you talking about. Borderlands servers are still on.

      • Matthew Holliday

they were migrated over to Steam befor gamespy shut them down.

        • John Smirnov

Then, it relates to EVERY game that had Gamespy server support, not just Borderlands. Also, complete shut down and migration are different things.

          • Matthew Holliday

at the time, the borderlands page had worded it like they were getting rid of them entirely.
my apologies if i somehow managed to offend you by mentioning that some servers were getting shut down.

  • Unavengedavo

Take it they will have no Resistance when shutting down the servers

    • HvR

      Dum dum thssss

  • Jonah Cash

Hmmmmm…. can see it now: Titanfall 2 release date 23/05/2016. Get your copy now as the servers will just shift over for 2 and 1 will be obsolete!! Thank you for paying full price for 1 get $5 off of your purchase of 2!!

  • Milesh Bhana

I’ll bet 10 Zimbabwean cents that RFOM3 will be a PSN+ freebie now.

This is one of the benefits of PC, private servers/rent servers. eg, still servers up for BF2 almost 10 years later

  • Brian Murphy

It’s a good thing that nobody ever bought into a games generation that removed client side server options. Otherwise, companies would be just shutting down game functionality left and right eventually. I’m just glad ‘gamers’ are far too intelligent to fall into that trap.

  • Mila

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! WHY?!?!?! R2 online gaming was the best thing about Resistance! I was level 30 as a medic…all of that is gone!!

    • Brian Murphy

This is why PC Gamer’s have been saying having no local server option is a very very bad trend to set for the industry. Wasn’t readily apparent to everyone at the time, because it makes running a server someone elses problem….until that someone else decides to dedicate their servers elsewhere.

PC Gamer’s aren’t always just trying to boast, sometimes they do actually have some important insight into things. Sucks to learn this lesson the hard way.

We need Resistance 4, Insomaniac. Or atleast a spin off of resistance except it has killer robots and others that are called Techs that can shapeshift into vehicles like Jets, Tanks, etc., that has singleplayer and co-op campaign, and up to 40 players can play in multiplayer (5 in co-op campaign). Maybe calling the game Meltdown. Buy it’s your choice.
