No publisher dominates the PlayStation landscape

Monopolies are terrible things and are rarely, if ever, a good thing for consumers. It’s great, then,  to see how well spread out the top publishers are on the PlayStation landscape.

According to research done by musicMagpie.co.uk the top publishers according to worldwide sales for 2013 on the PlayStation 3 are as follows. Dollar value relates to units sold and the percentage is the number of games in the top 500.

  1. EA Games – $123 million – 18.4%
  2. Sony – $112.7 million – 13.6%
  3. Activision – $86.4 million – 8.6%
  4. Take 2 – $59.2 million – 6.8%
  5. Ubisoft – $47.3 million – 5.8%
  6. Namco Bandai – $23.1 million – 5.8%
  7. Capcom – $23 million – 5.8%
  8. THQ – $21 million – 5.2%
  9. Konami – $21.1 million – 4%
  10. Sega – $21.1 million – 2.6%
  11. Others – $107.9 million – 23%

If I were Konami or Sega I’d start panicking since they were beaten out by the now defunct THQ…and what did Ubisoft do right to have such a small piece of the pie and yet over double the income compared to their competitors?

Another interesting stat is how the genres were broken down which clearly points out that the PlayStation 3 is a terrible home for Platformers

  1. Action – 25.4%
  2. Shooters – 16.8%
  3. Sports – 15.6%
  4. Fighting – 8.8%
  5. Role Playing – 8.6%
  6. Racing – 8.4%
  7. Others – 7.6%
  8. Adventure – 4.4%
  9. Platforming – 4%

The infographic has a ton more interesting stats and can be viewed below. Remember click to make big as this is quite a monster of an infographic.

Isn’t it depressing that the entire Southern Hemisphere is thrown in with the small countries in the North and we are still only the second largest area.

Ca$hcom still has a couple of strong series ongoing but Konami better catch a wake up. MGS and PES cant be their only lifelines. They need new IPs and soon.
