Latest Gran Turismo 5 Demo – Awkward Damage Pics, Video Smoking
   September 6th, 2010 clock image 3:00 pm

GT5demoDamage.jpg

People in the US have been rushing out to Best Buy stores to try out the Gran Turismo 5 demo stands that have been setup, and a lot of them made sure to take some sort of camera with.

Reports have been coming out far and wide of the new demo featuring the updated damage system, and after looking at a first set of shots, I was really impressed. After seeing a second set of shots I started noticing something rather awkward and strange.

Hit the jump for the pics.

Let’s start with the good. I saw some great shots that showed off some very impressive damage:

In the next set of pics that made their way onto the net, the story changed a little. The person who posted the shots firstly said that while some cars were showing massive damage, others cars barely changed at all.

The damage is apparently designed to work in “real-time” and instead of pre-made models, actually crumples the car model for added realism. The only problem is, I’ve never seen cars that look like this after an accident. Here’s a video running that shows the very out-of-place looking damage, as well as pics:

I noticed this trend of a strange corrugated effect, not to mention that it just plain doesn’t make sense compared to the placement of other elements, such as the car grill. The game isn’t out yet, so we already know that more work is probably going to happen and most probably has already happened since this demo was put together.

That said, the release date isn’t so far off, so if anything is going to be done, it had better be done very soon. It still intrigues me that so much of a fuss is being made out of Gran Turismo 5′s damage model, considering that most games these days include it as a standard (even Mafia II’s cars had an impressive damage model).

I think the major issue here, is that no other game looks quite as incredible as Gran Turismo, so when it comes down to things like damage, any imperfections are going to stick out like a sore thumb.

@ Lans have you seen F1 from codemasters.

i have seen the f12010, and was very impressed!

but you really should wait for the HD weather trailer of Gt5 weather, it beats F12010s weather by quite a bit. Kaz-san has confirmed standing starts with rain being kicked up by all 16 cars onto your windscreen, anyways i cant describe it you have to see it yourself theres quite a bad quali version on gtplanet if you go there http://www.gtplanet.net

Ralli courses are randomly generated so you wont know the course until you drive so you need help from your co-driver

Weather is also random, and even if the forecast is sunny or otherwise the weather can still instantly change, similar to real life!

At a press conference Thursday at the Toyko Game Show, Gran Turismo 5 Developer Kazunori Yamauchi disclosed additional features so far unrevealed by the E3 2010 and GamesCom 2010 conferences.

First up is a series of new tracks and cars. Laguna Seca Oh My God!, Trial Mountain Oh My God!, and Circuit de la Sarthe Oh My GOd! may all be familiar to racing buffs — but the cars are a bit strange. The Kübelwagen, Schwimmwagen Oh MY GOd!, Samba Bus, and 4200R are all technically “old” cars developed years ago — but maybe people haven’t ever seen them. Additionally, Kazunori also revealed the GT by Citroën R, Oh My God!

Kazunori briefly touched on the game’s special-events system using a live demo of Rally Mode. In this dirt-track mode, the courses are generated dynamically right when you load into the course Oh My God!. A navigator calls out turns, or you can use a course-overlay view to track turns. Like a real-life rally race, times are cumulative, and other cars get to start first.

Lastly, Kazunori revealed the Dynamic Weather Changes system. For courses where applicable (like the endurance run courses), a “forecast” set by the developer creates conditions for weather events to occur Oh my God!. For example, a course my be “partially cloud” and then during the race, the player may experience rain or sleet. The effects of weather create real road challenges, like a slick road at night that reflects lights oddly or a dry desert course with sand blowing in front of the windshield Oh MY GOD!. Kazunori said this is a feature that’ll probably be more for the hardcore than the casual racer.

    OH MY GOD
MY APOLOGIES *100 to you know who i dont do this too often and im a pretty good guy
