Shocking. A newer game on the same hardware that runs and looks better than its predecessor? NO WAY! Still, it is true. Though I enjoyed the heck out of Killzone 2, it did have a myriad of flaws. On release, the deadzone for look controls was too large, making movement a pain in the arse. That was thankfully patched up later.
It was also very samey with regards to the environments; apart from one or two encounters, almost the whole single player game took place in urban scrapyard areas. It appears that they’ve sorted out both of those issues.
"[While] we were still tweaking and checking framerate, I checked this game back-to-back with Killzone 2and have to say that it plays so much more fluidly,"KZ3 director Mathijis de Jonge told Edge magazine. "Also, the adjustments we made to lean-and-peek — you can actually slide into cover now, vault over, brutally melee your enemies — it feels more fluid, stutters less. There’s fewer points of irritation."
[The] thing with Killzone 2 was there were some quite technical problems in the controls, actually, and I think we’ve solved those now."There was a lot of lag… by fixing those issues we’ve lost a bit of that weighty feeling. We’ve tried to maintain that original experience, but if we’d kept it as slow, we’d run into the danger of losing some people, moving too far away from our competitors."
Guerilla’s Herman Hulst, adressing the environment issue said "We’re going from the Helghast interpretation of jungle to very Killzone-esque scrapyards, and at the end we go into space. It’s a big departure from Killzone 2, where the first five levels were all urban settings."
Killzone 2 will be available on the PS3 towards the end of next month, and I really like what I’m hearing. Plus, it’ll be something to really see if that investment I made in Playstation Move paid off.
