Gran Turismo 6 launch sales a fifth of previous game

Gran Turismo is one of those evergreen franchise for Sony; a game that just sells and sells. Some people buy PlayStations just to play the game. It seems however, that it’s starting to lose its verdant lustre.

According to Eurogamer, citing Chart Track figures , Gran Turismo has debuted with launch sales that come in at a fifth of the previous game. That’s quite a significant sales hit.

It could be down to quite a number of factors. Gran Turismo 5, for the most part is still going pretty strong and until really recently was still on the receiving end of a number of updates. It could also be that excitement for the next-generation of consoles has dampened enthusiasm for the sim-racer and that the game would have fared better had it been a PlayStation 4 launch game.

It could also be that all this micro-transaction nonsense has caused people to lose that fervent zeal that usually accompanies a Gran Turismo launch. Or maybe people are growing tired of series’ that are essentially the same thing, over and over again; Call of Duty and Battlefield this year also reportedly have lower year-on-year sales.

In even more depressing news, Knack is still beating Super Mario 3D World. Have you picked up GT6? What do you think so far? Do you think the derogatory GT 5.5 claims are valid?

To me it just didnt make sense that they released it for current gen consoles. Maybe they did that because of the already large install base of the PS3. In all honesty to me there isnt a major justification to buy GT6 as GT5 fits to all the needs already. If they launched it on PS4. Updated graphics, simulation etc etc i think it would have done a lot better. Maybe not as good as GT5 sales, but certainly a lot better than its currently selling.

Driveclub is already coming to PS4 so why even bother with GT6. Especially with those micro transactions

Driveclub is more arcade racer right? If Driveclub is more directed at Simulation then i can then understand why they never launched GT6 on PS4. Micro transactions will be in all games soon. Sad but true.

Micro transactions is not a problem. No one is putting a gun to your head.

The only people who have a problem with the micro transactions is the media and those who dont intend to play the game anyway.

Anyone who knows anything about GT6 knows that the way you earn credits is the same as GT5. The only people who will use their credit card are those who dont want to play the single player to earn credits the old fashioned way.

I think the issue with the sales and with the other games, everyone’s budget is messed up with the release of the new generation consoles.
Pretty much a case of spending cash firstly on a new console and getting one or two games and then as the cash flow get’s better over the coming months the majority of people will be able to spend money just on the games.

I myself cannot afford all the released games because I’m firstly saving money for a PS4 including a larger 2 Tb drive. So the games that used to sell well day one will overall most likely sell well or close to previous levels as time goes on.

An interactive movie and a racing game with like half the amount of cars the previous title had. I get why the reviews were mixed.

I am not sure what they are trying to do. The frame rate might be better or something. They must have expected the internet to do side by side comparisons. I don’t get it.

I doubt they know what they’re doing. It’s just terrible that they’d destroy the graphics to that extent.

I got it this weekend… Got stuck in on Friday night (after a 1.2GB patch! Eish…).

Gran Turismo 6 or 5.5? Well, if I’m honest and unbiased, I can see a case for both. Firstly, the cars do look amazing. Truly great detail. However, the tracks themselves do look pretty much as they always have this gen… And they almost seem lifeless, if that’s the word I’m looking for. Even when there’s a crowd, it just doesn’t seem right… You can tell / you know it’s fake! I’ve seen much better environments in racing games this gen that have more life to them and simply look more real (Grid 2, Forza 3 AND 4 and Forza Horizon, to name a few).

Handling is still GT’s selling point and it’s right up there – the cars are simply amazing to drive and you can feel the difference in handling between each car. They nailed it, once again!

I’m happy to say that the AI does seem better too. No longer do they continually follow the racing line and seem oblivious to your presence on the race track… Now that only happens sometimes… Yes, the AI seems slightly robotic at times, but it is 100 times better than GT5! So very chuffed about that.

In terms of sound, it’s pretty good. But I still think some of the cars sound WAY too alike to one another… And some just sound plain ‘off’ (some of them I’ve had the pleasure of actually driving in real life and it really doesn’t like that in real life!).

I love the addition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed – gives a nice motor maniac touch to it, if ya know what I mean. 🙂 But the moon missions… Apart from being unique and being able to say you drove the moon buggy on the moon (the handling takes ALOT of getting used to)… I’m sorry, but I really don’t get the point. Maybe it’s just me.

Overall, I like the game. But I don’t LOVE it… Sad, I know, but there have simply been too many advancements in racing games in the last while. I know I may be hated for this, but Gran Turismo almost feels like it’s beginning to be left behind… Or perhaps it’s simply showing it’s age…

Agreed. It’s not a bad game. But it’s far from the genre leader it used to be… Which really does make me sad… 🙁

If you think about it. They never REALLY had any competition until lately with Forza and a few others and i think because they were always leading they slacked. So they need to pull up there socks and get to work!

The last goodwood in the X2010… That things screams like a banshee!
Must admit though, there are some things my mates and i have found that arent impressing us at all. One of them is the way some cars perform. Take the Supra for example. we mirrored the specs on one from GT5 to GT6, turned off all assists and then dropped the hammer on a straight track… in 5 you would be spinning and burning rubber till fourth gear, in 6 it felt like the traction control was still on…
Other than that sort of stuff its still a fun game

Definitely agree with you. But a lot of things must be taken in context with regards to the hardware it’s running on. What they have squeezed out of the PS3 is trully amazing.
Current games are running on much more advanced hardware and using cloud services. So graphics and AI have way more processing power to achieve better results compared to the PS3.

You can clearly see compromises have been made in areas not because they can’t do it better but because the resources are just not there to make it happen.

However GT6 will evolve and get better as with GT5. Including the new sound generating system they are working on. Will be great to see if this is what they could achieve on a PS3 what GT6 or GT7 will be like on the PS4.

I think most of comments spot on. I also picked up GT6 on Friday and played quite a bit this weekend.

      Good:
      (1) Its more of a GAME…that’s right! A game. GT5 was a simulation that forgot it was a game! GT6 feels like a game i.e. its progression system is way, way better.
      (2) From (1) comes…more FUN…
      (3) AI definitely feels a lot better.
      (4) Graphics seem sharper.
      (5) Games menu system is better and FASTER…hell GT5 trudged along…click button…wait…wait…wait…oh there you are.
      (6) Online faster – no changes per se but getting there faster.
      (7) Licences system is better implemented.
      (8) Moon driving is a laugh…
      (9) Sure will last you a long time…
      (10) GT Vision cars and what is to come from that – Merc looks incredible so far.

      Not so good:
      (1) Microtransactions and in game currency system. There is no doubt it was tweaked with microtransactions in mind and they should be caned for that…I was lucky to get 1m credits with anniversary edition but many cars well above 1m mark…will take ages!
      (2) GT games will always be a grind given their nature…racing is good but can be sterile (as is case in many such games).
      (3) No cars for winning events – do get cars for all gold in ALL events/licences. But not for completing individual events in game.
      (4) Could have done a bit more with inclusion of Goodwood Festival – its just a uphill dash which is in keeping with real thing but could have tried something a little different perhaps? Great inclusion though.
      (5) Don’t race ze Germans on Nurburgring (online)…you will LOSE! 🙂

Personally – I liked it a lot. GT5 was a let down for me (own every GT game) with 4 being highlight. 6 is getting there – will keep plugging away to see whether it can better 4 but I doubt it.

If anyone actually bothered to play the game and scratch below the service instead of trying it out as an arcade racer / mario cart. It is simply the most complete DRIVING game on the market bar non.

The new physics on the suspension and tires is huge step up allowing for road surface imperfections to interfere with driving lines.

The online racing is phenomenal, being able to out run Ferrari’s with only a few thousands credits and some tuning know how is possibly the best experience you can have as a car/driving/racing enthusiast.

oh and NOS is back! 😀

Why didn’t you mention this articles refers specifically to the UK? Hardly important in the greater scheme of things, considering the UK has been moving to the xbox in recent years. The sales figures for mainland Europe will give a much better indication of where GT6 is heading.
