So you’ve not yet bought Visceral Games’ visceral survival horror Dead Space 2, but Nick’s overwhelmingly positive review’s managed to force your hand. Suppose you’re a multi-console gamer, not sure which one’s best for you.

Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry has done its usual bit by comparing the console versions for any signs of disparity between them. Which version fared best?

Well, it looks like 3rd-party developers really have a handle on the PS3’s strange, but beastly architecture, because according to Digital Foundry there’s near perfect platform parity. Releases like this should make PS3 owners happy, because often they’ve gotten stiffed when it comes to multiplatform releases.

“…it’s rare that a game comes along where Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are so close that it is almost impossible to tell the two apart visually.” They continue with “There’s nothing here aside from the odd, unnoticeable dip in performance that suggests that one version of Dead Space 2 has any kind of tangible advantage over the other.”

The only thing that might sway opinion is the inclusion of a move-compatible version of Dead Space extraction, a once Wii exclusive on-rails lightgun shooter. It’s one of my favourite Wii games, and reason enough for any multi-console to opt for the PS3 version.

For those who absolutely loathe disc-swopping, the fact that the 360 version ships on two discs might be another determining factor, but as Dead space 2 is a linear game, the single disc change on chapter 7 is inconsequential; a minor inconvenience.

Needless to say, you’ll be getting an excellent game, no matter which version you do decide to buy.
