E3 2010: Gran Turismo 5 Hands-On Flame On

GT5HandonE3.jpg

Gran Turismo 5 is nearly here and I have finally had the chance to take Polyphony Digital’s new baby out for a drive.

I was able to choose what mode, track and car I wanted to use, so I hit the menus to see what’s what. As a big fan of both Ferrari as well as the Top Gear series I decided that it was only right that I should take the brand new Ferrari 458 Italia around the Top Gear test track.

I turned all of the assists off, set it to professional and quick race then unleashed the beast. Read my impressions, after the jump.

Straight off the bat, the racing physics in Gran Turismo 5 are feeling more solid and realistic than ever before. This was further complimented by the really great racing wheel that was setup with the game on the showroom floor. The fresh physics system combined with some top notch force feedback provided an incredibly realistic and rubber-on-the-road feeling whilst powering my Ferrari around the circuit.

Everything feels really tight, and when set to the realistic modes that I was using, the car is ruthless if you don’t treat it with respect.

The graphics are still as smooth as ever, but I cannot completely shake the feeling that everything besides the cars still feels a little plain. What I will say is that I was driving on the Top Gear test track, and it doesn’t really have much to see to begin with, so I’m going to reserve my judgement as far as track visuals are concerned until I go and test the game out again, on a more interesting circuit.

I will also be playing the game again in 3D and will be update you all on how well it is implemented and how much it adds to the experience.

I left my time with Gran Turismo 5 feeling very confident that Gran Turismo 5 is going to put fat smiles on the faces of fans and newcomers alike. All of the time spent creating this game looks like it may very well be worth the wait as the game proved to be incredibly solid.

PlayStation Move Starter Pack Packaging

  • Potty391

Now for the important question: How does it stack up against Forza?

  • mitas

@potty391 – Forza? no ways thats like apples and pears

  • AC!D

The videos with the day and night transitioning looked really incredible. Im glad the game plays well!

  • Potty391

They’re both realistic racing simulators… I’ve never played a modern Gran Turismo (last one I played was on PS1) so I wouldn’t really know what’s the difference.

  • lans

told u so all u haters can suck egg
they have not even shown us the weather system with rain etc… i hope it makes the cut!

hows the rally stages? are they just showing the tuscany track?

  • dale

So, is it going to get headtracking (via the ps-eye) or not???

  • RSA-Ace

Yes of course. I’m not too sure what else could do it.

  • gt5 good lol

as a gt fan gt5 is looking more boring and less exciting. where is the real damage? where is the forza style livery editor? (hence it being direct competition) where is the custom parts editor? who wants realistic boring racing? does yamauchi listen to fans? why the november release date when it was meant to be out in japan already? what other feature takes this long to put in the game? and for crying out loud get rid of the rubbish cars that nobody will race apart from in the license section and then you could maybe add full damage to all cars not just false damage to the 200 so called premium cars. where is the next gen in gt5? and 3D sucks after about a minute, i could go on forever because it is all wrong what i have seen already we should have been shown all the game by now not dragging on the wait so that sony can have a nice big spread in thier magazine. have a nice day NOT

  • GT5Anticip8r

This sounds like a slight rip off. 1000+ cars, and only about 200 of them are ‘Premium’. In other words, it’s an incomplete effort. How can we play a game that’s one fifth stunning and four fifths ‘Standard’? If they hadn’t wasted all this time on really anal details, like replicating the graffiti on the Nurburgring, all cars in the game could have been made Premium.

  • JagX22

Imagine this game, fully 3D, hundreds of cars, looks UNBELIEVABLE. It’s going to be insane.

  • lans

Im so dissapointed in this site. All you douches can just play ur stupid forza 3 and live in denial, premium cars or not gt5 is a much better game, and its not like they showed there full hand, full details will be in august at gamescon where weather and etc will be announced how can you guys be so useless this is the reason why earth is so crappy, people make truly amazing creations and millions of ill informed grunts proclaim its crap!!!

i have lost all faith in this site and it is ir-redemable you fanboys can like happily in your mediocrity im sick and tired who cant see the tireless work and discipline of polyphony, i mean seriously there is no simulation game that comes close to this!

all of you fools can choke on vuvuzelas!
