David Jaffe doesn’t think [certain people at] Sony likes his game Flame On
   June 15th, 2011 clock image 11:45 am

David Jaffe is one of the greatest characters in videogame history but this latest story actually makes me feel a little sad for him.

When interviewed by Eurogamer instead of his usual foul mouthed tirade he actually sounds a little dejected about how well Twisted Metal is going to do and the treatment he is receiving from Sony.

I first saw the new Twisted Metal at E3 last year and I have to admit that I didn’t really get it. It seemed fun and all but nothing like the level of an Uncharted, Gears of War or Skyrim.

And he seems to think that Sony think the same when he says

There are guys (In Sony) who get it, but there are just as many other people who go ‘I don’t really get it – is this something we really want to be promoting at the same level as say, Uncharted 3?

But while that’s understandable what does surprise me is that they haven’t even been approached about making a PS Vita version of the game which leads me to believe that Sony doesn’t think it’s going to be big enough to justify the costs involved.

As to where it is on the Vita, probably if it’s a big hit we’re going to do it,

Nobody has talked to us, so it’s not like ‘I can’t talk about that’ – that’s usually what you say when it’s in development. Nobody has talked to us

Since it was the crowning moment at Sony’s press conference last year you would have thought it was really high on Sony’s list but apparently it’s been dropping over the last year and now it’s being left to it’s own devices. Basically let’s see how it goes and if it does well then we’ll invest more else it’s going to be the end of an era.

So what do you think, would you be sad to see this as the end of the Twisted Metal idea or has Sony got it spot on and this is no longer relevant to our time…

David Jaffe is another Tim Schafer with wild Indie ideas. The big corps don’t like those risks. Anybody watch the making of God of War DVD that came with the game. I got the feeling that people just cant get on with this crazy cat, but I give him thumbs up for his big Ideas.

I respect this guy,if gaming is to survive such talent and imaginative individuals are needed. Again the Exec elites will never understand what makes this kinda guy tick… I can imagine the PS3 right now without an exclusive like God of War, nor can I imagine the original PS without Twisted Metal.

You should read Jaffe’s twitter. He’s pretty pissed at you guys because you’re bad at your jobs.

I agree, I cannot fathom the complete and utter nonsense he spouted in this article. It is basically your garden variety link bait.

      • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

What exactly do you think is nonsense in this article? The only thing that is possibly misleading is the headline because we’re limited with characters and generally clarify things in the article.

I read in the interview that certain Sony people don’t get Twisted Metal which was the basis of the headline

        • Anonymous

Well Gavin, where do I start; for me it feels like you are running a liquidation sale of “stupid” in this piece. After reading it I was left with the option to regard you in one or two ways:

          1. You are greatly deprived of oxygen in your youth and suffered catastrophic cerebral damage that greatly diminished your potential intellect later in life.

          or

          2. You are a shameless link-baiting whore out to make money on other peoples hard work without having to create a compelling, informative and entertaining post.

Now in the hope that one of your parents didn’t play “let’s hide Gavin’s face with the pillow”, I am going with option two.

I get that journalism of any type is extremely difficult, especially in a tiny industry such as ours, but I also get that you need to make money so the temptation to embellish the story because you are scared in terms of your ability to make the rental payment on your double wide.

So I understand what I “get”, so let’s explore what you don’t:

          1. Your headline is volatile, incendiary and a gross overstatement of the actual facts, based on the very quotes you posted.

Let me give you an example of a headline:

EG: “America thinks that Gavin is a dolt”

Does that ring true? Probably not. Why? because I do not think that in good conscience I speak for all of North America.

          Do you “get” this now?

I am 100% sure that there are guys at Sony that would overwhelm you with the mountain of stuff they do not know. BUT until we actually know or care who those people are, you can’t really write an article like this. Well if you are a proper journo that is.

The assertion that SCE doesn’t care about this IP is so violently stupid it is hard to understand how you can to it.

Here is what I seen at E3:

TM had a prime location on the Sony stand, a ton of marketing assets were being floated around, Jaffe -from what I seen from his tweets- was being pinged around for interviews EXACTLY as a showcase creator would be. So I am at a loss in terms of where you are coming from in terms of this piece.

My advice to publishers and developers is just to give Lazy gamer a miss when releasing a title to ensure that you are not misquoted, taken out of context (you should look that word up Gavin, it is a handy word in your profession) or misrepresented.

          • Nick de Bruyne

Sheesh dude, come on… are such harsh words so necessary? Rather make a clear point without the unnecessary insults, it will only allow your comment to communicate across better rather than have it mistaken for a crazy rant.

            @Digigala:disqus

          • Anonymous

            Wait what?

            You guys:

            1. Take quotes out of context.
            2. Make up headlines i.e. Sony does not like TM
            3. When the subject completely denies that Sony doesn’t like his title, you refuse to correct the article.

Then you worry about if I hurt your journo’s feelings as if it is my job to make his toes curl?

OK in fairness, you are right and I am wrong. I should not hold Lazy Gamers journo’s to a decent journalistic standard.

It was completely wrong of me to expect a headline to actually reflect what the subject actually said. You my friend are 100% right.

Actually when I reflect upon it, I should probably hold myself up to your high standards, after all; you guys are the epitome of high standards.

After all you guys re-branded your entire site around DNF, so your content has to reflect that high standard :)

I feel almost duty bound to apologize, so please wait while I locate my violin.

          • i “seen” that too at E3!!!!!

dude, its quite apparent that you are still a bit stuck up Jaffe’s ass and need some more lube to get out.

we’re all really happy at what you “seen” at E3, and i’m sure you will continue to write lengthy posts about all that you “seen”.

please save us from your ramblings. you’re wasting valuable space on this site. if you don’t like what you read, move along. you won’t be missed.

          • Anonymous

or you can just not read what I wrote, as “its quite apparent that you are still a bit stuck up lazy gamers ass and need some more lube to get out”

            LOL@valuable space son.

          • stricktmachine

*yawn*…i see i got under your skin with that one. it’s quite apparent how it would strike a nerve, judging by your twitter conversations with mr. twisted metal himself. can’t wait for your review of his game….

oh, and i’ll let you have the last word…it certainly has been fun conversing with a real game reviewer living the dream.

          • Anonymous

In fairness Jaffe is more entertaining than apartheid gamer/lets make stuff up gamer/ keep Nelson in prison gamer right? lol

          • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

@Digigala:disqus Your original comment had a lot of value and meaning however lowering yourself to slate us for being South African is pretty despicable and really does harm your standing.

          • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

            1. I’ve updated the headline to make it more exact

            2. I’d recommend reading an entire article before commenting to ensure your comment reflects the article and not the headline

            3. Thanks for your advice to the publishers but you do realise that we didn’t get this interview directly so your advice is pretty useless in the end. Maybe if Sony had organised us an interview we wouldn’t have ‘misunderstood’ :)

Thanks for taking the time to share your feelings and don’t worry my feelings haven’t been hurt and I value all feedback

          • Oldfart

Did News for Gamers crash?? What are all the American PS3 Fluffer boys doing here? I gave DigiGala a like, because he needs a big hug.

          • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

It seems we annoyed Mr Jaffe and his supporters arrived to back him up.

            It’s been awesome :)

          • Oldfart

LazyGamer rocks!! If he is annoyed with LazyGamer then it means your site is more controversial than other AAA sites like Destructoid and IGN. I think its our Lazy South African humor that the Americans will never understand.

    • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

Read his updates, he’s unhappy with me which is his right however I still don’t feel I have misquoted him and if I have it wrong I would be happy to update the article

      • http://www.facebook.com/Art999 Arturo Hurtado

LOL!!! Yes because him telling you, you are completely wrong is obviously not misquoting him. Nice logic.

        • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

Well unless he wants to retract the quotes I fail to see the misquote

  • http://twitter.com/Bean_Fever Nico

LOL lots of controversy on lazygamer these days

    • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

We try to inform and entertain

  • http://twitter.com/That_At_Man @Man

@-man does not care what David Jaffe says, only what David Jaffe does. @-man will make up @-man’s mind when @-man plays the game.

@-man says “When a developer starts talking trash or causes a scene, it’s generally because he knows his game is going to bomb, and he’d rather pass the blame than accept the consequences”. @-man sits back, and sips on some Kool-Aid.

  • Oldfart

Even if the game lives up to its promises and becomes another master piece It will still bomb because people love to hate Mr Jaffe for some reason. His blogs are usually controversial and he is good at calling people out and is 100% passionate about his job. But people love popping that passion balloon, look at pop Idols, POP being the sound it makes when you soul is destroyed by public opinion. Like Peter Moly from Lionhead or Jade Raymond from Ubisoft people love pissing on their parade.
So we all know as gamers that any article about Mr God of War is taken with a pinch of salt. But like in any medium you just got to watch out for the very loyal fanbase and to the SONY boys this man is a SONY demigod. Mine is Cliffy B.

I think we need a Flamebait Friday with Cliffy B vs DJ. Which person has the craziest fans.

  • YourDailyTruth

Lazygamer.  Embarrassing South African journalism since .

Gotta admit though, u get plenty free traffic from myself in a day becos I come back multiple time to see what bullshit is now clogging up the internet.  I do the same with ANCYL twitter.

So raise your glass to the cream of the bias clowns who do everything the can to fuck up the image of South African gaming and South African gaming journalism.

How the hell Jason and co from Megarom associate with you clowns, is beyond me.
