The combat can be quite challenging at times. If you don’t manage to grasp the different weaknesses of an enemy then you will have a hard time killing them. I highly recommend reading the manual first because if you don’t know that a skeleton is immune to your High Sword of Death then you will think this game is impossible. Enemies’ different resistances are indicated by small icons near their health bars and if you don’t make special notice of them then you will have a hard time killing them.
The audio in this game is generally well done with the exception of some of the voice acting. There is an instrumental score that follows you throughout the game and it’s calming and fitting and when in combat the tone changes to a more battle like piece that makes you eager to fight. The voices of the different NPC can be quite laughable at times with some awkward delivery and strange tones. It’s not that bad, but can steer you away from the immersion somewhat.

The landscapes are well detailed with mountains and hills all looking vibrant and lush and in the daylight they really stand out. The deserts give you that feeling of warmth and depth and you feel like you can just get lost there. The cities depict that medieval setting beautifully with peasant camps and temples just littering the landscape. The same can’t be said about the facial textures. A female character can be described by other characters as “beautiful” or “hot”, but when you look at her up close she looks like that chick you took to the dance because you felt sorry for her.

The little things really stand out in this game. Some of the mini-games and things you could do totally took me by surprise. I bought a lute from some dude with a guitar and some sheet music. When I selected the lute, I suddenly started to shred it in a Guitar Hero style mini-game looking for tips and musical fame. It’s really fun to just sit on top of a mountain playing “Trade Wind” on the guitar just because you feel like it. You do all types of other things too like sailing a boat and gambling. The lockpick mini-game can be a challenge and you really need a sharp eye to succeed in it.

You need to slide the lockpick into a slot at the correct time and move to another slot where you repeat the process until ultimately reaching the bottom. It might sound easy, but on the later more difficult locks you will have to be quick and responsive. The lock picking does sound like God slamming his car door shut and how nobody notices me breaking into somebody’s drawer is beyond me.

There is multiplayer in this game where you can either go on a sort of co-op story, deathmatch and duels. There is a mode called Village mode where you build buildings with the money you gained in your online adventures in a sort of Farmville experience to gain more money. It’s recommended you play with a few of your friends throughout the co-op story because it is rather fun, but not with random people.

Conclusion:

All in all this game really is a robust RPG experience. From numerous side quests to little things you can do to waste your time. The story isn’t much to look at and only becomes interesting very late into the game. If you’re an RPG fan then you will definitely enjoy this.

Thabo’s Achievement/Trophy Tip:

You get quite a bulk from story missions only, but the game does encourage you to discover the different combat styles and explore the different side-quests. There are a multitude of multiplayer achievements, but with the right team they are easy to obtain. Some achievements are missable so I recommend going to a guide before progressing the story.

Scoring:

Presentation: 8.0/10

The game looks pretty with vibrant backdrops and lush settings. The character models leave much to be desired in the form of more detailed facial textures and better-looking woman. Is that too much to ask?

Sound: 7.0/10

Severely let down by the often atrocious voice acting. The music is a fitting and epic score and will leave you humming the tunes before you know it. You can even play the tunes on your trusty violin if you feel like it.

Gameplay: 8.0/10

The combat gives you a very broad choice of fighting styles and you will certainly enjoy hacking a rhino to death with your Sword of Death even if it’s frowned upon in South Africa. The magic elements can be confusing at first though

Value: 8.5/10

You will definitely play this game for a good amount of time if you invest in doing all the side-missions and little extras. I played it for a good 40 hours before finally completing the last story mission. It starts off slow but soon it will draw you in. There isn’t much replay value so a good an thorough first playthrough will be more than enough.
