Tomb Raider PS3 version compared to PS4

Bring it

I’m not a big fan of hosting other gaming sites videos for the obvious reason that we don’t want to lose you to some massive faceless corporation which just posts gaming news because they profit from it. But this comparison video and interview that the real IGN has managed to put together really does showcase what is so special about the new consoles.

What’s most impressive is that this isn’t just a simple up-scale, using nothing but previous assets and technology. According to the definitive edition FAQ, “The team didn’t just up-rez the game. They pulled it apart and rebuilt it with new technology, finally allowing us to reach the vision for Tomb Raider that we always wanted.  There’s new textures, new physics and geometry and an entirely new face for Lara.

The smoke hanging around the ceiling really does make the game look that much better and the spotlight improvement is long overdue. I hated the trial and error  gameplay that we have become used to when trying to play stealthily at night around spotlights.

Now what I really can’t wait for is for the first real exclusives to hit the new consoles where the game has been developed from the ground up to take advantage of the added power that the hardware now has available.

I’m still on the side lines of this generation thanks to being poverty stricken but the first major exclusive to land will force me to sell my kidneys to pick up a console. I have a feeling in the next few months we are going to start hearing a lot of promises with this year’s E3 starting to look like it’s going to be rather revealing  for gaming enthusiasts.

I’m a diehard BF4 fan, but I’m still gonna give my all to shadowfall MP once I’ve done the campaign. It looks amazing

I say this with a heavy heart being a big BF fan, but currently yes, I’m playing Killzone online, and not BF4… And I’ve got a premium account…. It’s just way more polished.

And still her necklace is glued to her skin. Yes it’s a pet peeve but really I’m sure the tech exist to be able to give it a bit of physics.

Ps3 version was good enough for me. This upgrade will just make me stare at Lara and stop playing.

It’s a pity that this won’t be coming to PC as an update. Her movements look even smoother too.

Haven’t gotten round to Lara yet, seems like a good time seeing as how games are a bit on the scarce side for the PS4.

I only started playing it about two weeks ago on PC. It’s as good as everyone says, if not better.

I think I’ll have to get this on the PS4, is it available in SA yet?

I recently got NBA2K14, I have to say, while it’s not perfect, sometimes you’re playing and you forget it’s a game, it literally looks like you’re watching an ESPN game. Considering it’s the start of the console cycle, I can only image the level of realism we’ll be getting come end of cycle.

I dunno, maybe its just my cynical glasses, but Im not blown away or anything.
Are there improvements, yes of course, is it amazing and a definitive display of how superior next gen is, not in my opinion.
I was expecting a bit more.

One of the big issues with technology and the escalated rate of graphic capability is that we’re approaching the plateau of graphical improvement.

As each new generation is released the leaps and bounds become a little less and less as the improvements are mostly texture- and material-based. So these aspects become more dependent on the artists’ talents and skills, and time available to polish the artwork.

So the major area that needs improvement at this point is material-rendering ie. skin still looks fake and shiny, and clothing doesn’t get wet etc.

The first thing i noticed was that the waves crashing on the rocks still looked very fake and disjointed.
This was something I saw immediately when playing it originally and the first thing I noticed now on the video.
The improvements just arent enough to warrant buying the same game again.

I agree, the technology isn’t there yet for convincing water and fabric effects.

It’s getting there, but still has a long way to go. Things haven’t really gone too far beyond Half-Life 2’s material and facial physics. In a way I think that the Source2 engine is going to be pushing that. We can see incredible lighting and metal effects in Unreal Engine 4, and it’s still not enough these days.

We’re expecting a huge leap that hasn’t come yet. That was one of the disappointments with Skyrim from Oblivion, its 5-year old predecessor; it wasn’t that much of a step forward in terms of graphic quality.

The best thing about the next gen coming is that games will finally start testing and melting pc’s again, as they no longer have to be held back by the older console’s limitations. While the new consoles still have limitations, that’s just gorgeous, and if that was on PC my graphics card would be flipping me off with that kind of detail.

    Upgrade time.
