Someone kill Timmy

I’ve never understood why anyone is willing to link their credit card to Xbox Live or PSN but even more so the PSN since that was horribly hacked a while back –  with Sony having to admit they didn’t even really know what went missing.

But apparently a lot of people do link their credit cards and for one poor soul this has now cost him nearly R1000 in unwanted purchases.

Accidental purchases are a common occurrence but this one is worth reporting on because of the odd way that it apparently occurred.

A gamer who goes by the name of Timmo posted the following on a UK forum

Ok, most of you will find this funny (I know I would), I’m fuming.

Playing Dark Souls 2 on the PS3 with my PS4 controller, I leave my PS4 on as it’s downloading updates.

Turns out the controller can control both at the same time.

So my inputs on Dark Souls buy me FIFA on PS4 (a game I already own) and British Cop skin pack (I don’t even know what this is). Get an email on my tablet telling me so.

Ring psn and straight away the guy is just saying “terms of use”, “no refunds” etc. £56.68.

Ask to speak to his superior and they won’t come on the phone. He then tells me support staff have said it’s not possible to control two devices at once. He doesn’t seem to believe me.

Half of me wants to trade this in for an Xbox with Titanfall right now.

I didn’t even know it was possible to control the PS3 and PS4 at the same time from one controller but even if it is, how unlucky is this poor guy to have purchased not one, but two pieces of online content while playing Dark Souls 2 on a different console?

What I found to be even more depressing however is that Sony won’t refund him. I mean it’s digital content just remove it from his library and give the money back. It’s not like that costs them anything. Even more amazingly however is that The Escapist is also reporting that someone else had the exact same problem while also playing Dark Souls 2.

So do you think this is some bizarre elaborate hoax or can it really happen?

Here’s our little bit of proof that it could indeed happen.

I’m guessing the wireless tech is capable of being connected to 2 devices at the same time.

I’ve seen it with wireless mice before (The lulz on that day oh my).

But Sony can’t deny this because any digital content they sell in SA has to conform to our laws and the consumer protection act clearly allows for return of goods if one is not satisfied. Secondly, if he hasn’t played the games at all (For the DLC) and already owns the other one (Fifa) then Sony has to refund him. In fact I’m pretty sure that this refund would be legally required in almost any country, not just SA.

If this is true and not a hoax then Sony need to step up and fix this.

It’s bluetooth tech… and yes, a lot of these things can connect to up to 4 or more devices at once… had much fun with early bluetooth mice… messing with 4 ppl at once #priceless

For the PS4 controller to work with the ps3, it needs to be plugged in via usb. It can then still connect with the ps4.

well then that’s definately possible. Bluetooth to PS4 and cable to PS3. Yeah, sounds like this accidental purchase is possible.

        Moral of the story?
        1) Don’t save CC details
        2) Don’t remove the option to put in a password to confirm purchases.

You can’t get a refund. Ster Kinekor “operates” the psn store on behalf of Sony in South Africa.

I bought Mortal Kombat digitally for my vita the day it was released for some reason all the files weren’t there and I couldn’t download the game beyond 40MB’s they outright refused to do a refund over the phone and deleted every single e-mail I sent them.

I lodged a complaint with the Consumer Commission and they also just ignored it.

3 days later I was able to download the game :-/

Why do you think the game revolves around the never ending pursuit of humanity? In Dark Souls 2 especially,Humanity plays a bigger role than ever. It is an analogy to society and us as human beings, consumed by the toxicity within our hearts, we search to find that which we have lost long ago , just a piece, a fragment of the humanity we once had

On a second serious note, anyone who saves credit card details on any online platform really need to reconsider whether they are well thinking individuals. You never do this. Ever. Not on an iPad, not on Google Play, not on Sony, XBoxLive, Steam, MMO’s, whatever.

It’s just not clever. Rather take an extra few minutes to retype your info so that you can ensure your stuff can never be stolen.

I know this guy’s details weren’t stolen, but the point stands. Don’t save it online!

I know in order to use the PS4 controller on the PS3 you need to connect via micro usb cable. You then need to do a few things. Even after that, you don’t have access to the same buttons (like share) that the PS4 controller has. I have huge doubts about this.

I’m tempted to say good things take time, but I know where that will lead.

” I mean it’s digital content just remove it from his library and give the money back. It’s not like that costs them anything.”

Hate this argument. It costs them potential income. Refund one person, then every tom dick and harry who regrets their purchase will claim ‘oh no it was an accident’.

Someone should put that functionality of dual system wielding to a test. For example Play Assassins Creed 4 on PS3 and PS4 on 2 separate TVs but one control and of course from the same save location or the beginning of the game. Just think it would be epic to see how both the PS3 and PS4 versions compare in a direct side to side play-through comparison. (Just a thought)

Cannot say I have much sympathy – if its legit it sucks. But put yourself in Sony’s shoes (or MS for that matter). How do you possibly tell whether this is/isn’t – and if you refund one you know it will open the floodgates.
