The State Of MWEB and Local Dedicated Console Gaming Servers

As most of you recently know, MWEB recently damn-near gave the local gaming community a massive heart-attack from shock when they announced that they would be rolling out Gears of War 3 dedicated Servers. What, here in South Africa? That means we are almost being treated… like… everyone else? Can’t be.

It was true though and it was a big leap for us as a gaming nation. Rumours were going around that MWEB would also be rolling out servers for Battlefield 3 and even Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 as well, but nothing solid has happened or been announced.

So are we getting servers? If not, why? If so, when? These are questions that we all had, so we contacted MWEB for all the details. Catch it all, after the jump.

We spoke to MWEB’s Online Gaming Manager, Desmond Kurz for a full look at the state of dedicated consoles servers and find out what was really going on.

If we take a game like Battlefield 3 for example, the multiplayer is available on the PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Now while the system for opting to host dedicated servers for PC is established and fairly simple, consoles are a different story. Kurz explain that with a game like Battlefield 3, the dedicated servers are actually administered and maintained by DICE and EA, regardless of who actually supplies them.

MWEB have put forward a formal proposal to EA to host dedicated servers for Battlefield 3 and as the situation sits, the ball is completely in EAs court. Being such a smaller market than some of the others out there, one wonders if we are worth the effort and that’s the truth of the matter. Is a small market like ours worth their time?

MWEB tell us that they have, and will keep on, applying to host servers and also make a point to note that they are incredibly good at ‘nagging’ until the companies making the decisions bend and let it happen… and that’s what we like to hear.

They are also in the process of attempting to get local Call of Duty servers and Megarom are also getting involved to try and ensure that local gamers all get the full service that they should be getting. Again, the decision will be left up to the publisher as MWEB are willing and able and merely need the go ahead to supply the monster machines required.

As things sit, its nothing short of a disgrace that we have all paid the same amount of money for the game as the rest of the world, but jump into the server browser in Battlefield 3 and Africa isn’t even a tick-able category for servers. We are supposed to have Xbox LIVE and Playstation Network support in South Africa but if that’s the truth, then why are we being sold short?

What is becoming very apparent is that we as South Africans have to start making our voices heard. We have adopted an attitude of accepting that we just don’t get the good stuff… and it’s wrong because as I mentioned earlier, we are paying the same money, of not more so surely… we should be getting the same basic services at the very least.

We need to start complaining… a lot. Imagine that Europe and Asia got dedicated servers for Modern Warfare 3… but the United States didn’t. Do you think that they would really sit back and say “Oh well, that’s just how it goes”.

Yeah, I don’t think so. It’s our turn to make some noise. Let’s make it loud.
