During the early part of this year we started actively tracking hits on individual articles, yeah before that we only had a rough idea of how popular each post was and Google Analytics is just a real pain to use for that so we made an in house system which became Batman to our regular readers.
So let’s take a look at the top 20 posts in ascending order of the calendar year 2013 and see if you can find a pattern in what games most people search for on Google.
Bur remember the earlier posts had more time to get the hits so this list isn’t actually accurate but hell it’s the holiday season and we needed filler
Geoff just scraped onto the charts with his post about the fake 4Chan instructions on how to get your Xbox One to play Xbox 360 titles. As with anything to do with 4Chan we strongly recommend not following these instructions as it will brick your Xbox One.
This article ended up with 31 983 hits and 28 comments.
In what is very quickly going to become a pattern GTA V enters the charts with my article on the $266 million, or R2.6 Billion rand budget for the development and marketing of the Rockstar chart smasher.
Not only did it smash retail charts but it racked up 33 684 hits for us and 63 comments.
Do you remember the initial GTA Online problems that plagued the game? Well you weren’t alone with 35 183 people visiting the site for this article of mine and a full 127 comments being left about it.
Thankfully those problems have now been resolved but I do still wonder how many possible players never tried again after those initial problems.
Darryn makes his first entrance into the charts with the first, of many, Pokemon stories.
It seems that people are really interested in the Mega Evolutions as this article brought in 35 376 hits but only 30 comments.. I guess Pokemon people are the shy and introverted types after all.
I’m back with GTA V again with the support article where a Rockstar employee revealed they can’t remove illegal money from someone’s account who received it unwittingly.
This one pulled in 36 266 hits and 76 comments, mainly hating on the micro transaction based online economy.
Darryn returns to form with yet another Pokemon article, this time he’s talking about Pokemon X and Y’s final starter evolutions… which means about as much to me as to why there are multiple religions on the planet that kill each other in the name of peace?
But this Pokemon article did bring in 38 568 hits and 90 comments.
And I’m back with yet another GTA V article but this time we are also saying bad things about the PlayStation 3 and if you put those two together you get a solid 67 comments and 46 712 hits.
I would also like to apologise to everyone who spent the rest of the day trying to find the non-pixelated header image above. No I don’t have it either.
The strangest thing about this industry is that you never really know what article will do well as we can see with Darryn’s GTA article which tells us what we already knew.
GTA V is choc full of easter eggs but this blatant article did net us 66 comments and 47 529 hits.
And Darryn keeps his place on the charts with yet another Pokemon evolution article.
This image friendly guide only got 11 comments but did net Darryn 49 170 hits in the race to Batman of the year
And I’m back with the very trolling article of how to play Xbox 360 games on your Xbox One.
It’s quite simple really, all you need to do is plug your Xbox 360 into the Xbox One’s HDMI in port… 36 people commented on how stupid this was while 50 566 people read the article.
And Darryn and his Pokemon fetish is back with yet another article talking about their stupid evolutions.
This time we had 85 comments about the article and a staggering 51 366 hits on it.. really why do you people care so much about Pokemon?
Easily the biggest surprise for us this year. When Blizzard asked us to give away some beta keys to their new card game I can honestly tell you I groaned. What a waste of our time setting up competition pages for something so trivial.
Well I was totally wrong, Hearthstone killed our server and brought in an incredible 450 comments and 57 036 impressions… something that was actually beaten by our dedicated competition page that isn’t counted as an article so isn’t in this list.
Oh Geoff gets the credit for this one.
Darryn’s back with some more tips on how to play Pokemon X and Y that brought in 108 comments and 60 598 hits..
You know Darryn’s going to be impossible to live with at this rate/
I brought you your very first GTA V video’s and in thanks you gave me 77 comments and 76 665 hits.
It was this post that really made me understand how much demand there was for GTA V news.
Want to make money on GTA Online? Then simply watch this video we embedded and you are good to go.
As were 77 469 people who left 96 comments.
We’re into the top 5 now and the numbers of impressions start going through the roof.
We found the entire GTA V mission list and while only 44 people commented about that we did receive a quite eye watering 172 018 impressions on this story.
As if our previous money making video wasn’t enough we found a new one and this time people came in their tens of thousands.
I’m also quite please I got 140 comments on this one but I am obviously more pleased at the 188 585 impressions.
Darryn pops back into the charts with his post on the GTA V cheat codes.
Again the comment count was low with only 35 comments but the impressions more than made up for it with 193 046 hits counted.
And Darryn refuses to let go of the charts with his 100% original Mega Evolution pokemon guide coming in at number two.
I’m very happy about this one as he worked really hard on it and was thoroughly rewarded with 229 comments and 243 156 impressions… that’s a quarter of a million.
Oh dear there really isn’t going to be anyway to shut the beast from the East (London) up now is there.
Darryn claims a clean sweep of the top 3 with yet another cash generation cheat in Grand Theft Auto V that netted him 109 comments and.. wait for it… a total of 305 857 impressions… something which is still climbing on a daily basis.
However due to his utter domination it has been agreed that he is no longer called Brenda and will once again be referred to his rightful name in public and the company chats… much a pity but yes we had to give him something for this.
And that’s the end my friends, this years popular articles was massively dominated by Grand Theft Auto and Pokemon and by myself and Darryn.
Geoff made a paltry two entries in the top 20 and Zoe.. well Zoe is still learning what people really really want. Gah Spice Girls are now stuck in my head.
Let us know what your favourite article of the year was and what you want to see more off in the news year.
