Cliff Bleszinski started a mini twitter storm last night by claiming that the new owners of the Saints Row franchise should drop the purple dildos and gimp suits from the game if they want to try find true success in the industry.
Apparently according to Cliff the industry doesn’t respect that sort of humour and that any game where an average man would be embarrassed to have his wife walk in on while playing has a fundamental problem.
And the scary thing is that I actually totally agree with him. The gameplay and insanity of Saints Row is fantastic and I absolutely love it but the juvenile obsession with the dildo just ruins it a bit for me… not totally and some of it is still hilarious but it isn’t a game I’d ever recommend to my dad or nephew.
However if they dropped the dildo, I have no problem with the gimp suit, and toned down some of the overly sexual content I am pretty sure their sales would increase.
But at what cost? Do you think Saints Row would lose its cult status if it toned it down a bit and became more mainstream?
